    League review for February

Atlético Madrid had been in crisis and coach Pablo López was fired on 20 Jan, just a few months after arriving.

The successor as manager, Dani González, got Atlético the win that they desperately needed over Levante (3rd), and in some style at 4-1 away. The next week in a Madrid derby, Atlético won it 1-0 at Madrid CFF.

Behind Levante, it's 8 points to their nearest challengers - Deportivo La Coruña (4th) and Athletic Bilbao (5th), who both dropped points in recent weeks:

    RAYO VALLECANO 2 - 1 DEPORTIVO
    Oriana Altuve 38', 65' - Michelle Romero 36'

    Real Betis 2 - 2 Athletic Bilbao
    Priscila 20', Michaela Abam 72' - Damaris 68', Yulema Corres 86''

Rayo are now up in 7th, after being in last year's relegation battle.
That single point for Real Betis is significant - it lifts them out of the relegation zone on goal difference. Remember, at season's end, a points tie will be decided using the head-to-head rule first.
The first relegation place is between Valencia, Betis and Huelva (17pts), while the other surely belongs to Espanyol (4pts).

Copa de la Reina quarter-finals took place yesterday, 26 Feb, we have our four semifinalists:

    Madrid CFF 0 - Sevilla FC 3 - (Maite 7', Karpova 73', Echeverri 88')

Logroño 1–0 Real Betis - (Jade Boho 67')

    Barcelona 1 - Deportivo 0, AET - (Hamraoui 120')

I watched large parts of that game. Incredible inefficiency from Barcelona. Oshoala should have had two hat-tricks. I believe Deportivo would have won the penalty shoot-out, had they managed to last one more minute.

    No major restrictions, it seems.

In 2002 it was very different - Milene Domingues from Brazil was not even allowed to sign, only to train with Rayo.
There's an article listing overseas players at the start of 2019/20 which says that Atlético Madrid and Sporting Huelva now have the most from abroad.

In Atlético's last women's match, they had 5 non-EU players in the XI and one on the bench. (Men's clubs are limited to 3 non-EU players per match.)

Atlético played a historic match this month in Istanbul, Turkey - as posted in Club friendlies:

Thanks for the info. I was wondering because I had heard about the men's restriction.

Coronavirus outbreak: As usual, the federation RFEF is using a crisis to try to push its own agenda.

With 9 games remaining in 2019/20, the proposal from the top was, "well I guess let's cancel the season and increase the league to 18 teams maybe?"

"The clubs meet today to study the RFEF proposal", 17 April -(El Español)
"FEF considers finishing Primera Femenina, extending to 18 teams" -(La Rioja)

The clubs' response may be naive, but shows better understanding of football:

"Each competition has very specific characteristics, and the impact of any decision can be very different depending on the circumstances. For this reason, from the ACFF we advocate an individual analysis that allows adopting the measures adjusted to each case, and which may not be the same for all non-professional competitions." - (ACFF press release, Plaza Deportiva / Archive)

In the Primera, only two placements were fairly sure, Barcelona in 1st and Espanyol 16th. Even those two still had a lot to play for.

Also, from La Liga on 23 April:
"It would be hasty to cancel the Primera Iberdrola, the Collective Agreement is at risk" - Pedro Malabia, LaLiga Women's Soccer Director: "In the First Iberdrola, you have to wait to make this decision until there is time because a lot is at stake." - (AS.com / Archive)

When we are talking Real Madrid, are the men's side supporting them? Because this could be big. Could change the face of the Spanish women's league with Barcelona and Bilbao and Athletic Madrid usually on top. The new Lyon?

yes & no, for years they ran a 2nd division who they didnt attach their name, rather it's called CD Tacon. They finally made it to D1 this season. Hired a couple of top Swedes & Brazilians but still currently only in 10th place in the league. It will propably take them several new quality players to make them contenders. As for now,
Here's their roster, but I doubt if they got any Spanish NT players(Barca got a dozen of them)

Its kind of weird to lose some players who helped the team get to top division only to be released and get top new players and not able to compete in top division. Its like me celebrating helping the team get to the premier league but get let go and the club use the new funding from promotion for the top players especially NT players.

It was 10 months ago. Real didn't care about women's football until then. (Tacon had been its own club.)

The 2019/20 season is ending, for better or worse...

    After 21 matches
    1st: Barcelona (Champions) 59pts
    2nd: Atlético Madrid (UWCL) 50pts
ahead of Levante 45pts, Deportivo 37

No relegation, so all are safe:
    Betis 20pts, Madrid CFF 19, Huelva 18

Saved in 15th place: Valencia 17pts
    Luckiest team, 16th: Espanyol 5pts

The controversy, and maybe also the most interesting part, is the system they're using and what'll happen next.

Without relegation, the promotions of Eibar (2nd division north) and Santa Teresa (south) will increase the Primera Division from 16 to 18 teams, only for 2020/21, with four relegations at the end of that season. An 18-team Primera would replicate the division's format of 2011/12, before it changed to 16.

The clubs' federation wanted to avoid any splitting of the 1st division into groups as it was before 2011 (Superliga), which they said would be a regressive move.

Barça (1st) and Atlético (2nd) had a points lead and both won the head-to-head against the club below them.

Last-placed Espanyol surviving on 5 points and 0 wins is ... "like, seriously?" ... The only defence is that it keeps the 1st division at an even number of teams. Only one team has had a worse record in the Primera's nine seasons - Lagunak (1 point) in 2012/13.

Reactions - Atlético Madrid (2nd) disagreed with the early conclusion and the decision to name a 2020 champion, which they kinda have to say, and would also say if they had won. :D

[IMG] Colombia's Carolina Arbeláez (Deportivo) says the decision is a bit sexist because the top men's football league hasn't ended - the RFEF ruling applies only to 'non-pro' leagues. "I respect it, but it doesn't seem correct".

Real Betis' Priscila Borja said their decision showed their "lack of interest" in women's football.

The men's La Liga is clinging to the hope of resuming its next football cash, uh, clash, by just pretending coronavirus isn't there... (the "U.S. government" approach). After testing, 5 La Liga players were diagnosed with the virus yesterday.

Financially, each women's club loses out on €600,000 from the TV deal with the unplayed games.

Barça captain Vicky Losada would've preferred to win it on the field but said the team's 5th title was valid.

When men's La Liga restarted last week, Diego Costa raised a Virginia Torrecilla 14 jersey, in honour of his Atlético Madrid clubmate after she had brain surgery.

If there's another lockdown and restart, Spain's male and female leagues should be treated equally - that's the message from the federation.
Under Spanish law it classified only 2 football divisions as "professional competitions" - both in the men's league. From now on, this will also apply to the women's First and Second Divisions, and in futsal. The change passed after going to the government sports council (CSD).

The debate continues for professionalization / Continúa el debate por la profesionalización de la Primera Iberdrola (Archive)

Four teams will be promoted into the Second Division this weekend, with the playoffs happening at a central venue in Madrid. Teams include the Real Betis and Espanyol 'B' selections:

All games at the RFEF headquarters in Las Rozas de Madrid - these clubs were the winners of the 7 Nacional divisions plus a runner-up Almassora from Valencia.

In the Primera Division, Eibar and Santa Teresa have won promotion without playoffs (and no relegations this year).

Champions League: The final rounds in August will all be played in the Basque country in Bilbao and San Sebastián.
Barcelona's manager, Lluís Cortés, has a contract extension to 2021; the national champions are in training camp now for the new season. Their upcoming opponents in the CL quarter-final, Atlético Madrid, began their training on 5 July.

Two days until Barça v Atlético in the Champions League 2019/20, and there are huge headaches for the Atleti coach Dani González...

5 members of the squad or staff contracted coronavirus - thus losing players, and suspending days of first-team training. Fortunately for the Madrid team, new signings are allowed to play, but there are too many for their squad for the CL knockout.

Atlético have signed England midfielder Jade Moore on loan from Orlando, announced today, but the AS.com article above seems to say Moore isn't eligible to play for them this week.
