Thanks Ben for your commitment to the team. You've carried DC in your heart and soul and we appreciate you as a very important part of this team's legacy. We wish you well in your new role with the club. Please discuss all news related to Chad Ashton as the new head coach.../jk James
Before we go any further here, let me say, "This isn't about me." https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020...ng-about-dc-united-job-security-isnt-about-me
I don't care if he doesn't even have a Learner's Permit, the guy has a soccer IQ to impart which is more than Ashton.
If it is true that Ashton ran the practices while Ben played on the field, then there is no reason at all for Ashton to be elevated to (interim) Head Coach.
DCU - hold my beer! Chad Ashton will serve as #DCU’s interim coach, multiple sources tell me. A little surprised that title didn’t go to Nolan Sheldon - well-regarded assistant and former academy director.— Pablo Iglesias Maurer (@MLSist) October 8, 2020
LOL, Challenge Accepted! Wouldn't it be great if Ashton hoisted us into the playoffs and... You know, I'm not even going to say it.
I would be more mad about his role within the club, Ashton as interim manager etc but...I've had years to come to grips with the likelihood of these two moves and my white hot rage has gradually cooled down I want to thank Olsen for FINALLY playing all the kids once he realized the season was over. Honestly that is his last great contribution to the club, helping them gain more visibility and experience... My confidence in ownerships' ability to select worthy replacements for Olsen-Kasper-Ashton is pretty low, but if they wanna take advantage of our crop of young speedy attackers by hiring David Wagner on a 1-yr contract i'd probably be ok with the choice Cant really think of anybody else off head that would take this crappy job right now
Ben Olsen is ready to post here after the new coaches first loss. Y’all already know Benny is gonna throw so much shade in the office.
I'm very, very, very glad that Ben is staying on at DCU in some capacity. The only way things could have gone more badly is if the FO would have kicked Ben to the curb and treated him like a punk or something. Whatever else, Ben Olsen would not deserve that, and any such treatment would have been an outrage. Ben has literally, literally, spent half his life in service to this club. Right now, I couldn't care less about his record. He has more than earned any/all possible respect. He took the manager's job--with no coaching experience-- because DCU was desperate and did so knowing all the stress and BS that he would be in for. Thanks Ben. Nothing more to say.
Fire Ashton! No way would I tolerate Ashton getting the permanent job - they should make it clear that in no way will he be considered for the 2021-2022 season.
And besides . . . Ben won more silverware as DCU manager than Pochettino did at Spurs . . . Just sayin' . . . [Adler ducks]
How can you say this though? Do you want a club that’s like a family business or do you want to win? A head coach remaining with the club in any capacity after being removed (or rather so SOON after removal) would be totally unprecedented in any sport i’ve ever seen. I ask myself what i would trust Ben to do for DCU going forward...and the simple answer is: nothing soccer related. If he wanted to spearhead charitable work I guess that might make sense. But GM? team pres? academy coach? scout? I’d say no to it all except minority owner if he had the funds (which i somehow doubt). If people really think he was poor enough at the job to warrant removal...how can you also wish for him to remain in a position where he’d influence decisions regarding the team? I don’t get it Personally I’m fine with them paying out his contract so he can stay in DC and have some stability during the pandemic. We definitely owe him that as a club legend. But absolutely nothing more with relation to a job in our front office.
Ashton being elevated to head coach means a good chance he will be fired too. Any head coach hire will want to hire their own assistants.
Ashton is the right voice at the right time, according to the people who fired Ben Olsen. I disagree. I’d rather see the Loudoun guy interim than Ashton. Thx, Jay!
Yeah honestly if Ashton or Kasper remain next year as part of technical staff then firing Ben was pointless If keeping Chad is a requirement for any new hire than they’ll limit quality candidates in an even more idiotic way than USSF rule about residing Chicago. Which reminds me...what are the odds that Cherundolo could be lured to join DCU as coach?
