I want to be careful not to sound overly harsh here, but this is an ignorant comment. Professional athletes have figured out how to get the absolute most out of their bodies, but that doesn’t make them impervious. Athletes get sick all the time. An NHL team is lucky if they go through an entire season without getting ravaged by the flu at some point. Athletes get cancer, they have heart defects that don’t get detected until problems arise — To think that just because someone runs around the soccer field means the laws of physiology and medicine don’t apply to them is just wishful thinking. Now, as a general rule, I would think that the healthier you are in general, the better off you’re going to be when you catch any disease. That much I’ll concede. But there are healthy people all over the place who have absolutely gotten their asses kicked by this thing.
In general young adults and people who live a healthy lifestyle tend to have strong immune systems. Look at the risk rate for influenza as an example. However, COVID seems to be a horse of a different color. (That’s not insensitive, is it? The horse doesn’t care, right?) It seems to trigger cytokine storms in certain individuals. I haven’t heard or read stats on the epidemiology of those affected by what is essentially an overreaction of one’s immune system. It seems it can happen to anyone. So there’s that.
Crew have said first positive covid case was a player on the first team. It's being reported a 2nd Crew player has also tested positive. Crew confirm second positive test 👇👇👇 https://t.co/Xr28tzyZtK— Andrew Wiebe (@andrew_wiebe) July 3, 2020
Second positive test of the same player, not a second player. So I read this back ... and if you don't read the statement, which c'mon it's Twitter, this was probably a confusing tweet.Second positive test of the same player, thereby confirming one COVID-19 positive in the group. There is not a second player who has tested positive. https://t.co/0FRxcljM9N— Andrew Wiebe (@andrew_wiebe) July 3, 2020
He’s just a fan. He has no more or less information than we have. Back in the Save The Crew era, he would repeatedly tweet at Precourt begging him to reconsider and called upon the many beers they shared in the local bars before/after games. At least, I don’t think he has any more info.
Entire crew traveling party tested again. They all came back negative. Practice resumes tomorrow so I’ve read. If there is any press allowed at training it will be fairly easy to see who is effected. Obviously they will be out the first game or two. Otherwise we proceed as planned.
I will point out that overseas, they seem to be managing pretty well. Germany finishes their season over the next few days (all that's left after today are three relegation matches)--and they had issues with Dresden and COVID, which they were able to resolve. Other leagues are proceeding. Australia is even allowing limited fans to events (being an island continent does have some advantages). Now I don't expect having fans to happen in the US any time soon. But they should be able to get the season in and relatively safely--if people do not panic. I say "relatively" as almost all of these sports are contact sports of one sort or another and injuries from that do happen--quite a bit.
Ironically, seemingly not due to FCD's multiple players having tested positive, but due to Vancouver still being stuck in Canada.
Did Toronto and Montreal make it? At the rate countries seem to be shutting down travel *from* the US, I'd be hesitant myself to fly into the Orlando from another country. If you get in...you may never...get out. (Ominous voice.)
The rest of the team tested negative. Infected player still infected. Multiple sources confirm to @JeffreyCarlisle and myself that the follow up Covid tests performed on several members of the Columbus Crew traveling party, all came back negative. This comes after one Crew player tested positive in the bubble earlier in the week.— Stefano Fusaro (@S_Fusaro) July 3, 2020
“You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave” Or “There’s no way out of here, when you come in you’re in for good.”
