The Centers for Disease Control in conjunction with the World Health Organization has updated its general guidelines to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus:
    1. Practice social distancing
    2. Keep hands clean
    3. Stay home when sick
    4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
    5. Clean and disinfect surfaces
    6. Watch this replay - - -

You all need to continue to be Responsible Global Citizens and adhere to directive 6). Identical video to the original but this version has one English?? Dude providing the play-by-play/commentary. The audio levels/mix of crowd noise is also different. Therefore, it’s like a Totally New Match. So much so, I think FIFA should present us with another Trophy. hehehehehehe

Do not, absolutely do NOT fall asleep on this Gem from the 2012 Olympics.

As if you ever need a reason to replay Heaven on Earth, watch it for the sheer uniqueness of the Match. I mean, how many times does the Greatest Team in the Universe trail by 2 Goals??? Don’t answer that because I’ve already done the math……..once every 48.2 years.

But alas - don’t fret, no need for concern, step back from the ledge, take a chill pill - - Spoiler Alert - - The Ladies in the White Hats prevail.

Sampson beat Ellis at the 2017 SBC. Later that year, Sampson went all the way into the Euro 2017 semis before being beaten by the Dutch. Reception was mixed as the English press felt like they were good enough to win the championship.

Few months later, one of the players not picked for the Euro squad, claimed Sampson swore racial epitaths at her, but other black English players backed Sampson. Further investigations by the FA found that there were rumours that Sampsonmight of slept with a teen player when we was a club coach & might have an relationship with NT captain Steph Houghton(even though their both married to other spouces). But the FA concluded that it didn't have substancial evidence to any of the claims. Still, all the unwanted controversy was good enough to get him fired

years later, he's coaching at a lower men's league, but again, a player brought up in the media that he was being racially mistreaded

Yes, I was there. I remember so much bad luck happening while I was there like my credit card stopped working, my phone decided to lose half of its battery life in 10 minutes and I had all my e-ticket information on there, the seat that I got for myself was used by a family and for the first time I had to call security to get these guys out of there. There was a huge delay in getting back to the Gold Line because everyone took the shuttle to get to the Rose Bowl(including myself so I was stuck waiting in long line to get back on the shuttle) Then I missed the gold line I needed to get so I had to spend more money getting an uber/lyft back home. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, it was probably the best, most energetic live match experience I ever had and once the sun went down, the weather was this perfect California evening weather. I think once again, the 99ers were honored and I always seem to tear up.

Oh yeah, and I met this woman in her late 30s that was a super fan of Mia Hamm(we decided to not go in the super long line where she was signing autographs and go for the super long line where you could see the 2019 Womens World Cup along with the 2015 cup(which I remember seeing for the first time 4 years ago), and the 99 cup and 91 cup.

I'm part of the LAFC community so I'll probably find an opportunity to ask for Mia's autograph someday in the future.

There are advantages to being pushed to travel all over the world and being allowed to indulge oneself when not actually being on duty. That advantage is you can go places just because you are curious. I was traveling on a French passport and in S.E. Asia when an assignment ended in late 1991. Since I was traveling on that French passport I had little trouble getting into China to see the Start of the WWC there. (I doubt if my American passport would have worked at that time) I saw the opening round of group B but I was called home before any further play so all I saw was US vs Sweden. (I must admit I had some problems with language there as my Chinese (both Mandarin and Cantonese) was and is non-existent and there were very few people there spoke either English or any of the few other languages I was conversant in. But I muddled through and after the match I managed to get a few of the ladies to sign photographs I had taken with an instant camera. Mia Hamm was one. I also was near the goal when she scored her first WWC goal in that match. The most amazing thing about that goal was that everybody else on the team seemed happier that she did. Hamm just seemed to be saying, "what's the big deal? Isn't that what I'm supposed to do."

I still have the photo of her and you can still mostly make it out and read the signature. I had it sealed in plastic and it is holding up pretty well. I am leaving it to one of my granddaughters or, maybe to a great granddaughter if I live long enough for my granddaughters to grow up and have kids of their own. That is about the only thing of value I own. At least I "think" it will have value because of when and where it was taken and the signature. (BTW: I was taking pictures at the time she scored but the camera was very slow and I took one right before the goal and I did not even get the celebration of the goal.)

Before anyone asks I will NOT sell that picture and I did not preserve many others I took. Traveling as I did at the time made keeping things like pictures hard so I picked only three to have sealed and had a photo shop in Japan seal them in plastic as it was quite an expensive practice there at that time. I gave the other two (One of Akers and one of Ingrid Johansson [At least one Swede was irresistible] ) to a friend in Germany when I was next there in early 1993.

My memory of that match is a little fuzzy because of all the travel and the pressures of my assignments but I actually remember getting the autographs quite clearly. (I think I violated some rule or other but the ladies were quite gracious)

Not really. It is rather amazing what it takes for certain agencies of the government to allow their former employees to discuss their travels even after the actual classification has been lifted. Only recently has the gag order been lifted so I can talk about much of where I went during the time from when I left the service to mid 1994.

Now that I have been mysterious enough I can say that in that time I spent some time in over 25 countries n some of the worst areas of the world and managed to attend some interesting events.

My life was interesting during that time in all the various meanings of the word "interesting."

In my free time I am amazed how much involved "soccer" in some ways and mostly at the time it happened I had no idea of the importance or historical value of some of the stuff I witnessed. The problem for me during that time was that I rarely was able to see or attend the entirety of any event that I was at. My bosses seemed to have no compassion for those of us they kept moving around the world. ( No! it was not "James Bond" type of stuff. Mostly I just watched, listened and talked to people. I did not even travel armed most of the time and never ever did I meet a "Xenia Onatopp" type person although I did keep looking for one. )

Looking back I find it rather amazing how lucky I was in that my free time coincided with so much of the early development of the current world of women's soccer.

Mostly that trip to see one WWC match in 1991 allowed me to see just how special that group of young women were (and are) and I kind of followed them when I could from then on and when I retired I even got my coaching license and coached mostly girl's soccer for about 20 years.

In some ways I find it really amazing that some of the worst things in my life led to some of the best things.

Now that I can talk about much of what went on during that time I find I talk almost too much. Sorry for rambling in this thread about so much that is really not related to the thread's title.

Completely off-topic, FoF, my wife had a good friend, a generation older which means really old -- a college fellow alumna. When asked how she met her husband, she said, "I met him in spy school." It was true. OSS.

My job really was not usually "spy stuff." What I did was go into mostly third world countries that I had some familiarity with the language or some language that was regularly used there and get the "sense" of what the general population and/or the military was feeling. I only very rarely even had any part of the government's operation as my assignment.

Mostly I just played the roll of an alienated disenchanted American that simply had a bit of money and was willing to spend it on partying. I spent most of my time with whatever passed for the middle class in whatever country I was in just drinking and partying and listening to what they were saying about their government and the conditions they lived under. (OK so it wasn't all bad.) This was easy information to get in countries that were mostly friendly to the west but countries like post war Vietnam and Laos and such could get dangerous for the people I talked to if they voiced and dissatisfaction with their Government. And then there were many countries that were simply mostly lawless and those were the ones that were actually dangerous for everybody. In those I went armed, just like everybody else, and I never carried much cash.

While I did have some exciting assignments, mostly it was just me talking and listening and trying to be friendly.

What I found out was that mostly everywhere regardless of politics or ethnicity or economic status once people became convinced that I was of no threat they proved to be just people. People in the slums of Nigeria are really no different than most people in the average US city. Also if you can talk soccer most people worldwide speak that language very well. In my travels the only places I felt truly uncomfortable were places where the US had a large influence. It seems the "Ugly American" image of people from the US is rather wide spread where we have been. Mostly in those countries I told folks I was Canadian and that eased tensions quite a bit. But it was hard to maintain that image because I am not naturally that polite.:);)

The two worst presidents I experienced were Nixon and Reagan. Then there were the somewhat do nothing presidents like Ford and Carter. Those last two did little wrong of course they did little right.

BTW: I was not part of the planing or action of the abortive raid into Iran but I had associates that were. I know everyone blames Carter for that but the plan was good but the reliability of the helicopters used was not correctly reported by the lying manufacturers. The raid should have been an overwhelming success but everyone involved was lied to and the helicopters could not stand the heat and sand. Gee, heat and sand in Iran. Who would have thought. We were just luck our withdrawal plan was excellent or we could have lost all or a large part of our troops involved.

I actually liked working under Nixon. His decisions might have been questionable but you always knew who was in charge and you knew he knew and understood EVERYTHING that went on in his government. It was the Reagan administration that really made me question what I was doing. That clown never knew anything about what was going on but he insisted on controlling the foreign affairs of the US so things often went hideously wrong.

I think that if I were still active I would resign because of our current CiC (Clown in Charge) I do not think I could tolerate his God awful policies. At least five of the people I helped train have resigned and I have heard reports that we have lost over 50% of the best of the people that do the actual work overseas.

    But enough of that.

I decided to watch a replay of the WWC final and my main take away was that the US was a LOT better than the Dutch and the Dutch played one of the dirtiest matches I have ever seen at a WWC and the referee let them get away with most of their dirty play.

Wow thank you for sharing! As a single person for quite some time, I've always daydreamed about jobs where I just traveled all over the place and experienced different cultures and met people I wouldn't have otherwise met. Of course now, that's not really an option and I have no idea if it will ever be in the near future.

I could have theoretically gone to the WWC Final in 99' at the Rose Bowl as I was living in Los Angeles(still do). It was Summertime in 1999, I was an only child that was besties with a neighborhood boy(same age as Messi) whose family was from Argentina and lived and breathed soccer. His dad would make him practice every day with mostly technical stuff with the ball since there was no large field and his mother would take him to his club soccer practice. He had games on the weekends and I used to wait for him on my bicycle to return home so I could play with him. I watched with curiosity and wanted to join in many times. In the course of four years that I knew Mauricio, he introduced me to street soccer, often playing one on one with me on the streets or a neighbors front lawn(back when people weren't so offended by kids playing on their lawn) and using cones, trash cans, rocks, pebbles, anything as "goal posts". He liked to teach me "fancy moves"(I don't know the official names of these movements) like doing a 360 turn while dribbling or lifting the ball over the defender and silly things like kicking the ball up without letting it touch the ground. Unfortunately, he knew nothing about the USWNT and of course in retrospect, I couldn't expect him to since he mainly watched soccer leagues from Latin America with his papa(his dad was a big time Maradona fan before Argentina started worshipping Messi) and therefore, despite the commercials I would occasionally see featuring Mia Hamm and the ladies involving teeth fillings, I knew nothing else about the USWNT nor US Soccer in general despite the men's world cup being in the US in 1994. My dad knew nothing about soccer despite being a jock in high school(football, basketball and baseball) and tended to regard it as something Mexicans love and we had one television and no internet(we didn't have a lot of money) so the WWC 99' almost just nearly passed me without me even realizing it existed.

But suddenly one day, I was bored and Mauricio was unavailable to play with that day, so I was super grumpy and bored and hot and decided to plop on the couch in the living room in front of the tv and sulk about not having anyone to play with. My dad had ABC channel 7 on and I noticed a soccer match on television. I was completely baffled and asked my dad, "WAIT, what is this?" He told me, "oh it's a women's soccer tournament or something..." I was like ohhhhh, that's cool! How did I not know about this?" I instantly recognized Mia Hamm from the commercials and decided I had nothing better to do than watch it. It just so happened that was the 1999 FINAL and it was at the ROSE BOWL. I was like.... "wait, so it's happening live... in Los Angeles, right this minute??" My dad goes, "guess so..."

So I believe I caught the game kinda in the middle, around the 50-60th minute which is when it started to get really tense. As a result, this match caught me like a fish on a hook and I watched the entire game(first women's soccer game) with utter fascination and excitement with my dad. Needless to say, the Chastain PK left a very strong fresh imprinting on my brain that never went away, and I was blown away and became an instant fan overnight. Of course, I also started dreaming about being Brandi the rest of the Summer and declared to my parents I want to be a professional soccer player similarly to when I watched the Magnificent 7 gymnastics squad get the Gold Medal in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics, I declared to my parents I wanted to be a professional gymnast like Dominique Moceanu. My parents, "Okay, that's nice, now take out the trash...."

The whole story is happenstance because I discovered that game by accident, and if Mauricio had been available to play with, I would have ironically played soccer with him totally oblivious to what was going on simultaneously in women's soccer Eventually, I would have discovered the USWNT because my interest in soccer would have crossed paths in the future years. I'm just lucky I happened to discover them during one of the most iconic moments in US soccer history.

It does pain me that I didn't discover them earlier because I would have had an opportunity to see them live at the Rose Bowl with Meghan Rapinoe somewhere in the stands. I guess either way, I did see them "live" just on television...

When I FINALLY went to the Rose Bowl(first time in my life even though I'm a UCLA alumni) during their first victory tour match since winning the 2019 WWC, I felt like I was getting a "second chance" and imagining myself seeing them for the first time like how it was in 1999 and searching for that experience. I felt like a little kid again, and that's why when Mia Hamm was there, it made me feel like I was going through this major nostalgia trip or I'm was traveling back in time. The stadium wasn't full like it was in 1999(only 36,000 attended) but it didn't matter to me, I got a wonderful Summer evening match with fireworks, a 99' halftime show, and a bunch of other fun goodies like seeing the trophies(after having to stand in line for an hour in 90 degree weather WORTH IT)

The funny thing was how many little girls were standing in line shouting "MIA MIA MIA!" I stood there thinking, "how in the world do these girls even know who Mia Hamm is? They probably weren't even born when she was playing" But Mia Hamm is of course a legend, and probably going to always be known just like Pele is an icon even though not many people were alive when he was playing.

Rereading what I wrote I see that I did make my travels seem more romantic than it really was. Mostly it was tedious and boring. It was the interludes between assignments that was really what I would call exciting.

The other disadvantage was that except for some people within the community I was unable to develop much in the way of long term relationships.

There are times when I miss the travel and even the periods of excitement but mostly I wish I had traveled by choice and could have decided on my own where to go and when to leave.

But I did learn a LOT about people and I can speak three languages pretty well and get by in three or four more. That means I can watch many soccer matches with confidence that I will understand most of what is said. In languages I am comfortable with I have the most problem with matches from Mexico. Their announcers often get excited and start spewing out Spanish much faster than my old brain can follow.

With my time in the military and my subsequent work for many years I missed a lot of the developments here in the US. Every time I came home I had to readjust to some huge changes.

I would not wish my travels on anyone but I would not have missed them for anything. How's that for a conflicted viewpoint?

BTW: While there was little of real "spy stuff" in my travels there were times that it was more like combat than anything else. I can tell you that being shot at or hunted through a city or jungle is not fun at all.
