Don't think Pavlenka (GK) will be a bremer much longer. Best player on their team. Maybe a top 3 GK in the bundesliga.
0 shots, 5/11 passing, didn't even attempt a pass in his 18 second-half minutes. Way to seize that opportunity, Josh.
He was pretty invisible. Had some good clearances though. Kohfeldt has him doing all the right things.
Don't know how much: move the ball forward was in the game plan. This team needs points. He was in there to work the CB's and DM's and operate the first line of defense. If the score holds, I guess it is vindicates his play and coaches game plan. Bremen used to be such a fun team to watch...15 years ago.
They were decent to watch last season. This season, they're scoring .6 goals per games fewer than last. Massive dropoff. The 1-0 win puts Bremen 2 points behind Dusseldorf for 16th place. I thought I had read that they cancelled the relegation playoff, but everywhere I look seems to suggest that 16th is still destined for that playoff. Can someone confirm either way?
126 - After gaining only 1 point from the past 7 #Bundesliga games, #Werder Bremen celebrate their first win since MD 18 (1-0 in Düsseldorf) - 126 days ago. Hope. #SCFSVW pic.twitter.com/hB7oxaRvvz— OptaFranz (@OptaFranz) May 23, 2020
The table on the league website still shows the playoff. Phillip Bagfrede was sent off in the 88th minute. Josh Sargent goes 63 minutes for Werder Bremen in a massive 1-0 win over Freiburg. Not sure how they pulled it off - Freiburg was better and had a goal disallowed via VAR but Bremen gets the result and a lifeline in its relegation battle #USMNT— Brian Sciaretta (@BrianSciaretta) May 23, 2020

Didn't get on the ball much, and still needs to do better at making himself an outlet, but he seemed more aware & engaged than usual.— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) May 23, 2020
For #USMNT followers, Josh Sargent until being subbed.- 21 touches - won 36% of his challenges #SCFSVW— Derek Rae (@RaeComm) May 23, 2020
I watched most of the game while Sargent was playing. They weren’t looking to pass him the ball much, but Josh wasn’t getting in ones spaces much either. Josh could have easily gotten that goal, he was wide open. Bittencourt was selfish, but he did put it away.
Was Doyle actually watching the same Dortmund game I was. A slight mistake on the wide portion of the field by Brooks. Poor cover by the rest of Wolfsburgs defense. Second goal Brooks was pushed up probably by design chasing a goal. If you want a true look at Brooks take a look at Haland's stats.
Nah man, I'm talking about the Klose days. The Diego days. The days when Pizzaro wasn't covid compromised. Even after when 'young' Ozil was getting hyped.
Yea, I started watching them around 2005. 2005-2012 or so they were awesome to watch playing champions league regularly and domestically usually in the hunt for the title/champions league places. Their best players kept getting poached though and you can only pull the rabbit out of that hat so many times replacing players of that ability. It’s been a bummer to watch their fall but last year with Kruse they did have an entertaining attack. They should have a better attack this year. They still have some wonderful attacking talent. Rashica has been one of the best AM in the league in recent years.
Sargent just constantly makes bad runs. He runs away from the ball when he should check to it. And he checks to the ball when he should run into space. With his mediocre athleticism this is something he must fix.
I have been pondering the idea of calling him Josh "No Service" Sargent. I am not even sure he was fed once during the 60+ minutes. The play that really pissed me off was when Klassen had the ball in space in front of goal and Sargent was on his right with a clear passing lane but Klassen decided to pass it out wide left to Rashica and he didn't even connect with him as the defender intercepted. Offensively, this team is chalk full of guys that are selfish near the goal... always looking to shoot from near or outside the 18 instead of identifying the open space/man and dishing it off. They are the anti-Dortmund. That team passes so well in the opponent's penalty area that they seem to have at least one sitter per game. At any rate, Josh put in a decent performance IMO... he certainly seems like a better option than Selke: 3 goals and 3 assists in 1131 minutes AAC = 1 G/A per 188.5 minutes 2 goals and 2 assists in 1483 minutes AAC = 1 G/A per 371.0 minutes Josh's number are not great but Selke's are downright awful.... and from what I have seen it looks like Josh is better at winning aerials and creating decent flick-ons.... but I don't have any stats to back that up.
And I feel like he's getting worse in this regard the longer he's at Bremen. I thought when he was with the US u-20s and in his first couple caps with the US, his movement was pretty good. Now, it seems like he works quite hard, but is over-thinking things and has lost that intuitive feel he had for making good runs.
It's a tough one, but I have to put this on a coach who has not imposed a personality on their playing style and a lack of leader on the team. Seeing this more amore these days. Just some weak knee milk toast characters. Tired of seeing it on the US team and tired at these big clubs . Personality has been eradicated from so much of the sporting world.
It surprises you that a U20 player looks different playing professional football? Remember Clint Dempsey? He thought he had moves and within 6 months at Fulham he was brought right back to reality. He went about being extremely strong on the ball. He never lost 50/50 challenges and he took his chances very seriously .Seargent will absolutely need to learn to make better runs. Hold up the ball, but he has all the tools. At some point it will all come together. I hope.
Josh off-the-ball movements is the one thing I liked the most about him. He used to move into good open positions waiting for the pass that never arrived. Now he's just erratic. I guess he stopped caring, seeing that no one wants to play with him. Poor kid.
