Received the call very early this morning that the site I was working at was going remote, so I'm working from home for the foreseeable future. As I was driving home from site yesterday, I saw a beautiful rainbow.

    20200324_082650_resized.jpg

It gave me a weird feeling of hope, like everything was going to be okay. Maybe it was blind optimism. Maybe I needed that after the week that was. Maybe it's just circumstance. I don't know. What I do know is that seeing it gave me the best feeling in two weeks.

Then... I came back to reality, so I took these photos because it made my drive feel like a dystopian movie.

Weird times, man. Just the weirdest of times.

Stay healthy all you beautiful people.

This is straight up Soviet Union shit, c. 1938. "Yes: for Comrade Stalin, I will confess my crimes and sentence myself to death."

The “good news” are that with no visitors from out of state, tourism can’t reopen. Basically a million people was laid off the moment airlines landed most planes and cruise lines docked their ships.

But reality is that probably we’re going to have a hard waking call next week or the following, when the full effect of spring break will be felt; last week and the previous our beaches were full of young people eager to share their germs.

We’re seeing a continuous rise in cases in south Florida and IMHO even local authorities have failed badly. Most measures have been too timid and too lax to really influence behavior, and when they finally adopt more stringent measures, it’s probably too late to have a significant effect on the rate of infection.

On a related note, just learned that two more people got sick at the building where I work. I have only been to the office one day in the last two weeks, but I’m supposed to be there Thursday and Friday. As I said before, I am not so concerned about my family or my personal health, being in good health, but for example, the guy who will be in the office with me is a sixty something fellow with diabetes and other preconditions; it’s puzzling how they still want the most vulnerable to man the building.

Sometimes I wonder, almost certainly unfairly, so I stop, how not one of those guys ever seems to get a powerful foot in the teeth. Do you think 5' of solid muscle international athlete couldnt kick Larry Nassars ass? Or, Gal Godot Larry Weinsteins? I know professional pressure but there are other employers and played right it would be reputation enhancing. Im sure there are well understood reasons. But none of these guys ever get a lamp over the head.

Thats Eugenics right there. Unproductive eaters theors bold and clear. These people must not let NAZI ideology creep in. It must go the other way. For profit health administration is tied to the tracks and the train is rounding the bend. Well not suffer to save it.

I’m beginning to wonder if the economic stimulus/aid package/rich people lottery, in whatever the final form, isn’t a colossal waste regardless of its final form. Like doing engine repairs on the Titanic post iceberg.

I just don’t see how the economy recovers from this...regardless of the life support we try now. If anything.....support industries we need to survive the aftermath (and obviously those that will get us through this). Anything else is a waste.

On average, about 100 people die daily from car accidents. It has taken the coronavirus some time to ramp up to that level, but it crossed the 100 mark for the first time on Saturday, at 116, and rose again to 140 yesterday. It looks as if we will be leaving those cars well behind before long.

The ratio of recovered cases to recorded deaths also varies widely among countries. China is 25:1, to be expected. Italy, on the other hand, is 1:9.

The U.S. is ... 1 to 150. Only 295 cases are listed as recovered.

To sum it all up, the President of the United States of America is not someone to be trusted. We are to put no more trust in his statements than someone peddling some fat burning pill or some evangelist peddling some miracle cure from their show. One could say we've been moving this way since Nixon but if you count him Reagan, Clinton and Bush none of them compares with the volume of lies that we get from the POTUS. The fallout of this will span decades.

I suspect a lot of the disparities we are seeing are due to social norms across societies as well. Examples: the prevalence of multigenerational households in countries like Italy and Spain. How socially isolated the elderly are in some societies vs others. Here in the US, our elderly are much more socially isolated. Much of that is due to suburbanization. They sit at home and only go out (in their cars) to get groceries, get a haircut, or go to the doctor.

There have been a lot of recent articles asking why younger people here are a greater proportion of total deaths than in other countries. People are grasping for explanations like vaping. The more common sense explanation IMO is that older Americans are more likely to naturally bunker.

I know you all don’t care for his primary coverage. I like his commentary here

“Temporary nationalization” is better than just giving these businesses money.
