Bremen's start to the season was deluge of misfortune (injuries). Eggestein has not been as sharp this season as last. Vogt's played the bottom of the diamond midfield which I believe is a first altho his history is short since he arrived in Jan transfer window (to staunch bleeding goals) and promptly got injured.

The skinny diamond gave the mids more chances to get into a dogfight versus the old 433 which spread things out and exposed deficiencies at the 6.

6'4" Vogt helps a lot with set plays, defensively.

Cool. You for sure have watched more of this Bremen midfield than I have. I thought they've looked pretty poor to my eye and results seem to suggest they aren't awesome, but I'm happy to agree to disagree as I don't have much of a dog in this fight. Perhaps the results are overly harsh, but at this point, poor as they are, I'd take Schalke's energetic midfield over Bremen's if I were choosing my schoolyard team.

Not just black dudes. There's plenty of them in London, Amsterdam, etc. but you can't get the crowds you're seeing without plenty of the whites, browns, yellows and mixed showing up as well.

Though not as badly hit as the US, the UK and Brazil (isn't there a common thread there??) Holland is one of the continental countries more badly hit by COVID-19, and being in that crowd is NOT what the doctor ordered. It's just that the risk is high and the urgency of doing something, anything, to say "Hell, no!" is higher. Way, way higher.

They will. They have been, in fact.

Part of the problem is that, when I was there in the late 90s many, many Dutch were baffled by the idea that he could be seen as an aspect of racism and "white supremacy". The character has been around for over a century, as an integral part of a kids' Christmas ritual that was made much more child-oriented by the introduction of the Zwarte Piet character, in a country that was +95% white until the mid-70s. People don't change things like that overnight - "what?!?! My beloved, childhood memory is racist?! So, my parents and teachers who worked so hard to make those experiences so memorable were racists?!?! Piss off!!"

But his introduction in the later 1800s was a change, and new changes like making the hair straight and/or removing the red lipstick, or putting white kids with black streaks on their faces to play up the idea that he's black because he's a chimney sweep are part of changes to cultural rituals. Slow, but they'll get there in the end.

yeah but I refer to a brotherhood of Black men of sorts as racism is global and Blacks face it elsewhere though for example when traveling abroad I have a protection of sort as an American whereas my African brothers would not.

50/50. They now have him in multiple colors. I have a Dutch sister and i discussed with her mother-in-law and it was clear while being a lovely woman, immigrants shouldn't critique something so dear to Dutchies.

Eintracht Frankfurt's two Austrian defenders have more goals this season than all of Schalke's forwards combined.

Will there be a section on cognitive dissonance? Dutch arguments about why Zwarte Piet are the most ridiculous efforts in verbal gymnastics I’ve ever heard, and I work in DC.

McKennie was out of the squad for today's 1-1 draw with Union Berlin due to yellow card accumulation.

Schalke's now 10th, 7 points away from Europe and 10 points from the relegation playoff with 4 games to go.

They host Bayer Leverkusen in their next match on Sunday the 14th.

    He's very well liked. See here, for example;

    https://www.schalker-block5.de/index.php?thread/53941-weston-mckennie/&pageNo=47

"McKennie did more for our 'offensive' in the second half of the season than Serdar (who of course also missed a few games) and Harit together. Nearly all of the few big chances that we had from the cup game against Bayern to the Bremen game were either initiated or completed by him."

PS: Dave is the one in hot water.

For better or worse, with a run like the one Schalke 04 has been in, it is as it should be. He's either not getting the boys to play well, or his tactics are not right, or a combination of both. In any event, the guy is not succeeding and he should be in hot water. Sitting 10th at this point in the season is not Schalke 04's definition of success I would imagine. A lot of things would have to go very badly for them to be threatened with relegation so I don't see that being a possibility, but him being out on his ear at the end of this if things don't turn around is a much more likely possibility.

Yea I don’t think they’ll fire the coach this year. Too much happened it would be too hard to replace. It would be very very unlikely they get relegated. But if they get close and this form stays he’s likely fired end of year.
