I talked to you offline but wanted to get a few things off my chest to the board.

Yesterday our family was cooking and realized that after dropping an obscene amount of money on food (so we wouldn't have to leave the house for 10-14 days), we forgot soy sauce. After a longer than usual conversation, I decided that I would go and buy some. Right around the corner is an H Mart. H Marts are Asian grocery stores and a godsend if you are vegetarian or enjoy trying new foods. They will skimp on run of the mill produce but if you are adventurous or haven't had lychee/starfruit/tamarind/blood oranges and want to give it a go, I highly suggest meandering into one. Especially since fruits and vegs are cheaper, as they buy the produce that tastes the same but slightly irregular looking.

I braced myself as I walked in expecting empty shelves. It was the exact opposite. It had everything minus paper products. It wasn't picked over like Krogers, Costco, or Wal-Mart. Stocked shelves, great meat selection, you name it...minus TP and paper products. Also, I am sure I was 1 of 3 customers in the joint. And the only non-Asian in the place. It hit me that there is a huge backlash currently happening and will probably continue to happen against the Asian community.

This is incredibly fcuked up. And it is not going to go away anytime soon.

EDIT - (wasn't going to write this but...) My wife's work is also open and the owner is prioritizing work over the health of the workers. His business (landscaping) is operating as business as usual which had the missus in fits yesterday. The owner keeps sending crews out there. The owner is also strategizing on how to poach from companies that HAVE reduced or stopped going out. She is the office manager and accountant. This time of the year, 3 to 5 people walk in off the street to apply for a manual labor job. Monday they put a sign up that they are not taking applications because they are being inundated with people. People who she has no idea where they come from or if they are healthy or not ---the kicker is my wife has an autoimmune disease.

These people are mostly immigrants or first-gen labor who are hourly and can't afford insurance. So if they don't work, they don't eat. My guess is by the time one realizes they are sick, it is too late.

I could write a lot more but feel the need to stop as it is starting to piss me off.

Does oral intake of vitamin D work? My impression is that you have to make it yourself by being under the sun (i.e., UV). It is converted from cholesterol.

 

I go for the produce and we have a female Eclectus parrot who loves the tamarinds. This is now my go-to for anything. I also plan on ordering Chinese or pho take away to support the smaller businesses for Takeout Tuesday.

Not to mention "vaping" is a broad term, people now seem to assume it's all people using cartridges in portable devices for tobacco or cannabis, but there are people who've been doing it for years with more heavy duty vaporizers with straight cannabis buds, and that's a different thing entirely.

 

We went on a walk around our neighborhood around dinnertime the other night and it was shocking how much good food we smelled coming from houses, much more than ever before.

 

The outside of my house is currently being painted. At the beginning of last week, I considered rescheduling the project, but then I thought of the loss in income for the painting crew. At the end of my street is a creek, and across from that creek is a hospital. I've heard the ambulance sirens three times this afternoon. Normally, you'd only hear it 3 or 4 times a week. Each time I hear it, my heart goes into my throat. If it's only going to get worse, this may be the only sound I will hear because I'm not hearing traffic on the road up the street from me, and that's normally a very heavily traveled road. The anxiety is starting to build up, and I have no outlet right now with no sports going on. Half the day, I feel optimistic, even jovial. The other half I feel fear. I know fear heightens instincts, but I'm always concerned that I'm going to do everything right, and still get it, then give it to the people in the rest of the house. I can't stop reading about it. I can't stop reading the news. My wife told me that I need to find something else, and fast, before I break down emotionally, but I don't know what else to do. I don't watch TV, and I don't have time to watch full movies. Sports was all I had, and now it's on hiatus. I tried watching replays, but there's something missing, and I just can't get into it. I spent my whole life being in control, and now I have none and I have no idea what to do, and all I do is think of what seems to be coming, and I fear it can't be stopped.

Yep. My Vitamin D levels were super low during my 2019 physical. I've been taking 1000 IU every day since, and my levels were on the high side of normal for my 2020 physical.

 

That depends. I can make all kinds of breakfast food, sandwiches for lunch and can grill. But you would not want me anywhere near dinner.

I haven't posted anything here in years but I wanted to tell everyone how much I appreciate the conversations going on here. Here in Indiana the confirmed cases have been going up by 20% per day like clockwork. Today, the first day the official shelter-in-place order went into effect, it jumped 33%. Cases in my county went from 1 last week to 30 this morning. I think we missed the window of opportunity.

I used to travel for my job but that came to a screeching halt, much to my relief. Going through 2 major airports twice a week was heavy on my mind back in February. Luckily I am salaried and able to work from home so there's no financial hit.

The main stress right now is worrying about my daughter, who works in a grocery store and is getting crazy overtime at the moment. I'm after her every day about hand sanitizer, keeping distance, self-monitoring, and all of that stuff. Wish I could find a way to make her manager let her come to work in an environmental suit Oh, and I read what one poster here was doing and implemented it; every morning dad goes around the house and takes everyone's temperature. Thanks, whoever that was... even if it's already too late when the fever comes, it still brings some comfort when the temperature is normal.
