Owning that the US suffered a total catastrophe in '17, there is a reason it was seen as an abomination, and it's ebecause it was inexcusable to finish fifth in a confederation as weak as ours. As you already know, it's hard as heck to make it through Conmebol because you've generally got 2.5 to 3.5 spots available total, with Brazil and Argentina essentially being locks for the other two. 2.5-3.5 slots for generally speaking 5 solid to very good international squads is tough as hell. Someone who could beat up on Concacaf, the AFC, most of CAF and some of UEFA is left out nearly every cycle, w/you guys being the odd one's out last cycle.

Now add the other angle: Forward competition?

Well, I hear your position is the weakest it's been in more than a decade so that's a problem, but our Forward position is the weakest its been since 1990 so we even trump you there. Yes we have lots of kids that could be options, but that's all we have. Lots of kids, Sargent, Ebobisse, Weah, Soto, Nova, etc, it's basically a giant pile of question marks, some injury riddled vets like Jozy and bacon, Wood's gone totally MIA, it's a disaster. Hell we've got a guy as likely to score accidentally with his own arse or the back of his head, as he does with his errant cement touch in the oft-starting Zardes. The position is a total disaster for us and the only saving grace is that there are a lot of Forwards, and Winger/Forwards bubbling up w/potential after next to nothing was developed between Jozy in '07 and Sargent in '17, the problem is, they are all questions, none are certain.

'94-'14 we always had at least one veteran forward or MF/Forward who could play the role, and had scored dozens of goals in that role for us over the years whether it was Wynalda, or McBride, or Donovan, or Dempsey or Altidore (who then would inevitably get injured post WC '10) or some combo of them. Since Dempsey retired, and Altidore basically began to age/injure out, there is literally nothing to turn to that's proven. We will throw out Zardes' and his lead feet, we'll throw out Sargent's potential, Jozy's seeming corpse, etc but right now there's not actually anything to depend upon.

So why does Soto choose you in that scenario? the job competition? It's not like anyone's locked in as a vet starter/stud, or as a wunderkind ahead of him in the US. In terms of qualification, we don't have a single internationl squad that's even half as good as Brazil or Argentina, and our second tier squads most cycles are Honduras, Panama, Trinidad, Jamaica and the like, not exactly Colombia, Uruguay, or the more competent iterations of Paraguay, Ecuador and Peru.

So yeah, I'm still confused why Chile would make more sense, especially considering that his buddies on the '19 U20 WC team where he was the top scorer are getting called in, or closed to getting called in (Dest, Llanez, Richards, Ledezma, Gloster etc) and if he gets the job done and plays his way back into form, a call up is a near certainty at some point in the next year if for no other reason than the competition at Forward is unproven at best, and bad at worst.

For those who don't watch the videos, the 2nd one shows a much more complete highlight of the nice dribbling in the first video. Also, he preserved the tie at the death by a toenail. Good work.
