When you lack athleticism, you have to make up for it with amazing game insight. The question then is, does Durkin have amazing game insight leading to amazing decision making?

For me, the answer is no, and there in lies his ceiling as a player. He seems like a nice kid and I am rooting for him to succeed, but the old Cruyff saying, “Who cares who runs the fastest if I always arrive at the right place first?”, doesn’t apply to Durkin. His game insight is good, when it needs to be great.

At best he can strive to be a “deck chair on the Titanic” type player at the national team level - still a very good level for a kid from Richmond. That said, I wish him a long, successful career in Europe at a level he can thrive in.

Ideally I'd see Chris as a CB. Good size (and will get stronger), can for sure provide an outlet, pass out of the back, and carry the ball. However his defensive recognition has always seemed just a tad too slow. Whereas his fellow U17 WC CB, James Sands, always seems right place at the right time during his MLS career.

The source isn't the best, but here's another club Dest is linked with.

I'd say that's a realistic concern for him until he gets more experience.

I think I'm one of the only people who wouldn't want him to move to a Bayern or Tottenham level club. I think Ajax would be best for him and he needs to fully establish himself as a concrete starter and improve his 1v1 defending before he moves to a super team in a bigger league. Serg has to fix his problem where he mentally checks out for a play and puts his team under pressure. His teammates have been shown screaming him out during games because of this problem and he'll get benched at bigger clubs because of it

Just a quibble, the "reaming" was for always attacking with a lead. Not for ball watching defensively. We don't know if this was something he was told to keep doing by the coach and the captain thought differently either.

I think he'd be great at Spurs, though I'm biased. They desperately need a right back and also someone on the left. They'll be in Europa at worst, have plenty of games and he'll get minutes. Aurier is nothing to write home about so there's every chance he could earn the 1st spot. Good money, a step up significantly comparing leagues, and still room to improve and be sold on which nets him another huge transfer in the future.

Mourinho, no UCL, a league where they discard you after a bad five months, and he’s very soft and the Premier League isn’t.

I’d prefer he move to Bayern Munich, but I think Ajax is better than Spurs.

A gradual progression in physicality for a league would be better than a drastic increase where Dest likely sinks instead of swims. He is also only 19 years old so there is no rush to even move teams or move to the Premier League. For the USMNT he has 11 good years left in him as he'll have value all the way until the 2030 cycle.

Being denied the work permit will benefit him IMO. I don’t like the idea of our players being on the books of English teams, but he won’t get a work permit until he’s a full USMNT player and if he’s a full USMNT player, he should probably be good enough to play a regular role at Norwich. On the other hand, English teams are notorious for not giving playing time to young players, so maybe not.

I don’t see him getting enough appearances ahead of Sargent and Jozy to get him to automatically qualify for a WP in the next year or so. And International friendlies don’t count towards a WP.

He’s going to have to tear it up at his loan destination because we have to deal that Zardes is ahead of him as well on the depth chart currently.

The good thing is that none of those players are that good (currently). If Soto is able to go to Belgium or Netherlands, and put up half a goal per game or a goal every third game, he should have a claim for regular USMNT minutes.

Not sure that he is in top 10 forwards. I hope they have some other ideas besides getting WP based on NT games.

A persistent rumor since Gloster left Hannover was Soto going to PSV. If Norwich signs him for $200K TC payment, then loans him to PSV for a $400K loan fee, does this work around various Dutch league rules for foreign players?

I'm wondering if there was some limitation that was keeping PSV from signing him and a loan through Norwich would ameliorate it.

It could. There’s not a rule saying you can only have a certain number of foreigners. There’s a rule saying you can only have a certain number of non-EU players making more than that number (or a certain number that I’m not going to look up at the moment). If Norwich loans him out, they will probably agree to pay a certain percentage of his wages, so he’d be a lot more appealing to PSV if they don’t have to designate him as a non-EU player that they are going to pay a lot of money to. Even the bigger teams in that league don’t usually have more than 4-5 of them on their roster at once, but if you aren’t paying the full wage, you might not decide to count that player against what you’ve budgeted for.

Soto's agent has not looked good in the past 12 months. If he pulled something like that off, then that would be impressive.

If he signs with Norwich, never plays there, and is loaned to St. Truiden, then that is less impressive.

Unfortunately for Soto, where he first goes on loan may well depend on which leagues open back up first. Both Belgium and the Netherlands have had a bad time with COVID-19 so he may well end up back in Germany or Scotland as other options just won't be possible till next season or beyond.

  21. Nope. PSV has to pay the required minimum wage.
The minimum wage rules are ment to keep players not better than Dutch players out of the league. Loaning for less is going against that rule.
Anyway, why would PSV develop a player for another club and doing so blocking a player from their own stable from growing to a first team asset?

    That makes me happy.

And if Gloster does play for PSV, I will owe you an apology. We call each other out here for players we get wrong. That was one I didn't think had much besides athleticism and you were very much singing his praises.

So, if this happens, kudoses will be coming your way.

Thanks, but there’s no need. We all want these players to succeed. We root for our country, not for individual players. Some players we are right about and others we are wrong. It’s fun to try to figure out which ones are good, but it doesn’t end up mattering because all of us care about seeing the USMNT win, regardless of which of these kids pan out.

Gloster is such an interesting player to me. The bulk of the times I’ve watched meaningful minutes from him were with the U17s and more so with the U20s. After the U20 WC he was one of the players I was most confident in, he’s just so competent across the field. He had good technique, he looked good on the ball, he looked good defending. I felt like for most of the Eredivisie he would easily be able to get meaningful minutes. So him not getting any first team minutes to date was not expected for me. Maybe it was naive of me to think just being an all around solid player would get you minutes at one of the best teams in the Netherlands. Maybe I misread his ability.
