Considering it's almost impossible to go to Europe as an American without an EU passport given the pandemic, it's about the only way to get there. We may see more than a few Yanks having to sit outside waiting for it to be okay to go to Europe once again.
article goes through the depth chart of wolfsburg II by position. translation: Defensive midfield: Dominik Marx, Michele Rizzi, Soufiane Messeguem (from the U19), Bryang Kayo (new signing from Orange County SC). May might also be a candidate for defensive midfield, but is first with the professionals. "We have many options at the position," said Bürger, who is also pleased that Marx is "back in the juice" after a protracted metatarsal fracture. Access Kayo would even be eligible for the U19. https://www.sportbuzzer.de/artikel/...-so-sieht-der-kader-des-vfl-ii-jetzt-aus/amp/
annndddd another wolfsburg announcement. is this good they announced it twice?
this article is behind a paywall but a wolfsburg fan was kind enough to send me screenshots of the translated version. https://www.wolfsburger-nachrichten...uerger-legt-mit-dem-VfL-Wolfsburg-II-los.html translation: The batteries are charged accordingly, which the trainer also expects from his US newcomer Bryang Kayo. The 17-year-old is the only external addition to the U23 so far and would also be eligible to play for the U19. “Where he ultimately collects his time depends on himself. But he is a full member of the squad, ”explains Bürger, adding:“ We want to promote and challenge Bryang. ”
promoting and challenging sounds like all a kid would want to hear, but i am really hoping wolfsburg feel pressure to immediately demonstrate the pivot and refocus isnt just lip service
it’s official What a blessing to be able to officially announce i’ve signed with @vfl_wolfsburg. This wouldn’t be possible without the amazing help of my family, my agents, friends & coaches who have supported me this far. Can’t wait to get started!💚🐺💚 #teamwass pic.twitter.com/4Fba1QLUjO— bk (@BryangKayo) July 27, 2020
No more than Haji Wright was, really. There will always be some players who try to take unusual routes to Europe. More power to them; the more avenues, the better. If I were advising the players though, I'd almost always advise that they stick with the usual channels of player development, unless they're a Reyna, Pulisic, or McKennie-level prospect. Maybe Kayo is that; I don't really know anything about him.
I doubt the MLS sees it as that but I hope we see more and more of this. That will force them to change their approach. Look at the training compensation. They shut that down so they didn’t have to pay clubs like this for the youth. They wanted to flex as the big boy on the block. Then Europe came knocking and started poaching the best youth and they changed their tune real quick.
I know you’re unimpressed with Wolfsburg youth promotions. You seem to have researched it a lot more than I have so no real commentary there. will just say it is clearly not random. They seem to be making a point of looking to American youth.
Any club of Wolfsburg's size (read: financial resources) would be stupid not to look to American youth players. They're basically free, so if they don't work out, oh well. If they do, congrats, you get a good player for a while and pure profit when they're sold. Honestly, I'm surprised there aren't more teams making concerted efforts to bring in American youths.
It’s clearly not random. Wolfsburg is going to keep rolling the dice with Americans and hope for hits — market inefficiency. We will see what happens with Llanez this year, I’m cautiously optimistic.
Why would their focus be almost solely on the LA area & separate or even adversarial entities there tout sending their players to one non big club who has no proven record of being good for youths? It smells funny. Other clubs are competing for Americans. Sure, we'll see what happens with Llanez, and maybe it all works out in the end. But it's already been negative to not incorporate him a little at the end of the season, when at times there was nothing to play for, while the manager acknowledged he was favoring older players. That's the info we had when KHF & Kayo signed to officially go to Wolfsburg. Now we got hope & faith.
Very interesting article. The rules surrounding MLS rosters, transfers, etc. are so freaking confusing. There has got to be a better way where the player, MLS and the foreign club can all benefit. I think it's important for MLS clubs to be rewarded/ compensated for players coming out of their academies so that there is a concerted effort to have strong academies, which in the end has to help with US player development. Obviously, that compensation (or the crazy rule system they have) shouldn't be a hindrance for players that don't want to be there. I don't claim to know enough about this but, it just seems like a real f'd up system making it harder on all parties.
Kayo was a DC United academy player. He basically agreed to sign with Wolfsburg even before he signed with Orange County. Orange County also just signed an Inter Miami academy player. They’re positioning themselves at signing kids who are going to sign in Europe when they turn 18. My guess is mainly to eventually get some training compensation and/or solidarity payments.
By all appearances, Kayo is a high-level prospect who was even brought aboard to train with the US men prior to Covid and reportedly did well. The Nats likely had an eye on him for the U20s...back when he was 16.
