Looking at the death rate in the U.S from Covid19 is sobering. Just 2 weeks ago it was in the 50s now well over 1k.

As of now 1,107

NYC still getting the burnt of it but the South and midwest are now skyrocketing. Our enormity and vastness as a nation as well as federal state like system is going to make this thing much slower to get over. Seems like any day or week now we will be in the 500-700 range of daily deaths.

I don't trust CA's numbers... They have a very disjointed reporting system and it isn't clear that every case and death are being reported to the state.

Yea I'm waiting for a huge increases in cases but literally it's stagnation. That's not possible in a state of 40m people even with us shutting down earlier than the rest of the country. My wife who is a health professional says they have only 20-50 people they are testing daily and this is at a major research university hospital. The word is unless they have symptoms that makes them hospitalized they are told to go home self isolate and ride it out, those are state orders. So in CA they are definently fudging the facts. CA death totals have climbed from 12 to 68bin one week so there's that.

 

Yeah.. I saw on twitter yesterday that CA has 50,000 tests pending.. Absolutely unexcusable numbers given the quality of research labs that they have down in CA. Some of the first and quickest tests that the US have developed so far have come from CA labs..

 

Exactly - the millennials are the ones who were either all "Occupy XX" because my incredibly focused bachelors & masters degrees from top state or private universities won't get me a comfortable non-technical job with health care & 401K anymore so they didn't vote for Killary or voted Jill Stien or Maga to shake it up, or the poor dumb********s that volunteered to be stormtroopers for the 9/11 revenge tour and spent 9 tours in Kandahar only figure out that their spouses kept having kids that didn't like up with their time rotated back to the states and voted MAGA so they could literally bathe in the winning

 

Lol here you are with your both sides do it too huh. I think @Funkfoot or a poster earlier in this thread stated the mayor is a black woman and yea a democrat Mayor LaToya Cantrell. That the white residents of the city and surrounding suburbs hate her were pissed that she canceled the annual St.Paddys day parade. In defiance of her order they still went out on Bourbon street and got wasted and most likely spread Covid19. See what you have to know about New Orleans, Louisiana and Much of the South is that politics is heavily racialized. Whites in New Orleans hate this mayor so it was a big middle finger to her to go out and party. Of course Mardi Gras the previous month didn't help the situation either.

 

Modern college kids are emotionally fragile and socially inept on almost every level. I'll highly recommend The Coddling of the American Mind for a solid look at why.

As far as why they're there, a few items are at work:

1) Many were told spring break would be extended a week or two but still didn't go anywhere.
2) Depending on where they're from, and the student housing options, they might have a lease and some sort of job in town.
3) Many of them are just plain dumb and have no idea how to plan for anything other than prattling around college for a while.

 

About those tests many of those tests results are being sent out of state and the lag time on confirming positive tests can be 7 days! One place the state of CA sent those tests to be read was a lab in Salt Lake City Utah, which then had a 5.7 earthquake! You can't make this crap up. man...

As an European, I am very surprised to see that in USA you tag generations with such accuracy and with such an acute sense of estrangement from each other by such generations.

It could be that I am completely out of the loop, but I get the feeling that we haven't anything of the kind, here in Europe, at least nothing so strict. I don't even know which generation I am supposed to belong to, and frankly I don't care.
