Yueill has matured since his days with us. I remember him making great plays and bonehead plays with us. Sometimes one right after the other. He didn't seem too confident IIRC. He looks much better now. Tommy improved his performances with us after his one prima donna game. He even participated extensively in autograph signing with the fans after games. Glad he is seeing more time on the field. I would be happy to have back here is he is not going to get time in SJ.
[Edit by mod] In my opinion Thompson is an average to below average MLS player, he probably wouldn't be a starter for 95% of of this league. He's probably not as bad as people say, but he's no where near as good as JJ says he is. He's not a good 2 way player, he's defense is below average and his offense is average. I don't think he's a special player. To each there own.
I think I’m in the wrong thread, as I see a lot of talk about Thompson. I’d say average MLS player. Nothing against him, but he wouldn’t get this kind of attention from fans at other clubs. There’s so little else to get excited about with this team, the polished glass is mistaken for a diamond.
You got me! There you go again. "Special" is a strawman. No one's saying "special". We can disagree on "good 2-way player". I've got numbers to show that he makes a lot of plays on defense, and to show that he's contributed a lot to the offense this year. It's not just baseless opinion.
OK, so looks like no one agrees with Quakes05, who says he's not an MLS player. Anyway, funny you should say that about not getting attention from fans at other clubs. I just read a post from somewhere - an LAFC fan feeling sorry for us, and wondering why the Quakes don't feature TT on offense. Even I don't think that's the answer, though I think, again, he's a solid contributor as a 2-way player. He's our first homegrown, kinda local, has some flair, and does all kinds of stuff off the field. That's why he may get a little more attention.
So he can string together a bunch of 5-10 yard passes, what does he add to the offese? What about his dive that caused the penalty? Clearly if that was anyone against use we'd be screaming bloody murder but he gets a free pass for that? You come off as making it seem like he's some type of 'special' player. You his agent?
Again, *you're* saying "special". I'm only saying "good 2-way player". Don't build strawmen and assign them to me so that you can knock them down. I didn't like that play - I think he went down way too easy. But as I've said, on offense he makes a lot of deep attacking runs and can at times beat guys with his footwork (e.g. Llegett in the recent LA game). That PK may have been a dive, but he's got I think 2 or 3 other earned PK's + 2 assists this year. So he's contributed to nearly 1/3 or our goals this year. We've already been through this. His godfather.
The MLS Is Back Tournament withstanding, he hasn't offered anything since regular league play is back. What negatives does he bring, like the turnovers, losing his mark, and being scorched on the outside often on defense. That doesn't exactly constitute a 'good 2-way-player'. Technically, I've always said he's gifted, but because he can juggle the ball and tek with it, doesn't mean he's a foot work maestro. Please explain how the majority of his passes go into Espinoza on the side and he has 1 pass into the box last game. Those passes didn't exactly turn into great goal scoring chances. I can post every other game since league play too and we can discuss them if need be. Does he have technical skills to beat players sometimes? Yes he does, has he been BURNED a lot defensively yes he has. (removed by TS) Realistically, who would he start over at AM, and RB in this league? If he was waived, do you think someone would pick him up? I don't, but maybe he will. I think he's going to be a guy who will forever be your average MLS player who wasn't an impact player, nor was he a game changer. But the majority will never remember him for the good 2-way-play you speak of.
I've pointed out flaws - dive on that PK, suspect to getting burned by speed on defense, poor shooter, average speed at best. But on balance I stand by what I said - he's a good 2-way player, and that's why Matias plays him almost every game. He's a good ball hawk on D - pressures, tackles, gets lots of recoveries, and I've already gone over the offensive contributions several times - one of the team's best dribblers, makes lots of attacking runs, etc.
Who else would be played instead of TT? We barely have 20 players to fill on a bench, and about 14 of them shouldn't be in MLS, and the others should be on the bench somewhere in MLS. When you have shit, you play the least amount of shit you have, but it doesn't mean it isn't shit.
Yes collectively the team is awful and sucks. Quit being arrogant. No excuse in this world can be made. 10 years of suck, 1 semi decent season, and 1 never again season.
TT came on as a sub. Probably not fair to try to prove your point by showing what he did in only 26 minutes of play. As JazzyJ would tell you, that's too small of a sample size.
This article by Daniel Sperry is pretty good and cites some useful numbers (most of them have probably been mentioned in this forum already, but good recap). Half (18/36) of all acquisitions he’s made have come from NCAA, Academy, or USL/NASL. Of the other half There has been ONE acquisition of a player that previously played in MLS. Of the 29 players Fioranelli has let go, 14 of them are still playing soccer in a top-flight league. https://lastwordonsports.com/soccer/2020/09/23/jesse-fioranelli-blame-earthquakes-woes/
LOL I literally just posted something similar to what he says fire Fioranelli instead of Almeyda in the Ian Russell thread lol
maybe you should try to get into the group that Robert Jonas just joined. (I don't follow them, i only follow Jonas)
