I got some interesting news from my Doctor daughter in Boston, where they were hoping to reopen at the end of May (assuming Boston peaked). Now the clinic she’s at is saying they don’t know if they will ever reopen because they cannot get PPE to begin examining patients again.

    News article headline:
Coronavirus: Tuesday’s numbers show California hasn’t flattened COVID-19 curve yet
and the article said the same thing. Not LA county.

So now you are re-writing the article? Are you Evan Webeck? If not, he may not appreciate that.

In any case, I've found that the log curves are much more helpful in understanding the progression of the case loads in any given area.

LA County is also clearly off the exponential rise.
I've yet to see a location that goes back exponential once it's crested and flattened.

It a start, he noted that 14% of the state might of already had the virus, that is the highest state total I have seen but makes sense as NY is responsible for about 40% of US deaths from Covid-19. Both studies in CA point to about 0.5% of the population being infected.

The NY numbers are zoning in a death rate of 0.74% which is way higher than the 0.1% of typical Flu.

    - 2.7M in state infected
    - 20K dead from Covid-19
    - 20,000/2,700,000 = .0074 = .74%

They did really well, got to 94 on 4/22 with 6 deaths so maybe 4/23 might hit 100.

    - 4/22 - 94 with 6 deaths

Yeah!! That’s really good news. It’s way less lethal than we thought!!

HOWEVER, it’s really, really, really contagious. And because people can spread it long before they show symptoms, that increases the likelihood that it will spread. Though the lethality rate is low, if the infection is wide spread enough, that will still mean huge numbers of dead people. Mostly older people, many with some other underlying illness or condition. But still, we’re talking about lots and lots of dead people.

And lots of people in the hospital will mean overwhelming our medical facilities, especially in small communities with small hospitals and clinics.

The notion that it is much wider spread and that a fair number of people have fought it off easily is great news. But it’s not a reason to end the shelter in place orders.

    Go Humans!!
    F@#$ the virus!!

Blood serum as treatment is well known and has been used for a lot of really serious diseases, including Ebola.

I’ve been hoping for this sort of effort. BUT, early Fall is the soonest we could expect it to go into general use? That’s much faster than a vaccine, but still a ways off.

I have friends who live in a condo in Denver. Their next door neighbor died of coved-19 this morning. That’s really anecdotal, but both of my friends are in “at risk” categories. They mean to stay locked down at least a month longer than the rest of Denver or Colorado.

    Go Humans!!

One interesting aspect of the data is that a substantial percentage of the population seems to lack a propensity to catch the disease. If you look at the cruise ships and more recently, at the Roosevelt, the numbers are startling. For example, the navy ship, about 5000 people aboard in very tight quarters. They have now tested everyone, and almost 800 were positive for the virus. One has died (presumably this is a relatively young/healthy population, the opposite of the cruise ships -- but even there, a majority of people tested were negative, including spouses of those infected.) So fully 5/6 of the sailors were exposed yet did not become infected.

For a while, I was hearing that having type A blood predisposed you to infection. I don't think that theory went anywhere, but I wonder if anyone is sequencing the DNA of infected people -- would be interesting to find out if there were specific mutations that protected or exposed certain members of the population. I realize it's not a priority right now, but how helpful would that be?

Hmmmmm. My auto-correct keeps changing covid to coved. Dang it! And it doesn't do until after I click the post button. I'm going to have to edit my posts to fix that.

Into the Percent sign. When converting into percent you move the decimal two places to the right.

    1 out of 100 is 1%.

    1/100 = .01 = 1%

in case anyone's interested (and because it comes on again at 9), Rachel Maddow did an extended section on Santa Clara County tonight and our local response to the virus. She also interviewed Dr Cody. Nice to see her getting some national recognition for her quick thinking.

He sounded like he was serious, but, his comments were even for him, stunningly moronic. He seemed to be confused by the fact that, yes, sunlight and disinfectant can kill the virus on external surfaces, but, you can't ingest disinfectant or zap yourself with UV light and expect it to kill the virus if you already have the disease.
And isn't this the guy who told us during his visit to the CDC last month that he has such a great mind for this stuff and perhaps should have become a doctor? This is utterly frightening.
