Yes. We make decisions all the time in our society to allow things to go on that will kill people. No one in their right mind thinks the goal with our response to this virus is to get the death rate to zero. Our goal has always been to keep the infection rate at a level that doesn't swamp the healthcare system.
Never mind that education isn't 100% effective against bullshit. I'm friends with plenty of otherwise intelligent people who were educated at good schools -- which you can take to mean that they were college classmates of mine -- who consistently show their asses on social media.
Government can help, but not without buy-in from the people. By the way, much of the problem has been from government NOT helping, or not helping quick enough. Having a president call it a "hoax" is not helping. Having the political party in charge not take it serious does not help. So you are fine with people in "residential facilities such as nursng homes and prisons, people over 65, pre-existing medical problems..." dying? Got it, thanks. Are you: 1. Really dense, 2. Evil, 3. Trying to troll? You present almost no rational thought and do not formulate an argument. Just trying to figure out the level of engagement.
That's not going to happen. I know you know that. It's simply not politically feasible. Even with a UBI, the idea that people are going to, what, not see their friends and family members and mostly stay in their houses for 12 months is beyond unlikely, bordering on delusional. The horse has left the barn on that. We missed that chance early on and there's no going back. Call it blase if you like, but wishful thinking about our current options isn't really a basis for our approach to this virus going forward.
The fact that you have written that off, and believe this is politically feasible: Is why the United States is not the world's sole superpower any more.
This is a different post, because it needs to be addressed separately. The governments of dozens of other countries, many of which have large deficits and political gridlock, are doing precisely what you call "wishful thinking." If you stop for a second to think before you post -- even just a second -- you might find yourself not posting as much.
I'd still give a dying protester Facetime- but I'd have a hacker redirect the feed to the families of victims who did try, so they can point and laugh while the protester dies
Ditto here. I'm 5'8", 165 and run 25-30 miles a week. I'm in terrific shape by all metrics. If I get covid-19, I like my odds, although there are many stories of people who were in perfect health getting completely wiped out by it and there are many more of people suffering long-term organ damage after recovering from it. But... My mother-in-law lives with us. She's had multiple strokes in the past five years and is dealing with respiratory and cardiac issues. I don't like her odds quite as much if I bring it home. So I'm working from home, I'm masking up on the uncommon errand, and I'm putting in a lot of miles on the treadmill even when the weather is nice outside. I ain't doin' all that because I'm scared. I'm doin' all that because I don't want to be a spreader.
What we've learned in all of this is that many people who are repulsed by communism are nonetheless pretty damn collectivist.
William Reid In the '94 WC I was watching Ireland-Holland in Kearny, NJ with the old timers. Tony C. came on & made some jackass move and one of them yelled something like "fer crissakes he's only good for makin pizzas!" Which cracked up the whole bar that was sitting through that steaming hot mess of a performance in Orlando.
Anne Frank lived in an attic for 25 months, but Trace, Chase and Blake's fee-fees get hurt if they can't go to the country club until August
In Mormon parlance (or more correctly, in talking about a particular Mormon phenomena) there's something called "Lying for the Lord." This is particularly used in discussing early LDS history which is full of strange, disturbing, and/or just different things, in order to present the Church in a better light. "Lying for Jesus," now that's pernicious because it can also be focused outwardly at other people (to knock them down) rather than just inwardly on the faith itself. It typically refers to more mainstream Christianity and for most of my life has been centered on bringing people to Jesus. This new variant to prove they are right about everything is a disturbing trend. This lady fits that bill but so does the general trend of Evangelical support for Trump.
Previously, when we as a country were not taking this seriously or were not ready to take this seriously, there were hospitals all over which got overwhelmed. Now that things have stabilized, things have gotten better. But what you and @Potowmack are saying is that because things are better, we need to go back to some kind of normal. But if we do that, we go back to getting hospitals overwhelmed. I wish you two would be more forward thinking about consequences rather than backward looking and reactionary.
There are two failures: Critical thinking and confirmation bias. And I struggle to understand how you can dismiss 100,000 deaths because of this virus. Seriously, explain how you can be so dismissive of 100,000 people dying.
So, the island I live on hasnt seen a confirmed case now since May 7. We have 1 confirmed active case on the island. We have a population of about 1 million, with roughly 400k in the main city. It's no major City at all, but we aren't exactly rural in the City either. Being on island helps I think. Then again, our province, about 5 million, is still only clocking 10 to 30 new lab confirmed cases a day. I think many countries around the world are proving we can co exist with this thing on a short term basis without sacrificing hundreds of thousands of lives.
Right. And that was the point of my story, which I guess I didn't vocalize - the potential direct line from me to my neighbor's mother, literally on her deathbed right now. And that scenario multiplied millions of times across the country. And she's not some super old, ill woman. I mean, I don't know her medical history, but hanging out with her at our BBQs she's, fit, not overweight, lively, etc.
