I think the reasons have already been stated on this thread. I think he is likely to get much less game action, and will be less sharp as a result. i understand the counter arguments expressed here, but don’t find them as persuasive.

whereelse would he be going on loan? i'd rather 1 season as no.2 at City than another playing with relegation fodder

Ok. Not saying your view is unreasonable. It just isn’t my view.

Right. The notion that Ederson is an old hand GK with 1-2 years left just waiting to hand off the reins is ridiculous. He could easily have 5-7 years left at the highest level, and possibly more. And he is better than Steffan.

All this from a single source, ESPN, which has been wrong many times before.

Uersfeld's German football newsers for ESPN are pretty solid - a lot of them are aggregations of local media but he's a well-respected reporter in his own right. Besides, it's not the first time it's been reported that Steffen would replace Bravo, whose contract is expiring.

Probably but it is too soon in a keepers career to know for sure.

FYI, Ben Hamer was Charlton's No. 1 in League 1 and the Championship before moving to Leicester as No. 2 beforee= becoming their No. 3 - he made all of 12 appearances in 4 seasons - and played in Leicester's final CL Group Stage game the season after they won the EPL.

He then moved on to Bristol City, then Huddersfield and now Derby - and can't get a starter's place.

thanks dad but was the poster trying to imply this could be Steffen's fate because quite a few folks who are non-American have hailed him while in the BL

Like others, I was like "who?". Looked him up. This is the first line of his Wikipedia entry (accentuation mine):

Benjamin John Hamer (/ˈheɪmər/; born 20 November 1987) is a pretend professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Derby County on loan from Huddersfield Town.[3]

Seems like you're not the only one who thinks the guy is a joke.

Implying that Steffen will spend the next 1-2 seasons bench-warming, then slipping down the pecking order before becoming a No. 2 in the bottom half of the championship? Doubtful. More like he was saying don't read anything into Steffen starting random dead rubber CL games.

Personally, I have mixed feelings about this. The price of those Citeh paycheques - and not starting his European adventure at a mid-table SPL side  - is having a limited amount of say in where he goes next. They've said "you've taken the opportunity we gave you. Well-done. Our return is a better No. 2 than Bravo," he's got to salute and execute and, besides, who knows what can happen. On the plus side, he's going to be getting some of the best coaching in the world and training with/against some of the world's top players, something that can only help with his technical development. Witnessing the levels of pressure EPL title contenders have to deal with, and put on themselves, and how the players cope with it will be incredibly valuable as well.

That said, Ederson and him are contemporaries and while Steffen is really good, I'm not alone in finding it difficult to see him unseating the Brazilian any time soon. He has to get decent PT - starts in all League Cup ties and pre-semi FA Cup ties - this season and next. If he isn't it's time to insist on another loan or a transfer.

I think it's a good thing that Pep has decided that Steffen is good enough to bring back to the club as the number 2. You never know when shit will go wrong and the number 2 gets the number 1 spot suddenly. Even if that doesn't happen, I agree with you that training every day with the class of players at Man City, and under Pep directly, is a good thing. Further, if he shows really well then just maybe in a year they decide to sell Ederson for a huge fee and move Steffen up. I don't know how likely that is, but I think if Steffen gets close to the quality of Ederson then it's a possibility.

That was inserted today. Derby had a 6-pointer against Brentford yesterday and lost 3-1. They'd come back from going 1-0 down in the third minute and were well in the game, before Harmer had an absolute howler that gifted Brentford the lead. it's not fatal to their promotion hopes, but it's a big psychological blow; two defeats in a row have dropped them from 6th to 10th so the fans are pissed as hell. Pissed enough to "update" his Wikipedia page.

Not this season. Ederson was on the bench for the League Cup final. Bravo started and went 90', as he had in the earlier rounds

So Steffen pulls rank on Horvath if he's warming up the bench in ManCity over the other warming the bench in Brugge, right?

I’d rather that he’s the No. 2 at Man City than starting in MLS. He’s still likely to get 18-20 games for City, more if there’s an injury. He’ll get to train with and learn from the best on a top 5 club in the world. And he’s likely to add to his trophy case. Not a bad gig for a 25 year old.
