in my limited experience there seem to be no more people likely to get a purely hopeful shot than high ceiling attackers. you don’t throw in a center back and see what sticks.

Man, wouldn't this be the ultimate comeback story if Nick Taitague emerges out of the woodwork and becomes a first-team squad player at Schalke this season? Thanks, @chrome_vapors! This is a great assessment. Appreciate it.
It's not like this would be totally out of the blue. If I remember right, there was a camp for either the '99 U20s a few months before that world cup or a U23 camp recently where reports were that Nick was easily the best player there. He's always had talent and never really lost it, he just hasn't actually been on the field.
He’s a really talented player. If he stays healthy, he’s better than rabbi matondo who is not good at soccer.
feels like a chance to see a comet or a space shuttle launch or a unicorn with nick on the bench for schalke today
to me, his inclusion is further proof that schalke simply has no $$ for bringing in players. they've got to cobble together whatever they can cut, paste, and tie together with string - which is exactly what they're doing to hold together nick's body. his injury history was strangely missing from their server when they were making that decision. some would say it's a sure indication that they're going down! (or maybe schalke is going to persuade europe about the load-bearing dark arts being practiced by the clippers for kawhi, and the pelicans for zion)
while this could all still go haywire, and nobody would be surprised, this has the chance to be the most random ascendancy in Yanks Abroad history. Just a random guy, who once had promise, but all but given up on, and then ends up on the first team roster out of absolutely nowhere. It doesn't even matter if Schalke is a potential relegation battler, it's still remarkable. If he can get some minutes, and look pretty good doing it, he ain't far from a NT callup, obviously.
Random guy in that he has completely fallen off the radar of everyone. Can have all the talent in the world but if ur injured for 3 years, you're just another guy at that point.
It feels like they got back to camp so early this year relative to when the season starts. It's weird to see the season doesn't start until *checks notes* September 19.
Plenty of time for him to get a minor injury and still come back before the end of the season. I am sorry I said that. Really pulling for him, legit talent and seemed like a nice kid.
