There will be costs. And mental health will definitely be under assault. I don't see this taking "years". The recovery might, but the actual social distancing will end once we start vaccinating people in numbers, combined with the ability to quickly and easily test for infection. One tip is to partially unplug. Read the news on a two day delay. Don't lose the forest for the trees.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/31/us/coronavirus-vaccine-timetable-concerns-experts-invs/index.html Well we can kiss the Olympics good bye next year. Most probably the election is getting canceled. What will happen to the food supply?
Still haven't seen any prices go down. Is everybody sitting on a government mint printing their own cash? Thx, Jay!
I have a feeling that there is going to be a significant "pause" at all levels. Between the loss of games and the recession, I expect no more expansion for 3-4 years and a drop in the recruitment of high-priced players. I watched the 2002 MLS cup yesterday and it was really striking how much better the quality is now. We're going to miss the high-priced players if they go.
This. And they'll have to. The 20th Amendment of the Constitution explicitly states: Section 3 and 4 then go on to say that if no President has been duly elected at that time the elected VP (if any) takes the office and absent that the House figures out the Presidency and the Senate the Vice-Presidency. In plain English, come January, the House, a third of the Senate, and the President and Vice-President are no longer in those roles. Also the Constitution and case law makes it fairly clear that the States control the elections for House and Senate, the federal government can't call them off or otherwise dictate their existence (or not). Its less clear on the actual Presidential election. The worst case scenario is, the federal government attempts to postpone or cancel the Presidential election, vote-by-mail states largely say "screw you" and still elect their Representatives and Senators, Jan 3rd those new Congressional Delegations are sat, and then the Presidency is thrown into disarray, with the House, almost certainly Democratic (since it currently is and the vote-by-mail states are largely bule States), names Nancy Pelosi President (or does something really interesting like naming Biden or Hillary), while the Senate, which may be blue or red at this point, drags it heels as much as possible. In short, if the federal government attempts to cancel/reschedule the Presidential election its going to make Bush v. Gore look like a Judge Judy case. Not even our current leadership is stupid enough to open that can of worms.
Back to soccer, one interesting suggestion I saw for dealing with the European seasons is to void them out, but to give teams a point bonus starting next season equal to their current lead, or their current lead for the full season calculated on PPG. Obviously that wouldn't work for a two game MLS season (Colorado, you start with maximum points, Nashville you start with 0) but it might be a compromise that works for the European leagues.
Why not just end the European seasons where they are at? The Premier League has completely 29 out of 38 games, Bundesliga has completed 25 out of 36, Serie A has completed 26 out of 38, etc, etc.
In the interesting news front, the reduction in human activity since the outbreak of covid-19 has resulted in a reduction in the background noise of seismic activity. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00965-x?utm_source=digg
I just saw on Twitter that Toronto has banned all public gatherings until June 30. AP story below... https://apnews.com/8eedd4114ad1c28ca7996d32389d543c That's an MLS city announcing it's basically closed for business until June.
Just about to post this. Basically no MLB, MLS, NBA, or NHL in Toronto until July. Unless they are allowed to be crowdless.
Why would the election get canceled? We vote by mail in Colorado. Sure counted would have to slow down as only one scanner could run in each room. But it seems like it could be done.
Not true. A haircut involves hair being, you know... cut. What we'll see is hair not being cut. You're welcome.
Without stepping too far into politics, there is a reason why certain states have no interest in going to mail-in ballots.
The states also control the elections of their presidential electors. (We don't actually vote for presidential candidates, we vote for electors.) Nothing the feds can do to stop states from electing electors and those electors casting their votes and sending their results to DC.
The consequences are huge to relegate teams without giving them a full season to avoid it. Bournemouth would be relegated by losing a 3-way tiebreaker by a margin of -1 GD when they expected to have nine more games to determine their fate.
But I think the federal government controls the actual meeting of the electoral college, which is why its kind of a grey area. unlike Representatives/Senators.
Practice facilities? Essential? Why do pro athletes and arena support facilities get to work but not Joe Golf Course mower? Thx, Jay!
Congress has set by law a uniform date that the electors meet and vote, but they meet in each state and send in their results. I don't know how any state can be told that its electors can't cast their votes and send in the results.
