Starting tonight vs Lecce: 📄 | #LecceSampNon deludeteci, non stasera. Forza Doria! pic.twitter.com/JS9Kcdkmnn— U.C. Sampdoria (@sampdoria) July 1, 2020
They won 1-2 away against Lecce. Another solid performance from Yoshida. Now they moved 4 points clear of 18th place Lecce, and 10 and 11 points clear of 19th and 20th placed teams, SPAL and Brescia, respectively. It was refreshing to hear the commentator say: "block by Yoshida", and "dispossessed by Yoshida". 20 years ago it was far-fetched to hear something like this about a Japanese player in Italian Serei A. If it is not for the non-EU players quota in Italy, I can imagine an exodus of Japanese players to Italy after the tremendous success of Tomiyasu, and how Yoshida is amazingly fitting in at Italy. Just like how the successes of Hasebe and Kagawa at the beginning of the 2010s decade opened the floodgates for an exodus of Japanese players to Germany.
Actually had an assist today. He launched Gabbiadini directly from the midfield! The forward trapped the ball nicely in the penalty box and scored. Sampdoria is now closer and closer to safety. If Ranieri gets an extension it'd be good news for Yoshida.
Sampdoria have been in good form of late, winning 5 games in their last 6 games. with Yoshida in the starting line-up 9 games / 6 wins 0 ties 3 losses without Yoshida in the starting line-up 25 games / 6 wins 5 ties 14 losses
We've been in good shape. I have to admit I'm pretty surprised, the wins against Cagliari and Udinese were really good. And the game in Parma - despite the Gialloblu season is already over - was impressive. Tonight there's the derby: if we win, we'll be 100% safe and Genoa might still go down. Basically the last meaningful game of the season.
The stat is nice but let's give credit to the managerial change, more than Yoshida... (who is still a piece of the puzzle, of course)
Well, Ranieri had his role, but I think also COVID-related stop helped us, against all odds. With less fitness for everyone, we have been able to count on a simpler style of game to make it against our direct rivals. Now the season is over. We have Juventus, Milan and already relegated Brescia in the last three games.
Sampdoria are officially safe from relegation with 3 matches to play, as a result of Lecce's defeat against Bologna. In another news, by playing 10 matches for Sampdoria, Yoshida triggered an option that will allow Sampdoria to sign him permanently. Sampdoria are reported to offer him a 2-years contract.
Despite the defeat Yoshida was very very good tonight against the like of Ronaldo and Higuain. He saved a goal on the line and always win physical challenge. He nearly scored too by head on a ck. Imo japanese defenders need to move to Serie A to greatly improved their level. The most defensive league in the world is the right choice to learn how to defend properly, not EPL, not Bundesliga. Come to Italy guys really. JNT with Yoshida (experience) and Tomiyasu (youth) as CBs means a solid defence we miss since WC2010.

He said he spent time working on his Italian during the pandemic. I guess Maya enjoys learning languages - he was already speaking English to Pixi as a youngster at Nagoya.
There seems to be a correlation between willingness/ability of Japanese players to learn the local languages and success in Europe. Others with good language skills — Nagatomo, Take Kubo, and Tomiyasu.
There are always cases like Kakitani, Usami, Yamaguchi and Nakajima who are examples of otherwise though. Althought Nakajima still managed to have a decent season in Portimonese despite his current state.
Actually Usami's German is fairly decent - you can tell he put some concerted effort into learning the grammar and pronunciation. It's easy to typecast him as an entitled prodigy but I think he did all that he could to succeed in Germany and it didn't quite come to pass as he lacked athleticism. In the case of Yamaguchi I think he just had a bad experience at a terrible team with a coach who hardly knew him, and didn't feel it was worth sticking it out in 2.Buli.
Three options for him. 1) one-year extension (1.5M euros) 2) two-year extension (2M euros) 3) Besiktas
Usami should never have went to Bayern at such a young age back then imo. Anyway, good to see now Japanese players are moving out to Belgium/Netherlands/Portugal or top 5 leagues' 2nd Division league sides first when they move to Europe at a young age before moving onto the top 5 leagues e.g Tomiyasu
I think that's still the best way to go, especially if you haven't played in J1 or in the national team.
It'll be a tough year for Sampdoria. The squad doesn't look stronger and I don't trust Ranieri to save us again.
