Tournament postponed by FIFA due to Covid-19. Expecting to happen in 2021 as a U18 tournament after seeing the men Olympic tournament becoming a U24 tournament.
FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2020™: 17 February – 7 March 2021 (tournament to keep original eligibility criteria: players born on or after 1 January 2003 and on or before 31 December 2005);
Oceania postpones the U17 qualifiers, for the third time https://www.oceaniafootball.com/ofc-tournaments-postponed/ To be held in Tahiti. The original U16 tournament (December 2019) was pushed back due to the international measles outbreak.
Why aye man, like "India will have the football-crazy northeast crowd behind them as they play all their group matches of the women's U-17 FIFA World Cup at Guwahati's Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium. World football governing body FIFA on Tuesday released the revised schedule for the tournament, which is to take place from February 17 to March 7 (2021)." "Indian Women's Team To Play FIFA Under-17 World Cup Group Matches In Guwahati" - https://sports.ndtv.com/football/in...7-world-cup-group-matches-in-guwahati-2251037 The Indira Gandhi stadium in Guwahati - (img: Phukan, cc-by-sa) Dunno much about that state, Assam, but it hasn't been easy for players: there's an interview from 2019 with midfielder Ringkhangsri Boro. The state is physically isolated from the rest of India (next to Bangladesh), but the neighbouring state of Manipur is India's strongest in women's football and won 20 national championships in the first 25 seasons.
For what I read (and it could be wrong) the North East is more soccer friendly than Cricket Friendly.
Either one is a fine choice But yeah, all the reports mention they love their soccer out there - quite unusual in India. The U17 World Cup final will be in Mumbai at the DY Patil Stadium, which is controversially listed on Wise Wikipedia as a "football stadium", even though it's clearly more of a cricket stadium. Note the curving edge, boundary rope, and the game of cricket that's going on (Fake edit) Oh my god (I mean, they've been able to play soccer in Yankee Stadium too, but that doesn't make it a good idea)
Fixture list As posted on the South African FA site, the finals schedule is set - so far, only India are confirmed in group A, as team A1. (For South Africa to qualify, they would have to beat Morocco.) https://www.safa.net/2020/07/04/fifa-u-17-womens-world-cup-2021-revised-fixtures-announced/ Oceania is #cancalled! New Zealand U17s have qualified in sad circumstances, as the OFC has made a drastic decision to cancel its qualifiers. The weird part is that the coronavirus isn't prevalent in Oceania (most countries anyway), but overseas travel is still restricted. And for these young players, "OFC tournaments featuring players from this age bracket are generally scheduled in school holidays and no clear window was available in the coming months", from the confederation's press release.
Slots allocation: Host India (AFC) AFC Japan, Korea DPR CAF 3 slots CONCACAF 3 slots CONMEBOL 2 slots OFC New-Zealand UEFA 3 slots
Looking at situation in North Korea it's quite doubtful they will send the team. China (3rd in AFC U16 Championship) will probably take their spot.
let's see if the qualifiers happen for some countries. It may be default allocations if a good percentage of teams can't travel.
Wouldn't matter much as long as its attended by the masses hopefully. And the game is ongoing after delays.
Crowds would be good, but just hosting the games at all will be a huge task, while coronavirus is still in India - even 6 months from now, the country may remove the virus, but not the risk of the virus. (Maybe Fifa would have a policy on allowing fans at tournaments?) Football in a cricket stadium is fine by me, it just looked a bit odd in the photo... but no weirder than a match with a running track, I suppose. Cricket grounds were very important in soccer's early days, even some famous games were held there.
Yes, it is a worry if the Covid-19 is still very strong, I heard on the grapevine that there might be a plan B for FIFA.
Host India (AFC) AFC Japan, Korea DPR CAF 3 slots CONCACAF 3 slots CONMEBOL 3 slots OFC New-Zealand UEFA England, Germany and Spain
CONMEBOL tournament now scheduled for Nov. 30 - Dec. 19 in Uruguay. CAF Final round now scheduled for Oct. 30 & Nov. 20. CONCACAF is still TBD.
Still no update from CAF or CONCACAF is their qualifiers will still happen. Or anything from FIFA if the tournament gets postponed again.
India are out, according to Ghanaian journalist Ayishatu Zakaria Ali: FIFA U17 Women World Cup: India pulls out of hosting the tournament www.sportedge.net/fifa-u17-women-world-cup-india-pulls-out-of-hosting-the-tournament (Archive) One anonymous Ghana FA source says they've heard it from Fifa too. No official information, but the CAF final qualifiers in Africa are postponed indefinitely.
It's quite possible. Yesterday in NHK news I saw Indian gov member saying that although new cases are dropping in numbers, country needs at least 6 months to get the current situation under control.
Wonder if it gets cancelled completely now? Doubt anyone else steps up last minute considering the pandemic. Wouldn't be surprised if both this and the U-20 tournament get cancelled.
Probably the best alternative. Probably should do it in 2021 since the girls will be already be beyond their age level in 2 years.
