There’s textbook Libertarians and right-wing radio Libertarians. I’m speaking of the latter, not the former. @kenosis is a reformed Libertarian but I would never imply that he was ever racist. I should have been more clear. EDIT: But if you’re implying black Libertarians can’t be in support of white supremacy or racism, we have a lot to discuss.
You might not, but you have said, in very direct words, that I care more about money than anything else, and that was long after I abandoned libertarianism. I got a chuckle about that - I forgot which of my volunteer jobs I went to later that evening, might have been my Kolbe House Prison Ministry at Cook County or the No One Dies Alone one at AMITA Bolingbrook, where my job as a volunteer was to sit with people actively dying in hospice because they had no family or friends that could sit with them. Much like progressivism, libertarianism is a pretty broad tent. It's a whole lot broader than the two camps you've made it into. Not sure I'd say the majority of them, but certainly a lot of them are much more into the civil libertarian aspects than the economic ones - they remember when the Left cheerily supported the Patriot Act, did nothing to close Guantanamo, and put detainees in cages. Many, like every human being I've ever met that wasn't in line to become a bodhisattva, live in a state of deep cognitive dissonance. You're under no responsibility to try and convert them, but I'd be happy to tell you about how I abandoned the philosophy. The story isn't unique - I did it through people listening to the ambivalences I felt about a lot that I saw and believed. I didn't do it because people like you belittled me, much as you may have thought you were doing me a service.
Illinois government is particularly bloated. We have almost 7000 units of government in IL. Far and away the most in the country. Texas is the next closest with 5147. Florida has 6 million more people than IL yet has only 1650 units of government. I'm not saying we should look to Florida as the perfect example, but surely some consolidation should be made and the resulting budget savings split between lowering taxes and social initiatives. A part of Elgin actually funds 16 different government entities!
You may have renounced Libertarianism but not your ego. Well, we’re either all allowed to grow or not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Renouncing the ego is tough. Hard to be a bodhisattva with kids. There's a reason holy people tend to abandon their families. Which begs the question as to whether or not holiness is much of a virtue at all.
Man, thank you for that! "Renounce" is such a funny word. It's like that priest that renounced having a family so he could molest little boys.
If it was just one, man, would that be better. Some of the most evil people I've met have been the most pious. In psychology they call it compensatory ethics or moral balancing. I wish the Catholic Church (well, at least the Roman Rite) would let priests get married and woman be priests, before or after throwing like 75% of the USCCB in prison.
Sorry I was on edibles when I wrote the original post. What I guess I was trying to say was that in the absence of a larger state/country government system like we have now smaller factions with more autonomy would pop up to at the very least provide basic stuff they all agree is necessary. At least that's what i'd hope. Imagine if the us/state governments were just there to provide the very basics and each individual city had more autonomy over it's own governance. Wouldn't that be better seeing how it's impossible to please everyone but, easier to please the people you actually know
You don’t have to apologize for being on edibles! Look at Georgia right now. The authority to run their own elections had been pulled decades ago because of civil rights violations from the “local authorities”. Fast forward to now and that authority was returned to the state by the supreme court. Decades after a pattern of civil rights violations, the same violations are returning. They shut down hundreds of polling places in black communities so, effectively, black people can’t vote in Georgia now. That is what you want? Right wing radio wants that. That’s their goal disguised as “FREEDOMZ!!!!”
No that doesn't sound like what I want. I guess the moral of all this bickering is that humans will find a way to ******** up everything. But how does Georgia being assholes make an entire philosophy wrong? I'm curious.
Which philosophy are we talking about again? Sorry I might be speaking out of my ass but, upon first glance at the Libertarian party website it seems grounded in common sense. Of course anything as the power to be corrupted. I just don't get how a statement like "i want to be left alone to my own devices to do whatever I want without the interference of the goverment as long as it's not hurting anyone else" leads to racist polling places in georgia?
Ok maybe you guys are right about Joe Rogan. This guy is obviously crazy but, he doesn't call him out on it and even seems to encourage the spread of more BS.
White fragility is real: 4 questions white people should ask themselves during discussions about race Are you a "fragile" white person? Here's how to tell—and what to do about it https://www.salon.com/2016/07/18/white_fragility_is_real_4_questions_white_people_should_ask_themselves_during_discussions_about_race/
it's pretty simple: 1. you do whatever you want 2. I get hurt 3. you say I didn't get hurt and keep doing whatever you want
4. A court hears evidence and testimony from all sides 5. Laws are passed banning previously deemed harmful behavior. Just to play devil's advocate
