Was Gago overrated? I seem to remember the initial excitement when we signed him because he was from Argentina and his hair looked like Redondo’s so we all got a little fizzy sensation but it wore off pretty soon as we saw he just didn’t have it. I don’t recall many people here hyping him. He was a bench player and injuries ruined whatever potential he might have had.

LOL, what sort of rubbish is that?!? Freddy Adu’s talent was incredible at youth level, he didn’t pan out...
Gago’s career was even worse than Diarra after he left Madrid, and he wasn’t even good for us other than a few hints of magic.

Gago cost 20 ME in 2007. Aguero cost 20 ME six months before that and Pato for 24 ME. Gago was as expensive as any top prodigy those days. Higuain and Marcelo combinedly cost less than Gago. Hype was like next Redondo, but he never looked like an exceptional talent for any period once he started playing.

Marcelo was virtually unknown, and Higuain was considered a bust when we bought him. Newspapers claimed Higuain would be playing for Albacete in a couple years and were pushing for Soldado back then.

.... and the same papers built Gago up to be the next Redondo.

    They were wrong.

Both players careers skyrocketed; Marcelo who was seen as the lowest became the highest. Gago the star was the absolute bust.

Obi Mikel was supposed to be a generational talent as well. Not every fantastic young player becomes a great senior player. Otherwise we'd have 10 Ronaldos now.

The Dos Santos brothers? The Atleti sensations like Oliver Torres?

My Chelsea mate is convinced to this day Obi Mikel would have turned out to be a star if played in his preferred position, the 10 role, instead of being transformed into a more defensive mid to suit Chelsea’s needs at the time.

Not saying I agree or disagree because I didn’t follow him when young but it goes back to the fact that some players need just the right conditions to succeed whilst others thrive even under difficult circumstances. Gago, Marcelo and Higuaín all came at the same time, in the same struggling team, two of the lesser polished players before joining became stars and the other struggled.

One thing I will always give credit to Gago for though was that 90th min no look assist for Roberto Carlos against Recreativo Huelva (I think?) away.

I think Higuain took his chances like barely any other player i can remember. He came on and almost always scored, it was incredible. I see Gago as a player similar to Canales. Had a lot of promise but a combination of not finding the right situation for him and injury misfortune prevented him from possibly doing more.

Marcelo was given tons of time to SUCK until he got it right. :D

What does Obi Mikel have to do with this?

At least I admit Obi Mikel never reached his potential, while you are still doing some weird defense for Gago.

Irony with Obi Mikel was he was forced to play as a DM which altered his development.... and he still didn't bust as bad as Gago who wasn't forced to play where he didn't understand.

It could be any other name. Jese, Oliver Torres, Deulofeu. There are more talents than don't work out than talents that do. It's just an example.

    Thank you.

So weird he is defending him, so much he is bringing random players into the discussion which has nothing to do with that as a context.

This conversation is dead, but John Obi Mikel had a considerably more successful career than Gago, and played at the highest level for longer. Poor comparison.

ESPNFC made a list of the 36 best 21-and-under players. Madrid players that make the list: Vinicius, Valverde, Hakimi, Rodrygo, Odegaard

Interestingly, Vinicius comes in at 4th on the list, above the likes of Haaland, Felix, Valverde, Havertz and only behind Mbappe Sancho and Trent. That's some pretty high praise for Vini
