mikael, thank you for clarifiying that. the whole thing was distressing to watch. the poor ref probably didnt even think about the head injury as he is giving the guy a caution. so glad there was instant treatment. which part of england are you from you should create a blog with all your clips, etc

Dutch league joins the Belgian in canceling the 2019-2020 season.

Since the title race is neck and neck, no champion crowned and promotion and relegation will occur.

I think current standings will decided who gets awarded European places for next season.

This, I suspect, is the first of many leagues to follow. Other leagues will probably follow very soon.

I think the Premier league will somehow find a way to finish the season even if it means playing in September or October as the legal battle of not finishing the season is almost not worth the cancelation.

  7. Remains to be seen.
AZ Alkmaar only in goal difference is behind Ajax, but head on the beat them at home and away without conceiding a goal. On topof that they also beat both Feyenoord and PSV away without conceiding a goal while they still have to play them at home.
AZ manager, former baseball star Robert Eenhoorn, is contemplating going to court. It means giving Ajax about 30 million at the disadvantage of AZ.

Probably figuring that VaR will help bail them out more than the refs on the field used to...

As the article notes, the French government decision has big implications for UEFA. If PSG can't play at home until September, then UEFA cannot finish the UCL in August per the plan that was allegedly developing. Even if UEFA tried to go to a neutral site event, I'm sure PSG would have logistical issues over training and prep that would likely lead to giant legal brouhaha.

I might be wrong, but as there were no Dutch or Belgian teams left in the Europa League, I think this is the first official act that clearly prevents one of the two UEFA competitions from being completed prior to what would be the planned start of 2020-2021 group stage European competition. Up until this point, you could see a way how 2019-2020 could be completed even as 2020-2021 qualifying started but now, the final stages of 2019-2020 would have to overlap significantly with the 2020-2021 proper competition. I genuinely don't see how it happens. Such an overlap is untenable.

Particularly since this is just the first such government decision. I know Italy is trying a phased re-opening, but the odds of Germany or Spain making a decision similar to France seems quite high. And, at that point, it's over. And all that is only considering government action and ignores the whole question of player contracts being up at the end of the summer.

I think that UEFA has a back-up plan for such cases. It is rumoured that they plan to host a final-4 or final-8 on the 2 venues of CL and EL. If this is true, then they will only be affected in Turkey or Poland take a similar decision as Dutch of French government.

  13. How are they going to do that with all the travel bans in place except for really necesary/essential travels?

Exactly. Travel is clearly an issue. But so is just prep and planning. If UEFA wants to finish UCL and UEL in August, but a bunch of teams legally can't even train domestically and technically aren't allowed to travel... yeah, it can't happen. PSG is going to go to Turkey for one match in August with no prep, perhaps illegally, and with several players out of contract (and therefore no liability insurance)?

I was a relative optimist at the beginning of this (even though I think many would have called me a pessimist, because I didn't think anything was finishing before late July). But it's becoming increasingly clear that a lot of this isn't going to be salvageable.

On an somewhat related note, as I'm sure some involved with PRO or MLS know, the issue of cross-border travel for the Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC (as well as non-US based players and referees generally) is a potential giant hiccup in trying to organize any sort of MLS competition this summer.

I think now it's just a waiting game between Germany, Italy and Spain as to who will cave in first and call off the season. Whoever blinks first and calls it off will mean that the other competitions will follow suit and the European season will essentially be done.

I'm actually relatively optimistic about the EPL restarting. I think they are just so determined to finish the season that they will.

I'm not so sure the other leagues will.

What's fascinating with this discussion about leagues restarting or starting is everyone talks about how there has to be ample tests for this to work. Which I agree with.

The issue is no one seems to be discussing is what happens when a player or member of the team contracts the virus?

All these leagues are assuming once they restart that no one will get the virus.

What do you do? Do you quarantine an entire team? Suspend the season for two weeks?

This is something that we all are going to have to live with as part of our lives for the foreseeable future.

  16. Vincenzo Spadafora, the Italian minister of Sport has said Serie A should follow the line of the Netherlands and France.
He said it becomes more and more unlikely the current season will be completed.

@MassRef makes an extremely valid point about contract expirations. If your current deal expires on June 30th, it would take some doing to get ME to play matches in August.

i know it’s not fiscally sound but cancelling is the simplest. Thay way Liverpool isn’t Champions of England. :whistling::whistling::whistling:

  18. In another thread, where a Liverpool fan posts too, I offered him my voodoo qualities when Liverpool became the winterbreak champions to lift the winterbreak curse haunting them. They were 3 times that, but 3 times failed to become champions.
For a selection of Irish quality whisky I offered my services. Liverpool at the break already were so far ahead that it was unimaginable to think they fail the 4th time.
He made fun of my offer:devilish:

Spanish first division resumes this Thursday, June 11, 2020, with the Seville derby (Sevilla vs. Real Betis, 4:00 PM Eastern). Mateu Lahoz will referee. La Liga has contracted with EA Sports for recorded crowd noise.

Back on specifically UEFA news, the most concrete and seemingly credible reports now indicate tournaments in Frankfurt and Lisbon to finish the QFs onward of the Europa League and Champions League, respectively. Aim is for August.

No idea how UEFA is going to deal with finishing the Round of 16 for either event (which, in the UEL, includes two ties that had both legs postponed). Decision looks like it would come early next week.

Logic says they have to finish the round of 16 for at least the ties that are only half way through at the respective home stadiums of the second leg. I can't imagine Barcelona or Man City just waiving the second leg home advantage they worked hard all season to obtain. Even if it is in an empty stadium.

But something tells me they won't. As we've seen all leagues from all sports across the world, there is no limit to how far they will go to bastardize and ruin the integrity of their competition just to finish it and get their money in.

Baseball is probably gonna play a 50 game season and invite pretty much every team into the playoffs and then somehow with a straight face say the season is legitimate.

MLS will have a glorified pre-season tournament count for regular season standings and award a CONCACAF Champions League place to the winner of this tournament.

The NBA will restart their season 5 months after it was halted and finish it in an empty gym in Orlando and then be adamant that their champion shouldn't have an asterisk next to it.

So UEFA just moving the second leg of a knockout tie that is only half way through into a neutral site location wouldn't be out of bounds at all.
