Interesting that Mai was on the bench for this one. I wonder if he's had injury issues. Coming into the year Mai was definitely more highly regarded than Chris. They were born three years apart. They play the same position. The only big difference? Mai has been with Bayern for six years. It's almost like too perfect of a comparison point for how much Bayern regards Chris.
*3 days apart. He had been injured. Interestingly though, the Bayern 2 coach pointed out in a recent interview that Chris coming into the central defense (in place of mai: who moved to 1st team bench) was a turning point of the season
that bayern ii tidbit is interesting since we have almost universally heard that mai is held in much higher regard than richards. maybe a matter of ceilings and floors but coach saying that about two players the same age does seem to either elevate richards or hope to light a fire under mai
The best indication of what Bayern thinks of Chris is that they close him amongst the young players to get the experience of clinching the 8th title. That was a: this is what it feels like to win titles with us, as we expect u win more with us later
not sure about that. They more likely are setting him up for a permanent transfer to recoup some investment.
They paid $1.5 million for him. That is not an investment for Bayern. It's a rounding error. And No one is paying them money because he played 2 minutes in a game. He is a 20 year central defender. They don't start for league championship teams. Bayern will loan him next year with hopes he comes back
They generally don’t start for league champs. You’re right. If we look at what they might be doing we could take a peak at Boateng, Sule (and many others). Boateng was starting for Hamburg and Sule was starting for Hoffenheim. I hope Richards can get a loan to a mid table team and get some reps or better yet a sale with buy back clause.
Another is Mats Hummels. Loaned from Bayern to Dortmund for his age 19/20 season and eventually stayed there on a permanent move.
That's not how German's think about money. They will always look for an ROI. And they also have to recoup the investment in the youth system as a whole, given that the vast majority of players result in no payout. It is this type of thinking that keeps them at the top.
While you may be right, I see no evidence of it as of now. They extended his contract in January. He started basically every game for the reserve team, ahead of other talented youngsters. They have continually praised his development. They have brought him to 1st team in January camp. Anyway, the new data point will be in 2 weeks when they have their champion league training
Sources tell CBS Sports that Bayern Munich defender Chris Richards is receiving interest from Holland, Belgium and Germany. If he were to move, it would be a loan, I'm told. But hearing Hansi Flick has him in his future first-team plans, wants to get him more involved.— Roger Gonzalez (@RGonzalezCBS) July 8, 2020
The independent German reports I've read suggest he's not quite up to Bayern level. I hope that's wrong, but it is also the most likely outcome. For every Pulisic or Reyna, there are many dozen Gabe Ferraris and Danny Szetelas.
Link? The only source that matters is Bayern. They gave him 30 starts for Bayern 2. The coach named him as one of 3 most influential player on team. Brought him to 1st team camp. They gave him a debut as a 20 year old cb. Long way from Danny szetela
They were posted here a couple months ago. If you haven't been keeping up with the conversation I can't help you.
I think the reports I saw said he might not be Bayern level, but they believe he's Bundesliga level, top 6-8 level, which means he might be Bayern level depending on his development. Regardless, I assume he's not Bayern level, which 99.9% of professionals aren't. Zero shame in that. If he gets a loan to Holland or a lower level B1 team, and performs capably, he's in the mix to be a starter with us. This news changes zilch.
Tenorio has written an article on Richards, mostly focusing on his season with Bayern, the excitement of his debut, and the US national team. Richards told Tenorio that Gregg Berhalter contacted him after his debut with Bayern, and that Berhalter has already attempted to call him up to Camp Cupcake (which Bayern declined). https://theathletic.com/1917012/202...rst-team-chris-richards-is-ready-to-progress/ There's nothing new on his club prospects for next season.
