Yeah, for those us watching the packing plants in Nebraska, we're about 2 weeks from watching those people start to fall

Had a tele-medicine this call because I was having some symptoms today that are on the Covid checklist (though they're also on the bad seasonal allergy checklist). The nurse practitioner got me in for another test in less than an hour. She think's it's really unlikely that I got it from my wife, since her symptoms went away about two weeks ago, but there's an outside chance. Private testing facility, five medical personnel hanging around, no line.

Got the throat one this time, rather than the nose.

We ordered a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid in late February and was delivered in late March, but we were in SIP at that point. Our county (Santa Clara) extended earlier in the week the SIP with some changes, but car dealers being open is not one of them (beyond service & repair).

At this point, we don't need the additional car as I'm not commuting to work and probably won't this year (fall at the earliest). Plus, I don't want to additional debt in case the economy really goes south in the next quarter and more jobs are lost (including mine). I'm really looking to the Q2 company reports to tell us the direction moving forward.

That is why i have been looking at reported deaths over expected deaths. We do know how many died from all causes, how much that changed over expected deaths. Then it does not matter what is was attributed to, it only matters that they are counted. Then it is a simple matter to extrapolate covid deaths are the "excess" above the expected.

I also think per capita numbers are a better gauge of the virus than raw numbers. We may lead the world in deaths, but we are barely top ten when counted per capita.

Indeed, the hospitals now have room for more patients which was the point in the first place. IF we can avoid SSEs with thousands of folks causing a major spike we ought to be okay on capacity.

People throw herd immunity around without really understanding that the herd gets thinned on the road to immunity.

The staffer is Katie Miller, Stephen Miller's wife.....

President Trump just confirmed that Katie Miller is the staffer to Vice President Mike Pence who was confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus, CBS News reports.
She is the wife of senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller.

Well, that would be a tragedy if she transmitted the virus both at home and in the office. Just a damn shame if that happened.

The American Conservative's Rod Dreher speaks out on Corona snowflakes...

    On the right:
    https://www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/anti-mask-snowflakes-of-the-right-dan-fagan/

ook, I understand people are mad about social distancing and wearing masks, but a lot of people on the Right are losing their minds. Here’s something from a column by Dan Fagan in my local paper, the Baton Rouge Advocate:

Snipped are the usual stuff about "the COVID-19 scare represent{ing} the greatest challenge to individual liberties since the inception of our great nation. Some of us are reaching a boiling point." Yeah, okay

I’d say you’ve boiled your brain, Cap. This nation was founded in 1776. Here are a couple of challenges to individual liberties since then — challenges that took place right here in our state — that were arguably more important than having to wear a mask when you go out for a po-boy during a pandemic:

What follows are pictures of a slave's back and white people protesting segregation in schools and not looking good while doing so, etc

So yeah, we have had a few things that were a little bit more of a challenge to civil liberties than the mask. Still, Dan Fagan demands to know: "How much further are they going to go? When will this all end? When do we go back to being free?"

Oh for Pete’s sake. Late last year, I sat in a shabby apartment in Moscow, interviewing an elderly man whose father was tortured and executed by the KGB, and who, as a 15-year-old boy, was taken into custody by the KGB one night, and thrown into a prison for years. He cried telling me the story. And now I have to read my local newspaper conservative whine about how we’re living in a police state because of the stupid mask he has to wear when he goes out to buy a six-pack. If the KGB came knocking at the door of Dan “Boiling Point” Fagan, he would spontaneously combust. Hell, if a meter maid came for Dan Fagan’s car, he would soil his britches and squall like the Constitutional Peasant.

Seriously, what is wrong with conservatives? Can we not raise objections to masks, social distancing, and the pandemic protocols without making fools of ourselves? The stories I’m hearing from conservative friends around the country are really embarrassing. Mask off, if that’s what you want, but please, grow up.

Damn good question about "what is wrong with conservatives"? Someone should write a book

The problem with this argument is that it should also mean that we have more resources to combat the spread of the disease. That didn't and hasn't happened.

The problem is finding the balance between opening up the country enough that the number of people going into the hospitals doesn't overwhelm their resources. Finding that balance has largely failed outside of places where they lockdown the population and/or have massive trace programs.

This is definitely not true. It is entirely possible to reach herd immunity without thinning the herd. It's called vaccination.

It's all very strange. A new America the Beautiful $.25 piece with Hillary's likeness was recently shipped from the US Mint. When the crates were opened they had mysteriously morphed from her likeness to.....

Yeah, but that is not the context in which people are using "herd immunity" as it relates to Covid.

Depends what you mean by the people using it tho, doesn't it? If you're talking about the right wing nutjobs that are out protesting, they seem to know full well the consequences of going for herd immunity, they just don't care...
