I guess some Latino gangs are helping the police protect Latino business.

Does anyone have a good theory why THIS killing has led to THIS reaction? Is it because people are on edge and let down by their govt regarding COVID? Is it that this killing is the worst one? Is it this one more or less on the heels of Aubry and Breonna?

It's just remarkable that the reaction is so vast THIS time, given that the cop in question has already been arrested.

Just got home from Savannah, the fiancé and I met up with some of my brothers from the VA and their families for a rally organized my their Mayor Van Johnson. What an amazing albeit emotional gathering. Nobody acting stupid, locals policing their own and LEO behaving with humility.

If you are not familiar with Van Johnson then he’s worth learning about. Hope is thin but it is there.

  7. They probably extort those businesses. If burnt down not much to extort anymore.

It's all that, but the image of the cop with his knee on the neck of Mr Floyd, his hands at his side and that expression of of indifference is about as powerful an image as you will see. How can one not be moved in a deep way by that.

Some people are saying that there are probably racial related.

There is some beef among Latino gangs and black gangs.

I think it's related to Covid but not that rationally. Everybody is pent up and on edge from months of sheltering in place, losing their jobs, being broke, etc. Basically the whole thing has got everybody wound so tightly that when the explosion finally came, it came big.

Though I think the presence of subversive elements that helped the protests turn into riots were a huge part of it too, and a much more calculated one. And after that happened I imagine a lot of the subsequent looting has been a lot more opportunistic than anything else (and also related to the fact that so many are unemployed and/or broke).

Oh, and the fact that so many police departments are pretty much proving the point that they're full of violent, out of control individuals has really caused this to escalate to another level. Footage of them attacking innocent bystanders and members of the media has likely swelled the ranks of the protests significantly.

At least the business owners are finally getting something back for all the "protection" money that they paid.

??? I hope you're not saying MJ and Ali are of the same generation...MJ was born (I think) the year before Ali won the heavyweight championship.

This is from my daughter, of whom I am proud:

I was in downtown Chicago today for a peaceful protest against racism in America. I was downtown today marching in solidarity and showing up, even in the middle of the pandemic, all of us wearing face masks while people passed out hand sanitizer, because this is important enough to me to make the sacrifice, given my own circumstances surrounding the pandemic. I was downtown today when we all kneeled for 9 minutes in honor. I was downtown today while people were kind to one another and joined voices to affirm “Black Lives Matter.”

I was downtown today when tensions started rising on all sides. I was downtown today when all of the bridges leading out of the loop were shut down. I was downtown when CTA was shut down. I was downtown today and witnessed the herd mentality of mass panic–it only takes one person–one person in a crowd of thousands–to start running and people will run because they don’t know where the danger is–and that’s how things turn from peaceful to riots–it only takes one restless individual, without thought to the overall message we are trying to send, to shift the mood.

I was walking to my friends’ car when I saw the waves of police and state troopers pouring in. I made it home before the curfew was issued for 9pm. I was safe on my couch when I knew that with public transportation down and roads out of the loop (all but one bridge) being closed- this was something planned and executed WITHOUT the people of Chicago’s best interests at heart.

This day is over but the fight against racism isn’t. This was one day I experienced but this is a lifetime and an unfortunate reality for people of color. This day was not about me (despite my use of “I”s above) but the things I do and say can make a difference. This is not my fight which is EXACTLY why I have to do my part to fight it. Do not stay silent. Do not let this be our future. I am not against police but I cannot be silent about police brutality. I do not condone rioting but I cannot let the protesting fall on the shoulders of those who have suffered enough. I am not of the belief that any human being is superior and therefore I cannot sit by and ignore the blatant racism in America. It’s up to us now, the usually white and usually silent onlookers, to do something with our privilege.

Not as much as now, but then again, social media wasn't what it is today. I do recall back in the 90s basketball player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf suspended for refusing to stand for the National Anthem, but it didn't quite hit the news with the same impact that Kaepernick's protest did this decade.

Of course not. But it's the clearest example of an outspoken black athlete unless I guess you go even further back ... that I can think off anyways.

It looks like at least 2 of the officers who attacked a Morehouse man and a Spelman College woman in their car have been fired. Here's more raw video of the event, but I think this tweet gets it right.
