Surprised that the coach switched everything up after the 7 points in 3 games. They actually created a lot of space in portions of the 1st half... more than normal. Selke gets the start a receives the anti-Sargent treatment... several chances in space... but he was marginal to down-right poor with them. Then when you add in that his offsides negated a penalty kick and the fact that he is just so darn slow I am left wondering why he was Bremen's big winter signing. I just don't see it. Sargent comes on and immediately there is no service or chances. It borders on the ridiculous. It is almost like the ball avoids him unless he runs around and forces his way into the play. Is it bad luck? Bad positioning on his part?... or just a poor scheme and cast of characters? Bittencourt has had a role in the last handful of goals but he seems to shoot before surveying the players in the box. Rashica just looks like a shell of his former self. The list goes on and on. At this point I am not just going to excuse everything away for Sargent. I am still on the fence as to whether he will be a good striker... but he certainly needs to get at least a few chances in a game and I now count this as three games in a row where there has not been a meaningful forward pass to him in the box. Not one. Just brutal.

They certainly looked a heck of a lot better when I bothered to pay attention last season. That said, I really only have bothered to watch if Sarge was playing and he didn't get enough time when I could watch to form a strong impression of the issues, and tuning in today after they were already down and chasing probably did not flatter them, but they've looked pretty uninspired when I've watched... I may be the cause...

If Kohfeldt needed to rotate folks so badly, then why not at least start with the players that have been getting results and make some earlier than normal subs? Maybe sub some defenders for those who are gassed? But nahhhh, just sub in more strikers.

He seems like a glorified high school coach at times.

i hope they stay up for Josh’s sake, but they are so hard to watch. As mentioned elsewhere, that Bittencourt move made me wretch. The epitome of a poorly cosched team. His momentum was moving perpendicular to the goal, he one touches a shot while twisting to just get the ball in the general direction of goal..and all this from 25 yards out. Shot was no where the target. Yes, he’s had two recent key goals, nice goals in fact. But he’s a soccer dunce. Like a high school player who gets lucky a couple times then that’s it: he’s shooting every damn time from within 35 yards.

You can’t coach every player’s move on the pitch. Some guys are just impulsive and dumb which should get them chewed out and time on the bench, But in heat of battle, they will do dumb s**t again. Surely we have all played with a Bittencourt at some time.

If you haven't it means you're the Bittencourt.

    4) They've lost key players for most/almost all of the season
Fullkrug ruptured his ACL after the 4th game and won't be back until August (and at what level, we don't know).
Bartels missed 14 games on the trot with knee surgery and has had trouble staying fit since returning.
Midfield utility sub Mowald had knee surgery after the first game and was done for the season
Sahin has been carrying a hip problem since late January
Pizzaro pulled a hamstring leading up to the restart

They didn't have much depth to begin with and not a lot of quality to that depth either, but losing those players would damage a lot of sides

    5) The need to accommodate Bittencourt has led to tactical switches that don't suit the players left
Last season Bremen alternated between a diamond 4-4-2 and an attacking 4-3-3 (mostly away) in 80% of their games, but this season they've been all over the place, with constant tinkering at the back as they try 3-5-2, 3-4-3, 3-1-4-2, 4-3-3 or 4-3-2-1 (the cynics might call it 4-something-something). The only constant is that Bittencourt starts, goes 90', plays AM throughout - and doesn't contribute much.

Too many American footy fans see the game through an English lens, where the head coach is called the manager because he makes the key decisions - including player recruitment. On the continent the Sporting director makes that decision. Bittencourt, who cost a pretty penny, may the FO's pet project, with Kohfledt instructed to play him.

Fullkrug is a new signing, so he's irrelevant in comparisons to last season.

Bartels played 21 minutes in the league last season. Again, irrelevant.

Sahin has 200 fewer minutes than last season.

Pizarro had 200 minutes before the restart, so who gives a shit?

Sure, but he played in the equivalent of fewer than 10 full matches last season. That's not enough to explain the team's massive drop in performance. Useful sub, maybe, not much more.

Bittencourt is 7th on the team in minutes played. They've played almost 10 full matches worth of minutes without him on the field. He also cost like, €7 million. That's half of Davy Klassen.

Also, anyone on here with a functioning brain cell knows the difference between how continental clubs and English clubs are run.

If you're going to come in here with some "Americans don't know FOOTBALL" asshole take on BigSoccer, at least get your facts straight. Otherwise, kindly ******** off.

That was post of the week right there. Outstanding. Also extra credit for using the right version of "you're".

Ha! Or, we are all a Bittencourt sometimes. I know I am. But I’m not a pro in the BL1.

edit: I see I’m way late and way less clever than other responses here.

I have no idea what you two are arguing about, but I agree with both of you!

Both the existing players and the coach are not playing or coaching to their potential. There is a good squad lurking somewhere on this roster, but the coach has not found it and the players don't seem overly eager to play with one another.

Klaasen, Eggs, Rashica, Sargent, twice bittencourt, and Yuya have either talent or workman like qualities that should combine well, but there is no connectivity to the passes, no 'relevos', and no clear picture as to how to play. Based on what I have seen. Rashica should be moved to ACM and 2Bittencourt moved up to #2 striker and josh remains the target man.

The wholesale switch midweek was either tactically mistaken or factually a mistake. Take your pick.

One could say that there was a third option, that he was trying to prevent injury by so many games in succession for some of the guys. Why were they the only two teams playing a mid-week game?

Werder have a lot of work to do though to beat the drop. They are worst on goal differential at -32. So they need to gain 4 points on Mainz, but there is a game against Mainz in the second to last round, so that one will be live or die I bet. Fun to have football back!

I do remember that giant storm coming thru and canceling games... but I think I heard them say it was due to scheduling issues with Europa or DFB-Pokal.

Yeah, bad results for them today with Dusseldorf coming back to get a point and Mainz winning. But I think the best thing for Sargent might be that Bremen goes down, and he gets sold to a different 1st Bundesliga team.
