Or forgetting they already failed and cycling back to them. I seem to recall Beasley first being tried at left back during the 2006 cycle when Arena was trying to fit all of Convey, Lewis, and Beasley into the lineup.

And it might have been center back Gibbs at left back over Lewis/Bocanegra in 2006 were in not for injury.

    -----Gibbs--Boca---Gooch---Cherundolo---- would've made for a nice backline.

Paul Tenario did an interview with Gregg Berhalter, and then Tweeted that this is what he felt the lineup was after the interview (though they don't specifically talk lineups in the interview)

    Steffen

    Cannon - Long - Brooks - Dest

    Adams - Yueill - McKennie

    Reyna - Altidore - Pulisic

Here's the interview (it requires a subscription)

I largely like that lineup. I'm a bit wary of kicking Jordan Morris to the bench, because from a purely USMNT perspective, he was our best player in 2019.

That said it's going to be hard to argue with starting Reyna if he keeps getting minutes at Dortmund, and Morris's speed could be valuable off the bench

Best lineup that you can use especially during World Cup qualifying for 2022

Reyna in front of adams and McKennie, Morris to the wing, flip Jozy for Sargent, and that's a decent squad.

I said it in another thread, but maybe someone can make sense of it here...why on earth do you need a midfielder behind two of our best players/midfielders who are excellent defensively? All for a long diagonal? Adams and McKennie will do all the defensive work you need, put someone IN FRONT of them, not behind!

I like that lineup too. I like Yedlin better than many here (mainly because I don’t think he sucks any more defensively), but he is getting older and we need to get the young guys experience. Maybe Adams & McKennie as CMs in front of the back line. Push Yuell (or whoever you like there) up closer to your wings, and play Altidore (or Sargent) up top. Not sure Reyna is better than Morris yet, but he probably will be. I like that there are so many Europeans in this; I hope his speculation right. I also like Weah and Holmes as attacking reserves.

Dest's defense at LB wasn't good the last time he played there. Maybe he will improve. Maybe not. He has next to no competitive experience there club level.

Yueill isn't even killing it at MLS level.

McKennie and Adams. Where's the creativity going to come from in midfield?

Altidore. Is 30. Is injury prone. Has a desultory competitive international record against decent teams.

Yeah, this would seem like something I could really get on board with. Morris has earned a shot at a starting spot in my mind and we desperately need some creativity in the AM. I would not be at all surprised if Reyna ends up a fixture there sooner or later anyways. Seems like most want to see the pairing of Adams and WM in the 6 and 8 spot also, I know I'd certainly like to see it tried.

    Here's a thought exercise:

We got spanked 3-0 with this lineup (putting aside Gregg's stupid build-out-of-the-back-at-all-costs strategy):

3 Attackers: = Pulisic, Boyd (Morris, 58’), Zardes (Sargent, 67)
3 midfielders: McKennie, Trapp (Lletget, 77), Morales (Yueill, 90)
4 defenders: Dest (Lovitz, 67), Zimmerman (Robinson, 58), Long, Cannon
    Steffen

    Where we have upgrades:

    Adams for Trapp is huge
    Reyna for Zardes is huge
    Brooks for Zimmerman is meaningful
Morris for Boyd is meaningful (Boyd was playing much better back then)

Is this enough (plus none of Berhalter's idiotic BOOTB strategy) to offset a net 3 goals?

Note: I wouldn't start Morales (I'd play a 523, swap Alfredo for a CB and switch Cannon for ARobinson) but if we're playing a 433 he's better than Yueill, Roldan, and likely Pomykal.

what is it with us fans that we continue to believe where guys play with us youth teams is their "true" position rather than where their club teams are play them?

i could understand more with pulisic and weah. bringing in very young attacking prospects at the wing makes sense- limits the liability of their inexperience, gives them more time/room etc. i didnt feel strongly about pulisic pre-dortmund (position-wise), but he clearly thrives in that space on the wing. hence my complete dedication to the fact that he is best used as a winger.

i thought/think weahs position (striker/winger) would be dictated by how his body fills out/develops, but he played off the cf in his 5 or 6 matches with little (after playing on the wing with psg) so im not set one way or the other. well, other than hoping his injuries are a coincidence rather than a trend.

but dortmund play reyna centrally. of his, what, 10 appearances two were clearly wide the rest have been central. he drifts out to find space at times but hes one of the midfield 3- not a winger.

look, any of these guys could play about 6 positions/roles better than most of the pool taking on guatemala- but its a good idea to sit our (barely arguably) most productive player last year?

i dont get it at all. is it grossly overestimating us soccer vs these clubs coaching-wise? is it an american soccer inferiority complex- that jordan morris (who no one argues is a world beater but IS a top tier concacaf player) from lowly mls is not only expendable but a problem we have to solve asap? are our brains warped trying to reconcile reality with what whatever genius ideas berhalter comes up with/will allow?

can we just PRETEND to play to our strengths? 3 central mids? adams, mckennie, reyna. done. how is that even hard? youd rather have jackson yuell (or god forbid a "reinvigorated" bradley) than one of the very, VERY few consistent, productive players we dont have worry about?

Is there a sports discussion board anywhere in which fewer that 1/3 of the participants routinely ascribe some form of ignorance or delusion or ill will to those with whom they disagree? I bet not,

Even if USA don't qualify for Qatar 2022, which I doubt because let's face it from CONCACAF and seeing their talent there is no reason for them not to be in Qatar but let's say they miss out again, 2026 USA are one of the 3 co hosts which means USA by then their team will be much more mature especially playing on home soil in their own backyard. But USA will be in Qatar anyway so really is there any need to discuss this.

Look at that central defensive triangle:

    Brooks---Long
    ------Yueill------

with Steffen behind and tell me with a straight face it's going to work against Mexico and Costa Rica.

If 3G wants to use a regista then he needs to fast track CCV, EPB, or Richards. The regista needs to be able play off and interchange with the CBs. In other words, Long needs to be dropped.

Great word! I think you may have used it incorrectly (after looking up the definition and examples of usage). Definitely, though, Jozy's play is often desultory. I hope I can remember this word.
