These are great reference points, thanks to both of you. When all you hear about is 35M for this player, 70M for that player, you really lose perspective for clubs like Luton who don't swim in those waters. It's amazing the divide between clubs that are separated by just the one division, although you can see why they call that playoff final the most expensive game in history each year.
It's not just that because the vast majority of the Championship spends way more that 2.5m for a player. There are always minnows but even by that standard Luton's just a tiny tadpole.
I'd suspected as much, but when you see it in print, Jesus. Per Transfermarkt, Sluga is the only player they've paid a transfer fee for in the last 3 seasons. Every other arrival was a loan or a free transfer. There are - or, rather were - about a half-dozen League 1 sides that (could) spend 1.5 million on transfers in a season. Luton are a Championship side on a League 2 budget. I think CCV needs to look for other options
Honestly, my eyes bugged out when I read that their transfer record before last summer was set in 1989. In the modern game, for a club playing in the Championship, that's astonishing.
F*&ck Luton Town for CCV I don't normally type this here, but at this stage of his career MLS would be a much better move, and Spurs are asking a price that several clubs would meet. He should at the very least be looking at mid-table Championship teams with ambitions to push for promotion.
Couldn’t agree more. Furthermore, I don’t think Luton has the cash or is willing to spend the 2.5M on him. They may want to spend that cash but can they? Luton was a great option for CCV at the time and they both benefitted from each other. It was a fun little “fling” that ultimately allowed Luton to survive. But let’s not kid ourselves, Luton will right back near the bottom of the Championship struggling to survive. CCV can do better than that. If Luton is the only option, which I doubt, he would be better off coming to MLS.
Kid probably wants to stay in England given his roots. I can't imagine that he is really pondering MLS as his next move. Now MLS clubs would do well, IMHO, to consider him given the transfer fee (seems almost like the reverse move given the money that MLS seems to get in transfer fees for quality players going the other way).
True. But, to be fair to them, they were in League One last season and League Two the season before, and half of the 2019-20 squad were with them in that last League Two campaign. It's not as if they're used to spending at this level. Thing is, these guys will get old/get injured/get found out/burn out and there'll come a point that Luton will have to spend but can't and they get relegated, after which the solvency problems start. CCV should keep looking.IMO

Interesting...he doesn't actually have a shot at sticking at Spurs, right? I'm assuming they're giving him minutes to keep him somewhat fit in order to facilitate another loan or transfer.
The latter, and they also have a lot of players presumably still on break. Besides CCV, the only players on the bench who I recognize are the backup goalkeepers. In defense alone, they were missing Rose, Sanchez, Aurier, and Tanganga.
Spurs using the players that are available, but it gives him an opportunity to show Mourinho what he's about. A lot of games this shortened season, no doubt CCV could do well in the Europa League for Spurs.
I don't think it's beyond the possible that he stays as a backup CB. I'm not sure that'd be good for his career though. He'd be like the 5th CB behind Toby, Sanchez, Dier, Japhet, and possibly even Foyth.
Certainly. But that doesn't mean it couldn't happen again. With Vertonghen gone and the team looking at buying midfielders and attackers (Pizzi for now, and three more possibles). Also, the rumor on The Fighting Cock is that CCV may be kept for cup games --he needs to be registered though, so we'll know soon enough. https://thefightingcock.co.uk/forum/threads/summer-2020-transfer-thread.34921/page-848#post-2422924 https://thefightingcock.co.uk/forum/threads/summer-2020-transfer-thread.34921/page-863#post-2423996 https://thefightingcock.co.uk/forum...the-homegrown-rules.31985/page-2#post-2427714 Etc.
His contract expires next summer. I have to imagine they want to sell him and put some money in the kitty. Letting him walk for free so he can be the 4th or 5th CB next season makes very little sense.
Sure, he can, but if you were him would you? He's way down the depth chart. He's been on loan to 4 different championship teams in two years. Wouldn't you want to settle in somewhere and start your career rather than be a bench piece for Tottenham or go on yet another loan?
Spurs are not a terribly rich club and Mourinho's teams play a pretty different game to Pochettino's, which means buying new and different players, esp in midfield and up top. Defence, which is Jose's strong suit anyway, is something that can wait for a while. On top of which, even a worthwhile Bosman signing means agent's fees and a signing-on bonus - could mount up to 750k with a good portion up front - and probably require a two-year deal while selling CCV wouldn't bring in much more than 2 million, probably in installments. Spurs have 5 CBs - Sanchez( aged 24), Alderweireld (31), Foyth (22), Tanganga (21) and CCV (22) - in that order. Foyth missed most of last season with injuries and Tanganga made his debut last season. If they have doubts about Foyth being fully fit before, say, November it makes a lot of sense to run Tanganga and CCV under the microscope during pre-season to see if they could be useful in Prem games. If Jose decides CCV could be, better to keep him on and drill him intensively for another (half) season until Spurs have enough money for a CB worth paying for. Losing 1-1.3 million (net) from selling CCV isn't optimal but if you're going with stop-gaps, a 12-month stop-gap that might still get 400k for in January is better than a new two-year one.
In Spurs defender transfer news, they've agreed a 12 million deal for Wolves RB/RWB Matt Doherty. Unlikely to affect CCV, as he's a direct replacement for Serge Aurier, who has offers from the Continent.

He's proven to be someone that generates demand on the loan market so there's no real risk for Spurs to extend him a couple years at wages befitting a Championship starter. I would not agree to a a single year if I were him. I'd want multiple years added or I'd want out.
