That's normally what a golf discussion would do for me, too. But this nothing-to-watch shit's going to get boring, right quick...
What I miss are the chip and putt courses they have back where I grew up. Real golf, but on a smaller scale and not quite as expensive. For those who don't know, it's a par three course, where holes run from 30-100 yds (about) and you get a pitching wedge and a putter--you "tee off" without tees on a small patch of astroturf, to protect the course. Has sand traps and other hazards too. Played it a lot when I was in HS and college as there was a course close to my house. Even got Mrs KG to try it once while "back home".
We still have a par 3 in Findlay. Shady Grove. It has little shade and no grove but it’s a par 3. Foot golf has also taken hold on this course and it’s pretty fun. I play it with my kids sometimes.
Always wanted to try that... It's similar to what we had back East, but longer holes. Chip and putt is shorter and is run more like miniature golf (except real grass and sand etc.).
This is going to be the longest pregame thread in Crew BS history. It already feels like it with all the golf talk.
Those can be great fun. Doesn't require four hours and those of us who can't match the young Thundercats off the tees these days, can play even up without having to ask for strokes or ( the ultimate indignity) hit from the Senior tees. Anybody can hit it 70 yards.
Personally I have never had a hole-in-one but my father has, at Cumberland Trail, on a 135 yard par 3. He holds that over my head even now that he isn't healthy enough to play. If he gets really cocky about it I remind him it was with a 3 wood, to which he replies he was 70. I love golf!
Closest I ever came was a couple inches from the hole in Chip n Putt (on an over 100 yd hole) and chipping in for a birdie from well off the green on a real par 3. Must be nice to get one. My favorite golf memory (aside from that fall day up near Milwaukee, with all the leaves turning and Leinenkugels and brats at the turn) was the time I'd hit up right next to a light pole on the last hole of chip and putt--tied with my brother. Impossible to hit it right handed as it was right on the pole--even if I moved it out a few inches as allowed. Now, while I play my sports righthanded (due to my dad buying me a righty glove as a kid), I am actually left handed. So I turned around and sunk it left-handed for the win. My brother was none too happy.
I once played a scramble up on the SE side of town. We had our boss in from Pittsburgh, the sales rep and a customer, and me. It was one of those where everyone's ball had to be used once. These guys were all regular golfers. We found that our starting point was a par 3 where you got a car on a hole in one. I teed of first and got it within 4 feet of the hole. The other three were all off the green. We used my ball. That was the only time that day. These guys were hitting rockets 300 plus yards down the fairway but I only had to remind them that my first shot was 4 feet away from a hole in one AND a free car. As no one made the whole in one, I won closest to the hole and got a driver out of my efforts. My other great memory was when my older brother was learning how to play down in Tucson where he lives. He used to go every weekend with friends from work to get better and was down to breaking into the nineties. I was in town for a mini-vacation so he figured he'd take me along and not finish last. Well, I ended with my normal 130+ over 18 while he stunk up the place at over 140. He still finished last. It's the only time I've played him and the only time I ever will. He and his wife play 2-3 times a week and he's a solid upper 70 shooter now.
My closest was at Arcadia Bluffs, #10. It was playing 165 and I dented the cup with a 7 iron. I play in an annual golf weekend with a bunch of friends and all 12 were watching. Even if you don't like golf at all, you have to see this course in northern Michigan.
Wow... Music is quite appropriate today, for many reasons. Reminds me of the end of Wrath of Khan....
Yes, the Crew even have hosted a fan event with players and FO personal the last few years. There are a few places around the city that offer it.
What the hell is it with all of the golf talk? Anyway, will be about 39 with a chance of precipitation (maybe a rain/snow mix) about the time today's match would have kicked off. Can't say I'll miss yet another shit weather day experience at Mapfre. The club, the league, the sport, and sport, in general, yes. But the early season weather, not so much.
