It's a private group so I can't see the post. But holy shit, that's awful, assuming true. Per Sirk, Nov 2018:
Usually takes a couple of days for obits and the like for regular people. And, lets face it, an average old MLS player is more "average folks" than a celeb. I also say this because I got news that an old friend passed earlier in the week. But there's no obit yet.
David Winner just posted about it on Facebook this afternoon https://www.facebook.com/559317985/posts/10157373267802986/?d=n
I don't like the sound of " hope you are at peace". I'm probably wrong but to me that is sort of In the Arms of an Angel territory
I thought exact same thing. I believe he was a fireman or paramedic or something. but that type of wording doesn't make sound like line of duty type of thing. No matter the cause, it's sad. Too young! But I'm glad he was here at the alumni event and his former teammates got to spend time with him.
From The Athletic. Supposedly true. MLS, at least the old MLS, had more than its fair share of stoners. The league tests for marijuana, but there are ways around that, and there are stories about some of MLS’s more prolific weed-smokers warning each other in advance about impending drug tests, even today. That’s the methodical approach. Sometimes, spontaneity is the name of the game. One former Crew player remembers a time when he arrived early to training only to find out that the players would be tested after practice. A few of his teammates who regularly smoked hadn’t yet shown up, so he made his way out to the parking lot to head them off. Three of them arrived in the same SUV. All three had sunglasses on. All three looked a little lit up. The player told his teammates about the test. The driver, who hadn’t even turned off the car, immediately let out a loud “Nooooope,” spun the car around, steered over a concrete parking barrier and hightailed it to the nearest GNC. Whatever they bought there was apparently enough to get past the test, as they never did hear about the results.
I think we could all name one player that would fit the description. One particular Crew legend and former USMNT star.
Just for the record, the person hes referencing was not on the Crew "in the early days" and in any case, say what you will hes far too professional to show up to work baked. Plus, this is the guy who stopped by Starbucks every day for 12 shots in a cup before practice. He wasnt looking to get mellow
Because it's related... I was able to find my 2002 USOC Final, originally put onto video CD by Foosinho off the Fox Sports World broadcast. I emailed the files to Tony Galiffo. He's in the process of uploading it to YouTube. It's just a little something to get us through to the next game and out of the world situation.
