Also: "Asked what they would do if the leagues resumed play before the development of a vaccine, 72 percent of Americans said they would not attend games, with 12 percent saying they would if social distancing could be maintained. Only 13 percent said they would feel safe attending as in the past. Among sports fans the number drops to a still significant 61 percent." That's with a small sample size, but keep in mind one person's likelihood of going to a game isn't independent of others they know. Most people go to games with specific other people, and if one of their group doesn't want to go, the probability of others not wanting to go is higher. So the real probability might be even higher. I'm thinking this season is either going to get played with zero fans or cancelled outright. Having zero knowledge, my hunch would be the former, but I also think there's a real threat to watching sports interest in general begin a long slow death by doing that regularly. http://blogs.shu.edu/sportspoll/202...-games-without-coronavirus-vaccine-developed/
It's crazy how little I have thought of the Fire since mid March. And I just noticed today because I realized that I'm 74% done paying for my season tickets.
Is MLS making masks with logos? And can I get masks with the real Fire logo, not the Brooklyn booger.
my guess is yes, because America, Fvck Yeah! then the playoffs will be cancelled when the second surge crosses the country.
"...playoffs will be cancelled..." Will Chicago Fire fans even know if this happens? "'Playoffs?' What are these playoffs of which you speak?"
Mls fans tend to be very progressive and understanding and smart, so I think they won’t mind not being in the stadium. All hell will break loose in this country if or when the ncaa and nfl ban fans from games.
While this might be anathema to some, I don’t care if MLS has a season or not. I was resigned to sitting this one out in protest over the navy jerseys and botched rebrand, so there was never going to be a season for me anyway. If I’m bummed about anything, it’s that I know Mansueto is losing tons of money now and likely won’t want to invest in the team to (1.) improve the caliber of player and (2.) redesign the brand and pump out fresh merch.
Mansueto isn't sweating about this financially. But the general belief is Garber won't let the Fire pump money into a rebrand a year earlier than allowed while other franchises "bleed". I say "bleed" because let's be honest, none of these owners are feeling the pressure financially.
Without a vaccine, I wonder if there's going to be a season *next* year. Hell, considering this is a positive-stranded RNA virus, even *with* a vaccine I wonder if there's going to be a season next year.
They should have a giant all summer tourney like 'Game of Death'. Remember when the rich guy flew in all ther top fighters to his private island for a big fight? Bruce Lee and Kareem Abdul Jabbar? All the teams go to a single site and quarantine there and play the games on a single field. Drone TV, four games a day until everyone plays everyone twice. Here is an idea for where to do it.
Admittedly, I might not understand any of this, but it would seem odd that the league wouldn't let one of its teams spend money on itself simply because other teams were losing millions, no? I mean, Garber doesn't tell the Galaxy not to sign Ibrahimovic just because the Rapids lose money every year or stop the Fire from rebranding in the first place because the Crew might move to Austin amid millions in losses? FWIW, I pulled a Fire jersey out of my Goodwill pile to wear during quarantine. The Fire will always be my first love, but my relationship to the team is forever altered because of Mansueto's rebrand.
They're trying to get players to accept reduced pay because it's allegedly "hurting" the owners financially. It's a bad look to go ahead and scream poor and then spend big bucks on an early rebrand. MLS owners have to be united on this front because you can't have half the teams paying their players full salary and another half paying 50%.
Players all over the world renegotiated their salaries during this time. While I’m not sure they should have to, there is precedent. That said it shouldn’t be a flat percentage, it should be a sliding scale so those that make very little only give up very little.
I haven't kept up with things in a while. Are bottom of the roster guys still making like $20K. If so they shouldn't have to give up a cent. The billionaire owners can eat it.
