I will go with Adams's own assessment of the type of player he is and the best position for him, over a bunch of idiots on a message board, (that includes both myself and Doyle). https://bsithepodcast.podbean.com/e/s2-episode-14-tyler-adams-part-1/ It's not right back.

I'm really afraid that he's not been the same post-injury and playing him as RB in their setup is basically setting him up for failure, so that when he's not even on the bench the fans won't be asking for him any more. And all he needed was proper time to recover instead of getting rushed back to play. But no, they did rush him back, and now are slowly burying him, a very good player otherwise. It makes me angry.
Up 2-0 in 11 minutes on an Olmo brace, great for the team. Playing a completely improvisational back four and conceding a majority of possession to Hoffenheim, so this isn't your standard 2-0 lead. Looks like a box four man midfield. Given the five subs, I'd think Adams has a 75% chance of playing, and the coaching staff has to already be considering options to avoid having to heavily defend for 75 minutes.
I see it totally differently. I'm into the first 15 minutes of the Hoffenheim game and it should be 2-2 by now. They are using Mukeleile as rb in 442 with Kampl and Laimer as the cmids. Olmo and Sabitzer are in the attack as mids with Timo and Schwik forward.. The team is more fluid in the attack with Laimer and Kampl but the defense is kinda ragged in front of goal. Mukeleile is trash altho some mite say "inconsistent". The defense was better with Adams in his comfort zone with Kampl. However there are far too many games for Adams to play 90 every fixture, especially in view of his history with adductor.
Another thing helping their offense is Klosterman playing cb instead of the guy who got red carded last week. Klosterman has displayed nifty passing.
60' Laimer down hurt, but it's Nkunku on instead of Adams. Laimer seems like he'll be ok for next match.
Adams coming on! Double sub, Lookman on also. Looks like Adams like-for-like with Kampl so maybe playing the double #6.

Konate on at cb for first time since matchday 5 when he came off injured. Konate was fantastic last season. Adams is doing a good job defending but with Nkuku and Adams on for Laimer and Kampfl, it seems possession not as good. That's the area Adams has to work on.
81' important, difficult clearance in the defensive box by Adams. They're holding it together, but they don't look great.
Adams gets space to run from midfield aggressively the top of the box, tees it up for Nkunku wide right, shot blocked, falls to Werner for a decent second chance but blocked. About four pretty good chances for RBL to make it 3-0 this half, including one called back for offside, but still 2-0.
Adams dangerous foul at the top of the box, free kick hits wall and leads to dangerous rebound, but saved. 90'.
Adams played another solid game. Gave up a dangerous foul towards the end... although I don't think he made contact with the offender. But it looked like a foul so fair is fair. He had a nice penetrating dribble to set up a chance and had several nice passes. Nothing spectacular again... just solid. I think he has the chance to be the best CDM defensively speaking on this team. His recovery speed and the ability to harry offenders leads to flow disruption and errant passes. He is also very accurate with his passes. I think he has completed 100% of his passes over the last two appearances (~110 minutes). But he still needs to prove himself offensively. I actually think the coach has tasked him with being the more defensive of the CDMs in the two-6 formation. At any rate, too bad injuries set him back because now he has to fight his way back in amidst tough competition in Kampl, Sabitzer and Laimer. Coach is giving him minutes but he hasn't done enough yet to prove he should be one of the starting 6s IMO. I think he has played better than Kampl since his return but not my that much. Sabitzer is better going forward but Adams passes are a lot more accurate.... I would still give Sabs the edge and I think the coach does too. And Laimer is the best of the bunch right now.
Yea Kampl provides more offense. That run Adams had is the type of output Kampl provides more often with solid through balls as well. If Adams can improve his vision (not easy but Donovan did), and show more of what he did going forward 3-4 times a game then he’ll supplant Kampl. I still think Adam’s ability to control the game isn’t what it was last season but he is getting closer.
Last year Adams didn't have as much competition for the spot. I think Sabitzer was playing higher up the pitch (winger)... Kampl was injured for most of the year and Laimer and Demme were not that productive offensively... Laimer only had one assist and one goal in 29 games and Demme had 2 assists and no goals in 26 games. Tyler got an opportunity to come in to start 2019 and had 2 assists in 10 games and had the position on lock-down. Now the other guys have stepped up their games and Tyler is coming off a long injury layoff. I think he just needs more confidence... the kind that comes with playing time. But now he has to do it under pressure... The road to a starting slot for him is much more difficult now. Perhaps it will help him in the long run... who knows? Some guys try to do too much and end up playing worse when they have to compete for the starting slot. But if that is the case then Tyler isn't as good as I give him credit for. I have high hopes for him.
Accurate passes are one thing; effective/incisive ones are another; where one is stationed in anticipation of receiving the ball and passing it on is another part of passing. Adams has some good ones and some that are pretty blah. He needs more time to improve on that.
Sure... but it all starts with accuracy. He is already very good at that. As a CDM you have to know that a large portion of your passes are not going to be of the attacking variety. 1st and foremost you have to be able to keep the ball and not make mistakes that allow the opponent to have numbers going the other way. Not sure we have seen a bad pass from Adams this season that led to a legit opportunity. So in my book he has the basics covered at the position. But if he wants to be a very good to great CDM then he needs to provide offensive opportunities as well. It is here where he needs the work. I think we are kind of agreeing... just think he deserves more credit then him having a large portion of his passes being labeled as blah.... at least from the CDM perspective. At RB he has been far from great. He made a pass in today's game that was just fantastic... he was on the left side of his D near OOB and led his opponent towards goal like he was going to go backwards and then delivered a ball in between two players to connect at midfield. I want to see more of that.
