Here is the link to the USL site's article. https://www.uslchampionship.com/news_article/show/1110593 There will be 5 groups of 4 and 3 groups of 5. Groups A thru D will be announced tomorrow and E thru H on Friday. 16 games total for the regular season. Games played already this year count toward the 16 game total.
I feel like two of those "groups of 5" will be out west due to the geographical distance a lot of those teams will have to contend with, but ironically, it's easier to position them in groups due to their placement compared to the east where you can come up with plenty of combinations, but we may also see a situation in which they'll say "screw it" and put Memphis in a group with Tulsa and OKC.
I immediately thought where are they going to put the groups of 5. Also what came to mind is dealing with the teams that have played to games and those that have played none. I suspect, like you, the groupings will be a pretty wild mess. We will see the next two days.
GROUP A: *Tacoma *Portland Timbers II *Reno *Sacramento GROUP B *LA Galaxy II *Orange County *San Diego *Las Vegas *Phoenix
Prediction for tomorrow: Group E: *Sporting Kansas City II *Saint Louis FC *Indy Eleven *Louisville City Group F: *Hartford United *NYRB II *Philadelphia Union 2 *Loudoun United *Pittsburgh Riverhounds Group G *Memphis 901 *Birmingham Legion *Atlanta United II *Charlotte Independence Group H *The Miami FC *Tampa Bay Rowdies *Charleston Battery *North Carolina FC Memphis and Pittsburgh are the two clubs that have the potential to go into any other area, in my opinion. Everyone else is, for the most part, firmly set in a place.
