It's odd. Working at the court I interact a lot with LEOs and most of them seem to me to be very nice people, I find them friendly, but there's something odd about them. They will defend their colleagues, even go to great lengths to try to defend the indefensible. They will tell you that their job is difficult, stressful, that they are risking their lives for us - all true, but of course it doesn't justify the racism, let alone the violence and use of deadly force that some of them exhibit. These are the people we are supposed to trust, because if we don't, society breaks down, but how can we possibly trust them? Really the biggest problem with law enforcement - I would say the biggest enemy of law enforcement - is the quiet majority of them who is not looking to be violent but when confronted with their colleagues who are, they either says nothing or attempt to excuse their rotten colleagues. Because ultimately, they seem to identify more with their rotten colleagues, than with the community that they are supposed to serve.

As a white latino immigrant into this country I am at a loss. I've stared at evil in the face before, coming from where I came from, but this particular manifestation of evil that we see here in the US is incomprehensible to me. I've always been someone who is optimistic about human nature, believes in getting along, in respecting everybody, understanding that we all come from different places, having faith in the brotherhood (& sisterhood) of humankind and all that, and now I see so much hatred, so much prejudice, so much violence, and I feel like I'm the crazy one here. Not the people who are burning things down, but me, the one who thinks we can get along, bring light to each other, find peace and a better world by exchanging ideas and perspectives, who thinks I can make a difference by being nice, when in reality it now looks to me like I'm standing outside with small lighter with a tiny feeble flame while facing a grade five hurricane. I've seen society crumble already, I've seen this movie before, but this particular version is different, and it scares me.

I just want to make sure people who didn't see it live understand what happened outside of the White House so he could have a photo op.

Most people don't want to snitch on colleagues. There is a bad stigma associated with it. It's the job of management to spot and correct behavior. When it comes to police it's dicey because like this case, isolating this type of behavior can save lives. At the same time, more than a typical business company, there is certainly more of a brotherhood feeling between cops just like military because of shared experience.

Honest question, does anyone who might vote for Trump or support him care what George Will has to say?

Good question. The kind of Trump voter I see on a regular basis doesn't know who George Will is, and, upon seeing a picture of him, would likely consider him a Liberal Pussy who exists only to be PWNED!

See, I read that completely differently. I'm guessing he's out there to find out how the whole thing was done, and who planned and authorized. I wouldn't assume he is complicit; there seem to be a lot of folks off their reservations lately, and it is his job to get his part back within bounds.

I could be 100% wrong-- but until it is proven that everyone in sight is complicit in this crap, I'm going to continue to expect responsible behavior to rear its head in expected places-- and he is one. And he is out where the action is, not staying hidden in some bunker.

Nope. George doesn't have an audience any more. But I like the man better for being a nobody than if he retained some semblance of popularity by standing by Mitch.

Heh. We live about 7 blocks east-ish of there. Another reason I miss the wreck that was RFK: I could walk to matches (although I usually had too much tailgating gear to actually do it).

There some older habitual Republican voters who have followed the party into the mirror house who have looked to Will for intellectual justification off and on-- and usually gotten it from him.

A blanket reversal like this will surely have a shock effect on them. This isn't a mere criticism of tactics-- this is complete repudiation of something he's spent a lifetime defending.

I've no idea how many there are still alive, but it is surely a percent or two. And a disproportionate number probably in Florida and Arizona...

I was debating if my next post in this thread would be more of the disastrous response by police around the country including Dallas and Louisville or a more traditional "today in racism posts."

Yeah, the hard liners aren't gonna waver from supporting Trump no matter what he does. But by the sweet grace of baby Jesus, there aren't enough of them to win an election on their own. They need to draw from middle.

He needs those dudes that in 2016 weren't too comfortable with his racism but voted for him anyway because maybe, just maybe, he'd "shake things up in Washington" by virtue of being an outsider. He also wasn't Hillary, who just about every white guy that's not a clear cut liberal absolutely loathes.

Biden needs to just not be an idiot and he can capitalize with this population. He's a trusted old white guy that'll get us back to normalcy, in a time where we desperately need it.

One of the few silver linings here. Trump needs a miracle at this point.

Madison County prosecutor: ‘We can only hope the deadly coronavirus strain spreads in riots’

Pamela Hancock, the second-term prosecutor of Madison County, defended herself Monday after posting and later deleting a Facebook comment in which she suggested “the deadly strain” of coronavirus should spread among rioters who are protesting inequity in the criminal justice system.

Hancock, who was first elected county prosecutor in 2015 and re-elected in 2019, wrote the post as a comment to another person’s post: “Does Covid spread during massive street riots or just in bars and restaurants? Asking for a friend.”
