I'm hearing BigEast-East is going to operate as: Georgetown, Prov,SJ,Uconn,SH,Nova. So West is:Marq,DeP,X,Creighton,Butler. Looks like a 'no-fly' league that's going to add half dozen or so regional games. Maybe the A-10 would be looking for some games but their rpi was horrible last season. Depending where you are, not that attractive, several teams a long ride south. I'd look to other places like greater Boston.
A Creighton road game (great stadium and crowd) and Butler home game (welcoming Paul Snape back to Ann Arbor for a weekend) would be great. I don’t have any inside knowledge but those games would be great for the Wolverine players and fans and likely would be an RPI boost.
This "regional" structure in conferences is a major talking point in WSOC too. I've heard it a lot from women's coaches.
Creighton is going to be hating life --- on the road. Traveling to Marquette is going to suck (not on plane) - Xavier won't be much better? I expect Creighton may do a home-and-home with Omaha. Drake, UMKC - maybe Denver, AF.... Chicago? Lot of time on the road.
Wright State University cuts three sports: softball, men’s and women’s tennis. https://wsuraiders.com/news/2020/6/3/general-wright-state-athletics-announces-program-changes.aspx It means that now they only support 11 sports and there might be consequences. See extract of the press release:- “NCAA Division I member institutions are required to sponsor at least seven sports for men and seven for women (or six for men and eight for women) with two team sports for each gender. Wright State has been in contact with the NCAA and will pursue a waiver to remain in compliance.”
Steve Goff tweeted a few days ago re modifications to Maryland's season: From @SashoCirovski , outlook for a fall @NCAASoccer season is looking brighter. However, due to cost-cutting & safety concerns, many longer trips to be canceled. #Terps' visit to Stanford and home match vs Portland are off. Big Ten decisions to come.
UCSB lost a season-opening road trip to Loyola and Northwestern, and will replace with Cal and USD. They also dropped a game at South Florida after the other school on that trip (SMU) dropped them. Marshall and Utah Valley have confirmed trips to SB. All scheduling news courtesy of Mark Patton and the Santa Barbara News-Press.
NJIT is leaving the ASUN for the America East, effective July 1. The travel makes so much more sense. Robert Morris is reportedly leaving the Northeast for the Horizon, also eff. July 1. Interestingly, the Colonials are one of just 12 schools to have posted their schedule already...but it looks like major revisions are in store.
In this article about Robert Morris moving to the Horizon, the article says that Fort Wayne (formerly IPFW) is moving from Summit to Horizon, too.
IU will be ending face-to-face classes and asking students to move out of U housing from Nov 20 to Feb 8. How will these sorts of semester accommodations affect sports schedules?
Thanksgiving is on 11/26. So, the Friday before is 11/20... Many classes are canceled that short week prior to Thanksgiving.
That's becoming a popular decision, and one that was always (in my knowledge) done when there were schools operating on quarters. Why February 8? Does IU do a J-term (or other similar term)? When I coached in college, I tried to get the three institutions I coached at to do the same and exit at Thanksgiving. There were so many kids who lived from far, it only made sense. Stupid schools thought it was wise to continue classes for 3-5 days then a few days of finals...then out for Christmas break. Idiots.
From what I gather, the idea is to eliminate the two holidays when students would go back home and presumably transmit or be infected w/ Covid-19. It certainly allows the U to more precisely determine who is sick. It's probably more like a guess as to when the second wave will hit. IU will be offering an additional interim "semester between those two dates, why I couldn't tell you. I certainly wouldn't want to teach a course during that time period.
They are known as Purdue Fort Wayne now...and yes, that had already been in the works. Chicago State just cut baseball, but says it's now starting up a men's soccer team effective this season. They won't play in the WAC until 2021, so either they'll be an Independent in 2020 or perhaps one of the five-school conferences (Missouri Valley or Sun Belt) will shelter them for a season.
Has Chicago State ever had men's soccer before? I was talking to someone when before this was announced and both of us were under the impression the institution had the sport previously. Anyone know more?
I would like to claim that I'm as smart as Sandon - but simply not true. According to this Depaul web site, Depaul played Chicago State in the 80's.
