Unfortunately this will be the case... St Louis Archers would be one of the coolest and most area-specific names in the league.
I certainly do not want FC,AC, SC, etc, but St. Louis Archers sounds like a 3rd grade basketball team. if that’s a name that evolves from fans like The Note or Redbirds, I’d be ok with it. but it is not a professional sounding name.
Here are the 10 best we heard, in no particular order https://kmox.radio.com/articles/top-10-possible-mascot-nicknames-st-louis-mls-team
In a world without COVID-19, this probably would’ve been unveiled by now. In reality, it’s hard to say where it stands given the organization’s decision to shelve the matter until life returns to something resembling normalcy in their region. “Given the current environment, we don’t feel it’s appropriate to make any major announcements or updates until our city and region has started to recover,” wrote Kindle Betz. “While it’s been amazing to see the continued excitement around St. Louis’ new MLS team, we want people to be able to focus on things that are truly important – the health and well-being of their families, friends and the community.” Setting aside news on those two fronts, Kindle Betz and the entire MLS4THELOU group have lots in front of them, including some key decisions to make and relationships to build, over the next two years. Their market, arguably the richest in American soccer history, is unique among recent MLS expansion arrivals. https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020...share_button&utm_campaign=social_share_button
Translation - we want a crowd at our announcement and currently we cannot have a crowd. FFS - if what she said is true, it is total BS. No one would feel offended by an announcement. In fact, it might give some people something to cheer about. This is all about not being able to have a crowd.
From one of the sportswriters chat on stltoday.com just a few minutes ago... 7 minutes ago How about "Confluence STL" for our MLS team? Missouri and Mississippi rivers meet in St. Louis with the city flag on the front of the kit. Team colors? Exact same as Blues with very little red trim. 6 minutes ago That's my P-D colleague Benjamin Hochman's favorite, and he makes a strong case, but it's not the name. I do know that much. I guess we'll find out for sure sometime.
Not much more on MLS in this chat, but i did find this Q & A interesting as well... 39 minutes ago The Charlotte Observer in late May said a branding announcement would happen in June...hope they have something up their sleeve since June is over in 7 days. I did notice Charlotte trademarked several names, STL has not (yes i am a nerd) 37 minutes ago I can offer some background on that. There's no guarantee the trademarks Charlotte's owner applied for will be the name of the team. Could be. But not necessarily. The league actually owns the team name, not the individual team. And yes, the local ownership group is aware people are tracking trademarks. They're not going to give it away that way.
Over in the Charlotte forum, they just posted that they are hoping to have their announcement next month now. Guess the wait goes on...
I'm interested in seeing how much thought they put into it, especially the logo. I think it would be a mistake not to include the fleur-de-lis since it both represents the city's French heritage and also it is the same symbol that the large Bosnian-American St. Louis community identifies with.
---------------------- Yes, old NASL history done properly when brought into MLS is ok. I indirectly became a "Stars" fan when the franchise shifted to Orange County and became the Surf. Although my real team was the Aztecs, Surf were always #2 since they played in a different conference (ala NFL). Always wanted them to meet in the Soccer Bowl and that never happened, first good taste of traveling fans showing up at each others games and along with San Diego Sockers, good times at THAT time in soccer history. Time to move on. The name "Stars" is just too generic , one step up from FC in my opinion. So unless you are planning to become the second coming of the NY Cosmos and every player on the field is truly a star or super start..... Go with something new or historical or a blend that respects the city and soccer. But be sure to include the "fleur-de-lis" somehow as that is a cool icon. Then it would be fun to watch St. Louis vs. Montreal !
The Stars name in St. Louis predates the NASL team. Here is an article that was posted today about the Negro League Baseball St. Louis Stars and their former stadium. https://www.stltoday.com/sports/col...cle_1e743dd1-037d-5438-830a-879a84435854.html FYI, the corner they are talking about in the article is about 8-10 blocks west of the MLS Stadium site
