Got off the phone with my parents and two of our family friends were tested positive. A couple in their mild 40s. The wife is feeling better after a few days with a mild fever, the husband's fever is going down slowly but he's making progress.
I would like to believe that both events are in fact not mutually exclusive. Meaning saving both lives short-term, and preventing horrific recession which in today`s global market would be extremely bad. That article suggest exactly this. But of course, massive limitation being lack of resources - specifically testing on everybody, which is crucial to implement such strategy.
I am reading the article and it says that authorities practically ignored situation and were saying everything is peachy... until it was to late. Ski resort. 500k people per winter. All you can eat buffet for Covid.
Opening stores as things are is practically as good as ignoring the situation. "hey, let's test and see who we can allow to spend money" isn't a particularly motivational message for customers especially with the amount of existential dread currently going on. People holding their pockets shut. Again I think there is no golden solution right now. If here was it would surely not come from a "I'm going to lose my savings!" standpoint
I would argue that they should just finish this season whenever that is. Compared to what we're dealing with now in life, finishing the season in October-November would be just fine IMO. Yeah, I know there is a transfer window between now and then but there are already 2 windows that overlap each season anyway. So f*ck it. Just play it to completion. Better than flushing the 2019-20 season down the bog.
I think that will definitely happen with the NBA. No one wants this season scrapped without playoffs and have 82 regular season games per team next season without a meaningful playoff game in between.
Yeah, its easier for American sports because their seasons are really only 2 months long essentially, and no promotion/relegation to make things even more complicated. [Accept NFL, which is all of 5 months]. But European leagues may want/need to consider a Scottish-type format for next season. i.e. play 19 rounds, split the league in half, then play 9 more rounds (v each team in your 'group'). That saves 10 rounds, which might be necessary to wrap-up before the Euros.
Grocery stores are open, with some changes. It would be interesting to see statistic about infection rates among let`s say grocery store personnel. Accurately determining low / high risk population and isolating high risk one sounds like a good idea to me. Albeit there is a major issue. Resources and time of course.
Over here grocery stores and postal offices have personnel sitting behind glass shields wearing masks and protective clothing. Hard to believe that I'll go to an Adidas store and pick up a jacket and the people working there will be walking up to me wearing a hazmat suit. It looks like nothing is going to happen before Easter though so it's really just speculation.
Might have to go to work with a hazmat suit ... given your teammates may go to restaurants and bars. Therein lies the problem.
These strict lockdowns are untenable in the long run. Even during the Spanish flu of 1918, most cities imposed them only for several weeks. The measures managed to lower the peak rates, but in the long run did not do too much to lower the number of excess deaths, since those regions that were quarantined during the first wave had a stronger second. The virus simply had to do its thing. Of course, out of precaution the world will give more time now to find solutions, but perhaps this thing is here to stay with us for a while and we'll have to live with it, just like in the past with many epidemics.
Visited post office today in my town. Gloves and no masks. Albeit it has mighty glass shield. But in general personnel has gloves and masks. While as for protective clothing, i have not seen one yet.
Neighbor's friends that I think I met at a dinner party over holiday season got coronavirus. Sad - hopefully they recover. Going to be one of those Walking Dead twists where we realize we all had it.

The sheer number of educated fools, adventurists that are still there makes it impossible to implement a strict lockdown. In India , people are still in the frame of mind that this is some kind of a vacation going on. Still having lots and lots of people meeting in groups to gossip, dozens of friends coming over for having a "good" time, people meeting en masse at mosques to offer prayers , to the extent the government had to take prehistoric steps of beating em up by police We are yet to face community transmission, once that happens, it is going to be really really terrible. People just don't understand simple maths to tackle this problem...they are still like " nothing will happen to me" - absolutely bonkers attitude. There's so much a government can do. Also, a severe problem in our country is that there is a huge huge chunk of people who work hand to mouth, these people decided to move back to their natives, which will lead to a surge in cases. It is really heartbreaking. Also severe under testing, huge number of people in asymptomatic phase plus idiots who are having symptoms and suppressing it out of fear - situation is looking bleak. Prayers for all in these testing times. Hope we survive this and come out better as a human race with less greed.
Sharing with you that the response of my country Pakistan has been very encouraging. The WHO had listed 6 countries only which took the best initial measures and Pakistan was among them. Our tally is around 1200 and only 9 deaths. Our country is also in a lockdown but grocery stores, pharmacies and hospitals are open. Plus we just helped Italy today by sending 500,000 chloroquine medicines which have helped in fighting the covid 19. We are doing all we can in this awful situation. But i am so happy that we have a great PM in these dire times. Stay safe everyone and be strong we will make it.

Considering that Pakistan’s numbers are prodigiously underreported, one can only imagine the actual gravity of the spread that might have been caused by the millions who came together for the latest Friday prayers. What makes the alarm bells even more ominous is that there still is no closure of mosques in the offing, with another Friday looming. I've not versed in the various aspects of Islam, but from what I gather Tableeghi Jamaat is an organizing body which, in this case, put together an event two weeks ago in which 250,000 people attended. Thus, those who were at that even are likely just now showing symptom severe enough to test, and based on the other gatherings mentioned, looks ominous. My additional question about Pakistan is more practical: what is the testing capability? I ask this as it varies widely around the world. (I did all this because, as I said, sources are important to prevent the spread of misleading or even false information and I was curious and hopeful.)
