Also, he joined in mid-2017 from FC Astoria Walldorf and, previously, SG Oftersheim. So it may be noteworthy that he got there moving "up" the club ladder, so to speak.

Are there any FULL nationals in overseas academies? I only see dual nationals mentioned at the U18 level, presumably because of the passport issue. But with all of the US military stationed overseas accompanied with families, I'm surprised not to see at least a few of the kids make their way to an academy while their parents are stationed there.

Wondering if there are rules against it....or just if the odds are against it. Would love to see some of these teens come back after a 4-year tour of training with a European club and be 100% tied to USYNT or USMNT.

I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what McKennie did. 3-4 years in a German academy as a kid and then back to the states and FC Dallas.

That one worked out pretty well! But I think he was just playing for a youth soccer club.

I think there are tons of military kids playing local soccer overseas, but I'm talking the actual academy ranks of professional clubs in their teenage years.

It's fairly common in Germany and has been for some time. Over the years Kaiserlautern has had many of them. The most typical outcome is that, as you suspected, they just don't break through at the Bundesliga/B2/MLS-type level. Sometimes they end up coming back to the U.S. for college.

not doing too well in U17.
1 goal in 12 games playing 392 minutes. He's only started 2 games all season on top of that. Been mostly a sub player.

Understanding that most military tours are 3-4 years, so there's a limit how far a kid can go.

That's true. But my sense is that not all these kids are necessarily sons of soldiers on temporary postings. Many of the ODP Europe kids I've tracked over the years, for example, are still there well into adulthood.

Understand, but the original question was about non-dual citizens. It would be rare for non-duals to be in Germany for that long. I would be surprised to find many who don't have at least one EU citizen parent.

he barely played at Sandhausen U19, so he went to 6th division, basically amateur level. Yeah we won't about him for years if ever.
