To paraphrase what I said a week or so ago, there are two things I know. First, the virus started somewhere and somehow in China, secondly, I now can't watch the Quakes. The fact that I can't watch the Quakes bothers me more than not knowing the precise origins of the virus. Who gives a crap, it's here now and we need to deal with it.

I found some Donkeys I hadn't been tracking closely: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/apr/04/america-rightwing-christian-preachers-virus-hoax

With this attitude on the religious right, coupled with COVID-19's impact on people over 60, Republicans are screwed for the next few elections, just on voting numbers alone. Add to that the impact on the economy (people out of work with no insurance) and I think Bernie Sanders is going to start looking pretty good to most of voting America.

I wonder how much change this is going to push over the next 4 years... could we be headed to a Scandinavian model of Socialism?

the brainwashing of half the American people by the science-deniers, the religious right, the president and Fox "news" is alarming, extremely dangerous for everyone and, has absolutely slowed the effort to take critical & appropriate counter measures costing many thousands of lives that could've been saved.

Because if people don't agree with you they are brainwashed. And everyone who agrees with you is smart.

I'm just going to put it out there that your thinking may need to go a bit deeper on this one. Is it possible that other people may have other reasons for disagreeing?

Great point. Different population densities need to be taken into account, both with the rate of spread of the virus, and therefore the severity of the lock down rules required.

Well it would be good to figure out the source and see if we can't prevent this from happening again in 2 years. So we don't have to miss any games that season as well.

Perhaps international travel in/out of Santa Clara County, in particular to areas of China first hit by the virus, is greater then Mississippi as well (?).

I've noticed something that strikes me as odd. Looks at the daily numbers tested in SCC. They are trending down, not up over the past week+. Why would that be, especially in light of the fact that more and more testing capability is reportedly coming on-line?

I'll throw out a couple hypotheses.

    1) Testing capability isn't actually ramping up - maybe the restrictions in test kits is fixed, but other restrictive factors are also keeping it low, like the test processing capacity and/or number of trained people to execute it are now holding it back.

    2) Health professionals aren't viewing additional testing as necessary or valuable as us arm-chair quarterbacks do.

    3) Health professionals view keeping the testing criteria constant, rather than broadening the criteria is more helpful than skewing the data in the midst of the epidemic. If they go from testing only individuals with severe symptoms, to testing anybody that requests it, the 'number of cases' data becomes incomparable across time. And it's more helpful to maintain comparable data.

they disagree because the president who they follow like mindless lemmings told them to, remember? Mr nothing-to-see-here-folks, "we've got 15 cases and they're all getting better" just a great big nothing burger, as the disease spread from coast-to-coast. bottom line these idiot (R)'s are still costing lives needlessly because of their sheer stupidity.

Doubling down on your argument instead of thinking deeper, I see. All (R) are dumb, all (D) smart!

May work on some, but not very convincing to me.

Yeah, not knowing how much testing is being done and who exactly they are giving tests to kind of hampers are ability to make interpretations.

I don't know how many have been following the Kinza site that someone contributed a few days back (thanks!).

It looks to me like their methodology and tech is provides a leading indicator that is even more leading than number of cases reported. Of course their data is looking at flu-like temperature symptoms, and not COVID-19, but if COVID-19 would be dominating if those cases are swamping normal flu.

This one shows the hot spots that pretty much match up with the news reports of the hardest hit areas today.

    upload_2020-4-4_13-41-22.png

This one shows the weekly trend. If this holds, then we'll be hearing more about Kentucky and Maine and Chesapeake bay area as the 'next New York' soon.

Looking at this optimistically, it shows that most of the US is getting better, not worse.

look, nobody can blame trump for the pandemic, of course. but what we are all witnessing is a colossal failure of leadership. the president is completely unfit, unequipped and unprepared to lead at this time of our greatest peril. if that doesn't piss you off, you're not paying attention or can't (or won't) understand what's going on here, his inaction at the critical time and the lack of action by his (R) followers is going to cost their regions and the country dearly. it's no exaggeration, literally thousands are going to die needlessly because of the stupidity of these people. If it were the (D)'s leading this shit show I would call them out on it too, but it's not.
