Wow, that's a boring name. I do like the crest, though. Simple and clean. I wonder if, perhaps, they decided on the plain old "Charlotte FC" because there were no clear feelings about a "nickname". That way, when the fans find a natural nickname for the club they can update the official name if they want.
The new Nordecke and indeed the entire renderings for the new Crew stadium look good. I hope they don't forget to include a place in the stadium to honor their history. Right off the top of my head some names that I immediately associate with the Black and Gold are Brian McBride, GBS, Frankie Hejduk, and Chad Marshall. My fave uniform for them was always the infamous "bumblebee" uniform!
The Crew does indeed have a Circle of Honor, whose names are displayed on the front of the upper deck at Mapfre. There's little doubt that it will be transferred to the new place. Current members are indeed McBride and Hejduk, along with Sigi Schmid who attended the ceremony in June 2019, being aware - no one else was - that he was dying. He needed a heart transplant but had already been told he didn't qualify. He passed away a few months later. It's one of the truly great moments in club history. We thought we were saying thank you, but he knew we were saying goodbye. Marshall may belong but he hasn't been retired long enough (there are some rules) and GBS absolutely does but when he took the LA job that may have been put on hold. We'll see.
Do you know what the rules are out of curiosity? The Rapids have no "waiting period", Casey and Pablo went in the season after they retired. I expect Moor to do the same.
An individual must have been retired as a player for at least one (1) year Played at least four (4) seasons for the Crew Exception: Requirement to previous entry may be reduced to two years for a player who is named MLS Best XI, wins an MLS Individual Award or captains the Crew to the MLS Cup title in that time Appeared in at least 50 or more League matches for the club Win Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield or CONCACAF Champions League title
Under those rules the Rapids Gallery of Honor would be just Casey and Pablo (and again, Moor to be added upon retirement). No Bravo, Spencer, Henderson, or Balboa. Hard to think of a scenario where Balboa wouldn't belong in a Rapids honor like this.
Well, both clubs are the same age but only 2 players have made it so far. It's pretty tough. GBS is a lock of course, but guys like Friedel, Stern John, Mike Lapper, Jeff Cunningham, second in MLS scoring all time, etc. never won a trophy so they'll never get there. Higuain won't either.
On the heels of Charlotte FC we find out today the Washington DC NFL team will go by Washington Football Team (Washington FT?) for a while and the Seattle NHL team will be the Seattle Kraken.
Unfortunately no. If it were up to me, sure. But he never won a trophy of any kind, which knocks him out.
I started watching MLS in '98 after truly becoming footy aware during France '98, that was a rough adjustment I can assure you. No one told me about WC withdrawals! Anyway, over those first few years I would have sworn Ross Paule would be in the Rapids Gallery Of Honor but he fizzled out after such a promising rise. Was it injuries or did he just peek and then flame out?
Really, really disappointed they didn't go with Washington Team Football. In fact I think the NFL should mandate that be the interim name!
As I recall, the Raps traded him away when they signed Mr. Valderrama and had no natural spot for him. He was the MVP of the Crew in 2003 or so. Very popular, had a couple very good years there, where the fans called him Ross the Boss. Still do. He got too many whacks on the head and had to retire shortly after that due to concussion issues.
@Bill Archer pretty much covered it. Once we brought in El Pibe he was surplus and moved. He's certainly a star of those early years but doesn't quite rise to Gallery of Honor levels (and if I'm honest, we have a couple of people in our Gallery that probably don't deserve to be there as it is).
