That's a pretty good one, but I prefer Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider. Everyone needs that buddy who will pop up in challenging times to say, "You can do it!"

I'm guessing it's loaded with incentives. Including I'd imagine a hefty sell on fee.

Eh, CHO signed a 5-year contract. He’s not coming close to living up to it, but even if he were doing pretty well, he wouldn’t be getting a raise. It’s great financial security for him, but I wouldn’t want Reyna signing a 5 year deal no matter how much they paid him. As we saw while Pulisic was there, the team can go to crap pretty quickly.

Signing a deal until 2023, Reyna positions himself to either get a nice cut of a transfer fee (which could be worth 1-2 years of CHO’s wages) and a big raise from his new team or sign an extension with a nice raise and release clause in less than two years.

I think he could ask for more money, but I wouldn’t want a long term deal with Dortmund right now if I were him.

Completely understandable given his age, the dynamics of the squad, today's financial environment, etc, etc but if he continues producing like he has that is an absolute steal on Dortmund's side

They're offering roughly the same money to Reyna now that they gave Bellingham before the season began. No offense to Bellingham, who looks like quite the talent, but Reyna leads the Bundesliga in assists and has been involved in 83 percent of the goals BvB has scored while he has been on the field. If BvB wants to wait and see how Reyna does for a few more weeks before giving him a new contract that reflects his current performance, that is fine. But his market value right now is unquestionably higher than Bellingham's was before the season began. If I were Reyna I would be looking at the wages of the guys sitting on the bench each week while he is out there setting up and scoring goals. Their wages should represent the absolute lowest offer BvB should be making him right now.

Counterpoint: Bellingham has a full year's experience at the Championship level and Reyna while exciting, has a month of Bundesliga ball under his belt.

If I was Reyna I would give up money for less years to maintain flexibility as a young player.

Reyna made his Bundesliga debut in January.

He has a lot fewer pro minutes than Bellingham, so I get and agree with your point, but it's not accurate to reduce Reyna's senior experience to a month.

This, or a longer contract with a reasonable release clause (somewhere in the $30m-$50m range?) to mitigate upside/downside risk for both Reyna and Dortmund.

Re: wage level, sample size is important. Gio may be leading the Bundesliga in assists after three games, but he looked merely competent in his appearances last year. Do his performances this year reflect development and are they sustainable? Or are they a blip? I would lean more towards the former, but Dortmund is not going to use his performance so far this season as the baseline from which they establish their contract terms.

I don't think the statement was meant to be taken quite so literally.

Over 80% of his Bundesliga minutes have been played on or after 5/23/20.

He didn't start a Bundesliga match until 6/20/20, the penultimate match day of last season.

It's not realistic to expect Gio to be named on this year's Golden Boy shortlist. It's just not how that kind of accolade works. He will be on the shortlist, and is likely to be a finalist, next season.

Not saying you're one of them, but some people in this thread are tripping.

Why would you sign this deal if you’re him? The BVB strategy is to acquire teens for cheap, give them playing time, quickly extend for a couple million and then sell them with 2+ years left on their deal for huge sums (leaving less leftover for the player for wages from their new club). Decidedly more players should let their contracts run out to at least the final year and then sign 2 year deals for 20M+ per year. At some point the players will wake up to the agents pulling commish from both sides of the coin.

I dunno. I bet a lot of players would say they'd die for their agent and it's not cause they're getting played, it's cause they're getting the best possible deal, extracting blood from a stone at higher rates than ever before. A kid 10 years ago is not getting nearly the deal Gio is getting today. I'm with you on the length though -- it's a fine line for a player of taking a longer, more lucrative guaranteed contract as opposed to a shorter, fatter one. There's little to no chance he'll see out the contract anyway so maybe on both sides it's "no harm, no foul".

I definitely agree with you about agent fees and how there’s more opportunity to make money by signing more shorter-term deals, but isn’t that pretty much what Reyna is doing here?

also, players typically receive a 10% cut of the transfer fee, and sometimes an additional signing on fee. If he gets sold for 60-70 million pounds or whatever, he could get more than a year’s worth of CHO’s salary for nothing, and get a 50% higher salary on his new contract.

Reyna could ask for 4-5 million euros on his current contract, and an easy argument can be made that he deserves it, but I wouldn’t sign for that on a long term deal.

In the BL if I remember correctly they have to give him a senior contract at 18. It is really a short term deal. They have to come back to the table early next year. With him having two years left they can't afford to let it run down.

That next offer will undoubtedly be much sweeter if he continues on his present trajectory. If he sets the world on fire for a full season there will be ginormous offers. Dortmund can sell and he will get paid by his next team. Or Dortmund will have to make him their highest paid player and likely try to get a significant extension.

I wonder if players really get a piece of the transfer fee or if that is just another of the myths that ahve become established as fact with little basis in reality?

I think it's real based on the financial incentives. Players get paid way more in salary if they move on a free transfer. If they got less money overall when moving for a fee, no player would ever move for a fee.

It's the opposite of "they signed Pulisic/Park Ji-Sung/Chicharito to sell jerseys!" Clubs don't make shit from shirt sales.

With the intense international fixtures the past week and the game on Tuesday (and 7 games between now and the next INTL break after 11/7) it's a bit of a strange lineup. No Haaland (he's a cyborg, but his schedule has been ridiculous), Bellingham, Reus, Guerreiro.

Hoffenheim, whom have been world-beaters on their day, are without Kramaric due to Covid-related reasons.

Unlikely with his fitness record he'd start today and against Lazio on Tuesday.

Yea that was my first thought. Brandt and Sancho are not playing forward.

It’s only for one week at least.

Yeah, blows that Adams, Sargent, and Reyna are playing at the same time with Pulisic overlapping. Will have 3-4 devices going at once, but we've waited 2 weeks for games and they all come at once.

Tuesday will again be rough with Barcelona, Chelsea, BVB and RBL all playing at the same time.

First would problems, I know, but it is somewhat bad luck.
