I have no love for Bruce Arena, but his appearance on BSIthePodcast gave some insight into how he interacts with players, which is a lot different than how he treats regular people and media. I could see why he is a good man-manager.

Perhaps, but in my experience the best indication of a person's true personality is how (s)he treats those in subordinate roles, and he fails that miserably.
When I was a student, the front office staff in the career office told me that company recruiters would often observe how students treated the staff, and that if a student was rude, the recruiter would cross him off the list before the interview. (Note that the reverse is not true -- being friends with the underlings will not result in a job offer. Though it probably doesn't hurt.)
Wow, which galaxative wanker do I hate the most? The list is nearly endless. Cobi the half-man of course is near the top of the list. SquareHead Hermosillo of course. What a total wanker, and we never got compensation for that MoFo going to the filth. (Sunil is at the top of my list for worst MLS honchos.) Paul Caligiuri was a dick too. Calichman was a ahole, even when he played for us. Roy Myers was really good and it pissed me off that they had him. Turds. Victorine and Vagenas should not both have landed with the filth. That was draft manipulation by Evil MLS, and then they were both arrogant Aholes of the first order. Luis Hernandez was a dick. Califf was an ass, only slightly less of an ass when he played for us. El Pedito! Carlos Ruiz. What a flaming dirtbag. Diving, whining, dirty, fouling player. Alex Pineda Chacon, also a dick. Tyrowngoal Marshall was an ass too. Going back to the beginning, El Tanque (Hurtado) was an ass too. Good player, but mostly he just ran into people and knocked them over. Narcissus of course, selfish, spoiled, clueless, self-absorbed ahole. Excellent player of course, and I loved it when he played for us, but what a jerk! SpiceUnderwearBoy of course. Dema Kovalenko, a player who could have justifiably been red-carded in every game he ever played. Juninho was dick. Robbie Keane of course, cheating, self-important assbite. Ashely Cole, a filthy, dirty, cheating bag of crap. So notorious that MLS would not allow Wankouver to sign him, but then let the filth sign him. Jelle Van Damme, another vile, cheating, ankle kicking piece of dung. Zlatan - king ahole. Honestly, I'd need to watch them play a match to remember some of these guys and if they pissed me off just because they were good, or where they evil cheating wankers? Whatever, they all suck. Interesting. I'm glad they are at least partially measuring results and re-evaluating. Purely based on the news reports I'm seeing (which I realize is not conclusive of anything) I would think a good policy is to eliminate social gatherings of multiple households: church gatherings, birthday parties (or any kind of party), bars. This should be enforced as it is pretty conclusive that the disease does spread this way. Permit non-social gatherings (grocery stores, home depot, ...) contingent on reasonable enforcement of mask wearing and distancing. We've all seen videos of where this type of enforcement can get ugly but so far it doesn't seem to be too bad. The tricky ones are restaurants, parks, and beaches. These things are used safely by people staying outdoors and distancing from other households. Although these are also exactly the places where multiple households will gather to socialize. Trying to enforce anti-social behavior is going to lead to some really bad situations. It seems that Newsom's policy is to enforce non-confrontational policies such as closing parking lots. Just put a little friction in the way of people gathering. Also we don't know what the risks actually are in these situations. When I see video of people at the beach my instinct is that it actually looks pretty safe - the beach is windy and people seem to be distancing. However when I go to downtown on a Friday night it kinda looks like a big outdoor street party and my instinct is that it isn't super safe.
We are a nation full of stupid people. https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/30/health/us-coronavirus-tuesday/index.html https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/02/us/alabama-coronavirus-parties-trnd/index.html I fully expect our pandemic to get much, much worse before it gets better. We're just too stupid and self-centered to manage this sort of crisis. My county has gone to phase 2 (which request should have been denied because we don't meet the criteria) and now some fair fraction of the population are acting like it's all over. No masks, no social distancing, do whatever, everything is cool now because we're in phase 2. At the same time, we're having a strong increase in the number of cases. Not so many deaths yet, and we still have plenty of hospital capacity, but this is really very, very stupid. Go Quakesfans!! - Mark
This has to be fake news. Health issues aside, it defies logic because anyone could already be infected when attending the party. I started listening to the absolutely brilliant “Power Corrupts” podcast by Brian Klaas. He has an episode about The Godfather of Fake News, a “liberal troll” in Maine who writes many of the horrible headlining articles that are devoured and promulgated by Trump supporters. The troll insists it is “satire” and refuses to admit he is feeding the flames of the far right. Fake news is an industry that Facebook has spawned, where we end up not being able to trust any media.
My son and I were just looking at the copy of the schedule I'd stuck on my computer -- highlighting away games I'd hoped to attend in person. We're almost 2/3 through the season! He said, just think, we'd probably already be out of playoff contention. I guess the fact that we're not is one positive outcome?
Total population of the US - 331,100,000 Total number of cases - 2,930,000 Total number of deaths - 1,300,000 Total number recovering - 2,800,000 At only a .0392630% death rate, I like my odds.
1) Not just deaths -- the lingering illnesses that affect many, including healthy young people. For ex, this young doctor: https://www.statnews.com/2020/07/08/my-covid-19-symptoms-lasted-100-plus-days/ 2) The morbidity/mortality numbers (by the way, that's 130,000 deaths -- slightly less than 1,300,000) are low because a lot of people have not been at work/school and thus the R(0) has been suppressed. Those numbers are going way up. 3) Actually 5% death rate for those who test positive. And that's not counting the thousands who have not recovered after months of illness. Not great odds at all, unless you're a hermit without any contact with others Wear a mask. Social distance. My family has been SIP for four months as of this week. Our country would look more like Europe if people had taken this seriously. Instead, the infection rate is increasing. If any of you ever want to go to an Earthquakes game again, these kinds of numbers should matter to you.
On Monday, there were about 15 boys + 4 coaches at the local high school, running a practice. They were just warming up when I left, but I assume it was football. I didn't realize youth sports were starting back up in San Mateo County...
Do you realize that in the US each year we lose about 2.5M to ALL causes of death, that includes cancer, drugs, drunk driving, heart attacks, gun violence and so forth. This 2.5M is 0.75% of the population. Basically if you know 100 people then only 3 of them will die in the next 4 years. If we get to a 5% death rate then you will attend 5 funerals every year for your 100 friends which is a 625% increase in deaths.

However folks who survive are finding that the longer-term situation can be quite challenging, with a lot of continuing symptoms, compared to a normal flu, because this also affects cerebral and vascular processes. It may not kill you, but it may make your life miserable. I know several people who - months after recovery - are still experiencing major health and mental issues - including one in her 20s... https://www.pulmonologyadvisor.com/...d5bd167d86262b629368&mpweb=1323-98539-2604830
