A simpler point overlooked is that day in day out the police are the ones that collect the evidence for the cases prosecutors prosecute so the police and the prosecutors are dependent on each other. It is no surprise that prosecutors are reluctant to prosecute police.
    I don't see a simple solution.

Basically, Sherman Circle has been on maps since at least his death in 1891, but being way out there (far away from the capital) would have been "insulting" and his supporters put the impressive statue near the Treasury at 15th and E, dedicated in 1903.

It would take an act of Congress to move it.

I've spend the better part of this day to read through the last 30-40 pages of this thread. I read this forum often but don't post much anymore. (Frankly I usually can't keep up with the fast paced discussions.) Nevertheless I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for finding all this information and aggregating it here.
    Keep up the good work!

Not to decenter anything from the current protests, but for @Robert Borden talking about Canada's reconciliation and reparations

The fact that a company can get away with putting their name on this, or the bumper stickers implying the O&G company was conducting intercourse with a female that appeared to be Greta Thunberg, kind of shows that at the end of the day, in both the US & Canada - as long as my industry isn't affected, we really don't care about racism (or climate change or misogyny).

Murder by Cop, that's OK, but someone's looting the Target?

Yeah, America is well beyond "Reparations"

Have you guys watched Terrence Floyd (George's brother) at the impromptu memorial for his brother in Mineapolis? He was understandably emotional but also remarkably forceful. He called for peaceful demonstrations, need for Justice to be fully done and more importantly to vote as the main avenue to address meaningful changes. Very good.

Sherman may not have a Metro station named after him (like General McPherson and Admirals Farragut and Dupont) but his statue is on the route of the inaugural parade.

There was a video a few years back of a Black guy being harassed (arrested?) by a White police officer. Apparently, the two had some history. The Black guy's friend started filming the encounter (I forget how it started, but it was something like the Black guys simply walking out of a convenience store) and the police partner started going after him telling the friend to stop recording of he would be arrested. I posted this on Facebook and after a couple of back and forths with a former classmate who is now LAPD or LA Sheriffs or something like that, I said that not all police are bad, but it would be better to improve all officers with better training in areas like de-escelation, improved psychological understanding, and other things. His response was that he had enough training to do his job. I countered that it is always better to continually improve. He responded that it wasn't needed.

The above seems to be the mentality of so many police.

As a side note, the original guy was never arrested so nothing could be used as actual data, but this was a pattern of harassment, according to the guy who filmed the clip. SOP by police.

THIS.... I have seen this all over the internet, but is it true? /Does anybody here know?

I also wonder why authorities do not have fire trucks parked and hooked up near important govt buildings. Fire hoses are a mostly non-lethal crowd dispersal method. Seems as if they could serve as a last line of defense that could protect public buildings without exacerbating the problem.

If all the violence is being perpetrated by instigators then we really are in a helluva lot of trouble. The violence is pretty much coast to coast and that is a crap ton of instigators. I don't know if it possible but it would be really cool if the legit protesters policed those who were there to cause violence and chaos. If nothing else get pictures and witnesses to the violence and they can be later charged.

The chickens really are coming home to roost. The whole distrust of govt, distrust of police, distrust of media, all our institutions are broken. I think this goes much deeper than Trump caused all this, (he damned sure exacerbated it, but he isn't really responsible for all the decades that came before him and he does symbolize a lot of what is wrong)

Anybody would be an improvement, but I do not take much hope that Biden is actually going to make it much better. I think we need inspirational leadership, Biden and inspiration are not often mentioned in the same sentence.

So does anybody here have any solutions to the underlying problems? I think ending the war on drugs would be a very good place to start. Then spend (ideally that and a some more) but realistically spend at least some of that savings on services designed to treat drug problems as opposed to punishing them. The war on drugs led to the militarization of the police and that has facilitated some of the problems. If we end the "war" on drugs the militarization of the police won't be necessary.

I don't recall Trump even explaining exactly what MAGA meant. I'm sure the fake story would be the time before Obama fully ruined America. But it really goes back to his idyllic 50s Whitelandian childhood in Queens.

I would like to point out this about Memphis. Back in 2008/2010, there were huge cuts which needed to be made across the board in Memphis. The police were part of that, but the police union made all kinds of threats about not policing and slow response times, etc, so they were untouched. So, in response, the city had to make cuts to other departments, like the fire department and education.

Police Unions grip on cities and their force will be one of the main nuts to crack for real reform to be implemented. Most of them are simply toxic and run by facists and racists.

Take Police forces out of Schools - Stop the school to prison pipeline
Take away the "I was in fear of my life" defense near automatic out for police.
Bodycams & voice recording are always "ON".
Prosecuting officers for violent conduct, profiling, harassment for non-crimes
Issue fines on people who call police to report non-criminal activity to have the police investigate / harass people who are simply exercising the their same rights that Whitelandians get to

    Post 1

This is from my ex. It is an email/statement from UC Irvine. I can't find it posted publicly, so I don't have a link.

"We are in this together" has become a common phrase as we confront this unprecedented pandemic. The sentiment captures the genuine appreciation for the courage of first responders and essential workers whom we rely on to keep our communities running. It also acknowledges the hard realities of sickness, death and the growing economic damage that individuals, families and communities are experiencing.

The persistence of anti-Black racism belies this sentiment. Just this week in New York City, Amy Cooper, a white woman, falsely reported to the police that Christian Cooper, a Black man, was threatening her in Central Park. On Monday, George Floyd, a Black man, died in the custody of Minneapolis police. In February, Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man, was killed while jogging in Glynn County Georgia.

None of these examples of racism were caused by COVID-19, but they do pose the question “Are we really in this together?” Drawing on the well-established stereotype of the dangerous Black male, Amy Cooper attempted to use the police to intimidate Christian Cooper even though it was she who was not following the law. This encounter reminded me of the lecture of Dr. Yusef Salaam, one of the Exonerated Five. Dr. Salaam was one of five young men of color who were wrongfully arrested by the police, charged by the District Attorney and subsequently convicted by a jury of participating in the sexual assault of a white jogger in Central Park in 1989. Christian Cooper’s only presumption of innocence was the fact that he recorded his encounter.

The recordings associated with the deaths of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery documented their terrifying final moments of life as Black men in the United States. The recordings did not save them. At most, they reveal the lethality of anti-Black stereotypes. George Floyd plaintively requested air and water while one Minneapolis Police Officer crushed his windpipe and others looked on. The violent denial of even these basic conditions of life recalled the 2014 death of Eric Garner in Staten Island as the result of a chokehold by a New York police officer. In a neighborhood in Georgia, the death of Ahmaud Arbery by individuals who took the law into their own hands calls to mind Trayvon Martin. While visiting his relatives in Sanford, Florida in February 2012, George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin to death citing self-defense. Trayvon was unarmed. So was Ahmaud.

These recent incidents of anti-Black racism add to the existing burden of fear. As UCI Professor of Sociology Sabrina Strings noted in a recent essay in The New York Times, the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 related sickness and death on Black communities highlights the long-term effects of structural racism in the nation’s health care system, ranging from access and treatment to outcomes. Still, it is important to note that the novel coronavirus did not discriminate against Christian Cooper nor kill George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, but it was ordinary people who decided that their lives did not matter.

These are indeed costly lessons at the expense of Black people in the United States. They require each of us to confront anti-Black racism and embrace inclusive excellence. These are inter-related choices. It is not enough to expect equity for yourself without advocating for others. It is not enough to support diversity without learning about the communities that we serve. It is not enough to practice inclusion and resist building bridges of dialogue. And it is not enough to honor free speech without using it to defend inclusive excellence for all.

This is from my cousin, the State Representative in the Eau Claire area of WI

I just watched a video of four white teenagers from Eau Claire who were caught looting a liquor store in Minneapolis. I’m not posting the video because I don’t have proof they are from Eau Claire and I don't want to see any vigilante justice happen.

These kids were caught by a neighborhood watch group and were told to go home. I’m disgusted and appalled this is happening in the Twin Cities. There are people who are marching for their lives right now and there are opportunistic people taking advantage of the situation because they can. Their privilege allows them to go into this community and drive out alive. These kids were lucky that the people looking to cause problems didn’t catch them. They may not have lived to see the morning if that happened.

If you are going to the Cities, it better be to help our brothers and sisters who are hurting. Do better! Be better! Have this be a moment in time you can look back on and be proud of how you stood with others not got away with something.

She is typically a bit more mid-western than that.
