Turner opts out of current deal. Broadcast of remaining fixtures in limbo. https://sbjsbd.biz/3hXzJj2
The ESPN/Fox deal was a dream come true. Too bad that's a thing of the past. Paywalls are here to stay.
Can't believe it didn't work out for a company that thought it was a good idea to headline their UCL coverage with Steve Nash wearing ugly, ill-fitting golf shirts on a set that looked like it was made out of particleboard.
There is probably little incentive to show the remaining tournament in English when I bet most if not all of the remaining matches will be either on Univision/Unimas. Maybe CBS will have some incentive just to hype up next year and put on some live programming on the CBSSN but I bet no one will really care and just watch in Spanish. (I know there's a hand full of people here who want an English feed but the majority of people here in the USA do not mind Univision's family of networks being the only way to see it.)
I prefer the Spanish language coverage too. And the only Spanish I know are the few words my lifelong Latino friends taught me. Haha Plus, as an Olympiacos supporter that watches all their matches, domestic and international, the English speakers don’t add anything to the broadcast. They just recite press kit facts when it came to Olympiacos anyway. So it’s not like they add anything to the broadcast. Plus, the Turner coverage looked and felt amateur since day 1. The Univision network coverage looks way more professional. And Turner never had a Zona Futbol show either. And their BR live service was a disgrace. Poor interface and didn’t show all the matches of the leagues they had rights to. No reason not to be showing only 2 to 3 matches per round from Belgium or Scotland.
It is an OTA in most markets so rabbit ears would be a good investment. Serious I did say that a hand full of people around here care so you are in that aforementioned minority.
I’m happy to watch it in any language or with no commentary at all. But by golly (even with the caveats of the current edition) this is the flippin’ champions league. There has to be an english feed.
I hated B/R’s coverage. Abdo was a good studio host but the rest were mostly Americans with little to no CL experience and of course Steve Nash (bleh). That said no one shows more than 2-3 Scottish League matches per week. Not even Scotland. They only get the same 2-3 matches on tv that we were getting. Not sure about Belgian Jupiler League. There might be a way to show all of their matches live. I wish espn + would show all of the leagues and put on as many matches as the leagues allow.
The international broadcaster for the Belgian League only shows 3 games a matchday. Any more games would probably require inhouse announcers for Turner (and I doubt you would even want that) The international broadcaster for the Scottish League really only shows the games that are on Sky and BT (with their announcers)
The CL Draw will be on CBS All Access and CBS Sports HQ live tomorrow, looks like CBS will be covering the CL early. https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/SB-Blogs/Breaking-News/2020/07/CBS-UEFA.aspx
It will be interesting to see how many matches air on CBSSN. The Final should be on CBS but you never know.
Perhaps it's time to start a CBS thread. I don't see one. And I have absolutely no clue as to how they're gonna cover it, what channels they might use, etc. p.s. Are CBS already gonna show matches for this summer's UCL matches in Lisbon? Or are those still on TBS/Univision?
The big news over the last 24 hours is that CBS will cover the Lisbon tournament. (But it could be mostly streaming for all we know.)
The Champions League quarterfinals and semifinals will disappear from U.S. network and cable English-language television this summer under the new contract between UEFA and CBS, and the remainder of the 2019-20 competition will be primarily streamed. CBS took over rights from TBS during the coronavirus pandemic break and said Wednesday the only matches it plans to televise are the round of 16 second legs of Manchester City-Real Madrid on Aug. 8 and Barcelona-Napoli the following day, plus the final on Aug. 23. They will be on the CBS Sports Network cable channel. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/2020-champions-league-final-dropped-202938940.html
Sounds a lot like how Disney/ESPN has handled the FA Cup. They generally provided coverage via ESPN+ but made at least one exception for one of the QF matches by offering it on TV. It baffles me that these 2 big Finals aren't thrown on a TV channel. I guess they're simply holding the games hostage, only releasable if you pay the streaming "ransom". I feel more OK with them doing that for early rounds but I'm old school for sure, in thinking that finals should be televised. Period.
It's only because of the pandemic that the QF match of the FA Cup made it to TV. FA Cup is an ESPN+ product. In reality, the more matches ESPN puts on TV, the more people complain about "why didn't they put xxx vs yyy on TV?". I completely understand the old school mentality but in this era of streaming, that kind of thinking will only drive you nuts. Streaming is the future of sport (it's actually the "now" of sport). In a related topic, when the Bundesliga starts and ESPN take over this season, ESPN promised 4 matches on regular TV. I assumed in the past that both Bayern vs Dortmund clashes would represent 50% of that commitment. While they will likely show 1 of the matches, I wouldn't be surprised if the other 3 matches are much more low-key in nature. The ESPN TV channels are used to promote ESPN+. Nothing more. The big matches (like the FA Cup Final) will and should remain on ESPN+ because THAT is what people pay for. Yet, I can see why that is frustrating if you are "old school"... SA www.soccertvblog.com
Agreed. The main reason I want that is because even in 2020 streaming is a heck of a lot less reliable than TV. But to be clear, the article is only saying the Final is not on the main CBS channel. Its still on CBS SN. So a big dramatic headline over nothing.
