It was supposed to sit on a shelf, (preferably on a bookshelf devoted to the history and literature of Argentina) you're not supposed to actually play with it.
I've read on FB that a lot of folks believe he would not be successful because of the supposed difficulty in getting players to adapt to his tactics, but I would submit that as a good coach and, reputedly, not a moron, he would be more than able to modify his tactics and strategy based on the pool of players, his opponents, and the allocated training time. I think he might be a very good coach for the US team, because we have played boring, terrible, awful, impossible-to-watch soccer for several years and I'm ready for a change.
I’m not sure how Almeyda would do with a national team. You definitely need the right combination of players to adapt to his system. A main concern I see is he has time to teach players what he wants them to do with a club. A national team though, gets together trains and plays at best 10-15 times a year give or take depending on which tournament or qualifier they are involved with. A lot of different players are also in and out of a national team pool as opposed to a club setup. It would be nice to see the national team play with Almeyda’s system as after 30 years, I’ve yet seen the USMNT develop their own style. Even when they made the quarterfinals in the 2002 WC or finished 4th in the Copa America in 2016, there was no style or flair in the way they played.
I'll hold judgement until he can shed dead weight that we have on contracts. Then we'll have a much better idea if he could pull the right players from the pool for his system.
I don't think it would work and I have said it before. No large numbers play his system so he has to train them all and has no time to do it. I bet if he could just grabbed a bunch of average American players and worked with them full time then he could make it happen with some success.
I’d be surprised if he was hired without having won anything with the Quakes. He still needs to accomplish something in MLS and other than making a little bit of a dent last season, he hasn’t done anything to merit the job yet. Losing the first first four and 9 out of the last 11 games in 2019 still isn’t good on any resume. This coupled with a pretty horrible start this campaign is nothing to brag about.

I think that’s how he got the name ‘pelado’ initially because he shaved his head when he was a young player...
Considering that he was continously named El Pelado even with long hair, will he now be named El Peludo? GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
I tell you guys, this is just to cover up that bald spot I noted last season. Either that, or he’s going to be on Men in Blazers.
LOL! I saw this on FB earlier and thought it was a joke; photoshopped or a guy who resembles him. Is that really Matias?!...
"Breaking news: Matias Almeyda shaved his head" (Center Line Soccer - Tuesday, 4/14/20) Twitter (@SJEarthquakes.com) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
The video is in Italian but looking at the highlights will give you an idea of how Almeyda was as a player. They said that he was the best defensive center half in the world during his playing days. That’s pretty incredible!
I bet a bunch of players around the league are watching us right now and thinking to themselves they would love a chance to play for Almeyda on the quakes.
The Quakes played Almeydas system beautifully last night against RSL. LALAs said as soon as other, stronger teams figure them out, them will play them differently. Bravo Matias!
Lalas is just spewing hot air on TV...it's not about matching San Jose tactically but rather changing and adapting your mindset when facing a team that has 100% bought into the play style and plays a hectic and aggressive tempo from the first whistle which is what's been the downfall of most opponents. It's hard to match that type of gameplan if ALL of your players have not bought into what it takes to match them. The vast majority of the goals scored against the Quakes have been egregious individual errors by our players and as long as we're able to limit those then it will be hard to beat us.
