lol. When I was younger, I’d meet young ladies every week who would say that they’re actresses and/or models and it would eventually come out that they’re actually a hostess at some high end club/restaurant.

it doesn’t matter what you want to be, it’s what you are that’s the truth.

by the way, MO means method of operation and that’s actually the way the best Dutch’s club operate even if they have delusions of grandeur.

  2. So Ajax's CL semi final and 1 minute from the final and beating up superstar teams in their own den, Real 1-4 and Juve 1-2 and Tottenham 0-1 is a delusion of grandeur?

Sorry but AJAX has had huge European dreams and a plan. No one else in the Eredivisie has. Without Ajax, the coefficient is in the 20s.

PSV is content signing guys like Viergever to start, competing for Eredivisie, taking no risks and getting destroyed in Europe. Feyenoord seems to not be able to get out of their own way. I give AZ credit: they have a plan, they're developing players and they had a legit shot for CL next year. They have serious young talent. It seems like Vitesse at least is trying. Utrecht seems content to lose to teams from Belarus in EL playoffs.

Rest of the league has no aspirations. No one else other than Ajax (and AZ to a degree) have done anything in Europe for a long time.

  5. I'm not the one dissing Ajax's aspiration level. The troll was.

I don't think I've ever been more happily startled by a US prospects rise. When I watch this kid play, I think I see a technically sound fullback, with decent defensive instincts, who's an average athlete. I would have rated his potential to be at a side that's at best a consistent Champion's League 1st knock-out round side.

Yet here we are, and Bayern Munich and Barca have both had verified (by trusted sources) interest in him.

I have no idea what to make of all this, other than I've severely underestimated Dest.

The more years I watch prospects the more I see that it's just sheer overall confidence and daring that sets players apart. Nerves of steel might be a better way to think of it. Or, maybe the Dempsey spirit. If you can get on the field and play the top players like they were any other player then you are better than 90% of prospects. The problem is that it's hard to tell who has that until you put them on the field against those guys.

I love Dest but I would be very concerned if he went to a team like Bayern, Barca or any other major team at this time..

My guess is he would be loaned out or wouldnt play that much. He needs to go to a lower tier EPL, La Liga or Budi team. I think Dortmund would play him quite a few minutes since they are losing 4 backs of their team this summer and they love the youngsters. However the bigger clubs are a lot of spotlight for a youngster of his age right now.

Not a name I was expecting. Not a metaphor I was expecting. You got me floored.

Though with respect to Dest, I should qualify that I meant average for "players who you might see in the Champion's League, EPL, Bundesliga, Serie A, or La Liga".

I mean, compared to me he's about a 10000% more athletic, but I'm not exactly a Barca level footballer.

You might be right about this, one thing I do love about Dest is that he plays with a TON of confidence on both ends of the pitch.

Maybe that mitigates any physical deficiencies?

That;s relative right? The kid is a starting RB for Ajax at the age of 19. Which proves he's better than approx 99% of the right backs in the world, when you consider how much football is played out there. That pretty much immediatly elevates him over much of the lesser leagues, and a good chunk of the Prem, La Liga, Serie A, and Bundesliga.

I mean DeAndre Yedlin wouldn't start for Ajax, but he's better than probably a 3rd of the EPL's right backs.

So at some level, Dest HAS proven himself. He hasn't proven himself to be a world class quality, which is what you need to break into either Munich or Barca, but that's why players aim for those levels.

What's hilarious is I can actually remember the play you're thinking of. Match against Klinsmann's Germany that basically saved his job right? We were down and rather than crossing to a wide open player, he attempted to cut in?

that's the moment... but it was just... the slowness of it... the obvious reluctance of using his left... the ability to look at the tv screen and see the fear in his thought process falling from his head. I truly don't know what happened to him in those 4 seconds, but it honestly felt like a setback to the whole US Soccer program. I still cringe to this day...

Confidence directly impacts reaction speed so in this game where most athletic battles are fought in the space of 1 to 30 feet then, yeah, it does.

Let's establish the scope of what was said. We were talking about U20 prospects and how surprising what Dest has already proved versus other prospects. He is after all Ajax's talent of the year.

  19. Of course it is. He's better than many many players on his position for sure.

  20. I wasnot referring to Dest, but made a catch all remark.
He has proven himself up to a certain level at Ajax for sure.

Don’t forget, last years talent of the year was Mazraoui, a player a lot of posters here have trashed in reference to Dest.
The talent of the year generally goes to the previously unestablished player that makes the most impact in the step from the youth team to the 1st team. This was undeniably Dest this year and Mazraoui last year. Thats not to say Mazraoui was a bigger talent than De Ligt (absolutely no way) but he was already considered established just like Frenkie and Donny van de Beek. So really Dest had no competition for this. Next year Gravenberch, Unuvar, etc. may have a shout.

But thats an aside. Just saying don’t overstate the TOTY award. Dest made big steps and I bet Ajax is stoked. Either he’s sold for big bucks or its a youth player who came up and reached the first team. Entirely win-win for Ajax either way!

  22. Some posters seem to think the only way to establish the quality of their favourite is by trashing other ones that are a threat to him. They seem to believe in the power of words on BS to protect their fav boys.
Hint to them: it doesnot work.

This is where I am. Usually with Ajax talents, you hear about them for years before they break into the first team. Unuvar is 16 and I feel like I've been hearing about him for 10 years. But Dest came out of no where.

I saw someone went at you on "average" athlete. You're correct. He's a decent athlete but nothing special. When he tries to track guys down, you can see he's not that fast. Nothing wrong with that. I rather be technically gifted than a crazy athlete.

TBF, Maz has not had a good year.

TBF to Maz, he has injury issues.

But there's a guy not playing at Heerenveen who was once the Ajax/Dutch RB of the future.

Being a top pro over many/most seasons is not always an easy row to hoe.
