No corporation has freedom of speech.. Hence why their speech can be regulated by the FCC and FTC. They also aren’t necessarily regulating the corporation’s speech, they are regulating it’s ability to do participate in the US’s economy.
What can TV do that the telegraph can’t.. a lot. The “For you” section is also a significant step up from Twitter... not to mention the ability to duet, respond to comments, a large supply of audio clips that can be easily used to create your clips from.
But back in the 70's and 80's it was the state that provided the funding for most of universities, that is what has fallen off, states can no longer pay for universities higher costs. While federal funding has not kept up with inflation (of private college education specially), many states have cut their funding, federal loans have to make up more and more of the price of going to school. https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/resear...federal-and-state-funding-of-higher-education https://www.pbs.org/newshour/educat...-state-funding-for-higher-ed-fell-by-billions https://www.cnbc.com/2019/10/24/why-college-tuition-keeps-rising.html
Exactly. If states wanted to, they would fund public colleges and universities to the same levels that they did 30 and 40 years ago. But they don't because too many people have gotten brainworms that make them say unironically that it wouldn't be a good thing if too many people had a higher education.
Sure they can. A cynic* would note that states' support for higher ed diminished at the same that more POCs were attending said colleges. I'll leave that for a cynic to say. *In studying Jesus' time I found that there is such a thing as "cynic" philosophy and it's not cynical. The Jesus of the Gospel preached a world view that contained many elements from cynic philosophy.
A few things: 1. Diogenes was a lunatic. 2. Nietzsche uses Diogenes to announce the death of god. 3. So like there’s some sweet irony here.
Motto for the United Negro College Fund: A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste Motto for States Cutting Funding For Public Colleges: A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Use
I recently saw this segment on Amanpour where this Yale Law professor Markovits talks about our education system. According to him, the public actually *are* funding private higher education at a rate roughly 10 times higher than they invest in public higher education students in the form of tax exemptions that the private universities use for example to keep class sizes lower. Very interesting:
They have to set priorities. My state spends a lot on higher education, but we are not good at managing finances, still seems like good priorities by Illinois in terms of education spending (or maybe we just have a low student number). how does yours rank. https://howmuch.net/articles/states-investing-the-most-in-higher-education How does that compare as a return on investment (or total cost) https://howmuch.net/articles/best-value-colleges-by-state Unfortunately the chart above is for 1 university per state (best ROI), not the average cost of higher education by state.
This truly is the content marketing election One of the benefits of making videos that garner 5 million+ views is that you hear from a lot of people, including whistleblowers inside Trump administration.I've received three communications saying that during his term Trump has suffered a "series" of "mini-strokes."WATCH. pic.twitter.com/MHWQR1c2Yk— Don Winslow (@donwinslow) August 1, 2020
The Biden campaign should start putting some $$$ in Georgia. The polls have been remarkably stable there. He has a slight lead within the margin of error and that could be consolidated with some strong ads campaign. New CBS News/YouGov polls: North Carolina: Biden 48%, Trump 44% Georgia: Biden 46%, Trump 45%
I'm gonna go ahead and say it, even though I know most will strenuously disagree: It's worth it to pick Stacy Abrams. She will be a super-quick learner and it's not like the rest of the campaign will be neophytes. As per Nate Silver she'd be worth about 1.5 points in Georgia. Gimme those senate seats...
Repped! Mate, you stole my thoughts. Been thinking about this all week end. She is a dark horse now but she would energize the black vote, specially in the South, like no others. She does not have Rice's experience of Kamala's national presence, but she is miles better on the trail than all of the other VP candidates. That would be poetic justice as well if she was on the ticket & help flip her home state and win a senate seat.
Those interested in podcasts....some good ones this week: - David Plouffe with Stephanie Cutter who will run the (virtual) Biden convention. Lots of good info. - The New Abnormal with Sen Duckworth then San Yang of the Princeton Election project. Duckworth is really a fun guest. - Josh Marshall (TPM)has a brilliant video interview with Tom Nichols. Really top conversation covering elections, Lincoln project and international politics.
So with the attack on the USPS are we still pretending this will be a free election? Dems need to pivot to vote early 1290004757780652033 is not a valid tweet id
Yeah, like @charlie15, I've been thinking about this, too. Abrams appears to be very politically savvy, is also a great public speaker (don't forget she gave the 2019 SOTU rebuttal), has won elected office and had another fraudulently stolen from her, and has said she wants to be an executive (Gov or VP). I also agree that she seems to be a quick learner, and that she would be able to step into the President's shoes as needed.
Kaspersky anti virus. Not exactly the same thing as Tik Tok, but it's a precedent that used the same argument of national security. Either way, I wouldn't worry about it. Instagram is coming out with Reels which will basically be a carbon copy of Tik Tok. In a month our 14 years old girls will be back to dancing online. Also, the US isn't the only country banning Tik Tok. India already banned and Australia and UK are next. And from there the dominoes will fall through the rest of the Western world. 2020 is definitely seeing a rise in global anti China sentiment. Eventually what we really need is a transparent digital bill of rights in America so everyone knows what the rules are. Stuff like net neutrality, data as a property right, and treating these platforms like public utilities which would extend freedom of speech protections and privacy protections. Once you set the standards, China will probably fail to meet them by default if their products are sending our data to CCP.
To be perfectly honest, I am more worry about FB than any other platform at this point. Beyond the privacy issues with FB that are massive, they are simply toxic and poisonous to democracy and society.
I agree. So I support banning Tik Tok because I don't feel comfortable with CCP mining my data and building an AI profile of who I am. But the thing is I don't feel comfortable with Facebook and Google doing that either. I don't feel comfortable with the US government having a backdoor access to this data. And I definitely don't feel comfortable with my data being sold to 3rd parties without my permission. Data as a property right is a simple concept. If I create an FB account I should be able to have a data dial. If I turn it to 0, it means they have to destroy my data every few weeks or so. If I turn it to medium, maybe I let them collect my data but only for their use. If I turn my data setting to 'open' I allow them to sell my data to a 3rd party but they have to notify me who they sold it to, and I should get a small percentage of the sale ... a data dividend. That's basically what social media is now. They're a publisher, and we're all content creators.
