Schalke need some cash and the best thing they could do is sell Mckinnie if the price is right but I dont think it is. Right now I dont see a ton of crazy moves around the world for higher prices. They are best to have him through 2021 and sell during that summer as prices begin to right themselves.
Yikes... Schalke are last in the Rückrundentabelle with a GD of MINUS NINETEEN. #S04 pic.twitter.com/wIinjVWIwx— Stefan Buczko (@StefanBuczko) May 27, 2020
you know, I read on Twitter that WM was ball watching which led to him keeping the goal scorer onside and based on the cyclone of dumping on him thought it would probably be overstated. Then I watched the game yesterday and was proved more right than I could have imagined. WM is doing exactly what he should, goalside marking on a player close to the ball. Did he lose contact? Yes, so you stay goal side. AND on watching the video feed it looked like he was in a position to block a goal-bound header, which the photo casts some doubt on, but if you’re in the play looking away from goal and tracking the ball and players, you’re absolutely in the right to stay rooted and try to block a shot. this play happens 100 times and the only time a player in WM’s position gets blamed is when he is YA’s ‘Disappointment of the Month’ sorry, the people ball watching were on the back post.
Each player had his man: McKennie is marking the guy who scored the 1st goal, Hennings (28). Kenny (20) is marking Karaman (11), who will score the rebound. Kabak (4) is marking Ayhan (5), the guy who managed the initial header. Nastasic (5) is marking Hoffmann (3). Oczipka (24) is marking the just subbed in Bodzek (13). Also note that Kenny is also putting the forwards onside when Thommy (15) sends in the cross. Sané (26) is the free man supposed to keep an eye on anyone leaving his marker behind.
McKennie is in a bit of trouble, it seems, over some declarations to the German media: https://sportbild.bild.de/bundeslig...s-fischer-weston-mckennie-70880834.sport.html The American recently revealed how he had lived during the Corona break: “On days off, I get up at 1 p.m., get on the couch at 2 p.m., I watch Netflix from 3 p.m., and I only train in the evening." This made World Subchampion [and Schalke legend Klaus] Fischer angry. "This statement is an impudence. Lying in bed until 1 p.m., hello? Why is that happening? In what world are we living? He plays football for Schalke and is paid for it. I expect a professional not to sleep until 1 p.m. but to train,” Fischer said to SPORT BILD.
Entertaining find, there. The article goes on to say that McKennie took this harsh criticism to heart and thus scored a goal next game. Gotta love Bild! As far as the marking on the corner. I watched it about 10 times on replay. The Fortuna #11 is marked by McKennie at the very beginning, before the ball is played, then #11 drifts to the other side of goal. McKennie stays put and then marks #28. All in all, a great executed set piece by Düsseldorf. Quick restart, short corner, bring in the cross far post and headed down to guy who snuck over to near post. Lots of movement off the ball and defense left confused. Well executed, poorly defended all around.
Karaman wasn't his man though. Since he scored, Wes had been marking Hennings (Sané had been on him before). I'd say it was Kabak's mistake to allow Ayhan's initial header, then Kenny completely losing Karaman.
There are two things that people seem to be faulting him for there, but neither of them seem all that egregious to me, even if I were to grant that another player might have done better: First, McKennie is marking Hennings, and he's close to him when the ball is delivered, but there's some distance between them by the time the ball reaches Ayhan a bit further away. Some people are saying McKennie should have stayed tighter to Hennings through the entire play, even thought Hennings couldn't reach the ball that was played in. Which might be true, but if he did lose him it was in the split second after the ball was delivered to a slightly different area, which seems a lot less egregious than losing him entirely from the start and allowing the player crossing the ball to pick him out. Second, it appears McKennie is the one who keeps Karaman onside when he pounces on the flick-on header, which could have been avoided if McKennie had stayed tight to Hennings after the cross was delivered. But failing to step up in time on a flick on header off a short corner seems a lot different to me than the typical failure to step up and execute an offside trap during the normal run of play, or off a free kick (which players are rightly criticized for regularly). And uniteo makes a good point that it may be better to try to block the shot at that point instead.

WM tactical foul to stop a counterattack, picked up his 5th yellow of the season. On one hand, WM will, unfortunately, miss the next game. On the other hand, now I'm not forced to watch Schalke. Cool royal blue uniforms, terrible soccer to watch.

As usual, one of the few decent parts on a bad, bad team. Had to get him off to avoid a red, as he was pretty stuck in.
