Not sure that's good. Griezmann and Coutinho remain square pegs with only round holes available. And we have no money to do anything about the rest of the squad. Only thing that will be different this season is Messi is even more unhappy.

    Is Dembele injured yet?

To me it sounds like he wanted to leave for free. If contact with Man City was true, then the plan was to pay him high salary while getting him on a free transfer. I've said it before, that is complete BULLSHIT if true. If he is not happy and wants to leave, make Man City to pony up some money. I don't care if his contract said that he was able to leave for free. If it did it's because Farto was strong armed into doing that so he would stay.

If we take the hypothetical tactical problem Messi would pose for City, and turn it on actual Barça problems, there's an interesting conundrum: is the offensive production of Messi worth the defensive liabilities he leaves by not pressing? How you set up the team in a way that lets Messi do what he does best while not letting opponents take advantage of the fact that we basically defend with 10 players (9 if you count Suarez in the same way).

For me, the solution is simple: we haven't had an Eto'o or Pedro or even Alexis type forward who has the workrate to do pressing and is happy to make off-ball runs in attack to free up space for others. We need that kind of high footballing IQ, tireless forward again, maybe two of them.

We also no longer have a Dani Alves, who just dominated the right side behind Messi for years. We won't ever replace him, but we need a combination of midfielder and RB who do that work to challenge and win the ball, while also providing options in attack.

Jeez imagine how little running / pressing Messi will do when he’s disinterested !!

He's the only striker we have. We haven't even been linked to another striker afaik, despite the huge threat of Suarez leaving.

I believe the clause in Messi's contract allowing him a window in which he could leave on a free was agreed upon in a moment of more good faith between the front office and Messi (and his agent dad). I imagine the assumption was, Messi could return to Newell's Old Boys or a Chinese or Japanese or MLS club, with a proper legend's send-off.

The clause, whatever it explicitly stipulates, probably didn't assume Messi would ever join a European rival on a free. The stupidity of Bartomeu is in leaving that possibility open.

Anyway, a big relief to hear Messi say he's staying, if only for the end of the uncertainty. At least Koeman has a better idea of how to shape his squad now.

Is it really the end of the uncertainty though? I mean, as it stands we have an unhappy player with 1 year left on his contract. Sounds like a selling situation to me.

If he is still at Barca on 5 October we might get a 2 week break from this story until rumors start surfacing about who he will sign with in January. Will he leave Barca in Jan to help another club in CL? Looking forward to 10 weeks of that discussion.

Just extends the uncertainty for another 10 months.

In a perfect world ( mine ) we’d offload Suarez plus the other deadwood ( including Umtiti and Roberto ) then dip into next year’s budget - as we have done in the past - then somehow get Neymar back plus Leicester’s CB Çaglar
Söyüncü then we’d be good to go !!

Memphis Depay is the only forward I've heard us linked to lately. Wouldn't be suprised if both Messi and Griezmann play centrally.

Can’t believe there are people who are unhappy about Messi staying or/and dissatisfied with his words today.

First of all this board deserved every critic coming from Messi and if anything I would say it was long overdue.

secondly, there is none in our squad who could replace Messi and make us a better side next season. Or anyone available that will make us better than without Messi. The plan should have been to offload other deadwoods who can barely run rather than selling/pissing off our main player.

Lastly and most importantly, Messi is OUR legend. We should never accept our biggest legend to leave us in this manner. He deserves a standing ovation from the sold out Camp Nou in his last game. Many people might not like it in this forum, but I will happily endure a shit season to see this happen.

or it could be that Barto was unwilling to negotiate at all? It looks like there was no negotiation between the clubs at all.

Man City looked into the transfer, with financial fair play they couldn't afford much of a fee. Pep told Messi it might be best to stay.

    Financial Fair Play?
I thought that was eliminated when City avoided punishment a few weeks ago.

Yes they won their appeal. FFP is not eliminated though, they basically got a pass because of Coronavirus this past season. That doesn't mean they can now go and break the rules, they have to stay within the rules and know they can't if they sign Messi.

The accusation against Farto is that he paid 6 times over market price for that social media service.

1 - He is a right winger or AM. You seem to not understand that's sort of Messi's position.
2 - Did you just look at the stats or watch the goals ? Because seriously, those weren't assists you should be wowing about. One corner, one complete accidental, one from a cross field cross where Aubameyang did most of the work.
